Not really, it's to 2017 what emo was to like 2012, the scene burned out and anybody who knew said good and you still had people using it as an insult even tho most of the world has moved on talking about emo/hipster. Basically hipster is to the late 00s early 10s what emo was From the late 90s to the mid 00s.

That era of emo associated with bands like MCR died in 2007 when all those bands dedicided to either break up, change sound, or went on hiatus and came back to a different musical landscape and it died.

I guess hipsters started getting that everyone hated them or the sjw thing is what the hipsters turned in to. Plus everyone looks like a fucking hipster now anyway.

Its the same as now, where densley populated areas (where the majority of the population lies) are overhwelmingly liberal and small pockets of towns are all conservative.

On top of that our aging populaiton (who has historically been conservative) has been increasingly liberal as the 20 year olds from the 60s and 70s are becoming the 70-80 year olds today.

For a fashion trend to start you need to have abstract values that people can project themselves onto and defined styles. Social media amplifies the values of a person and styles get absorbed into the collective.

SJW is the exemplar of that because its entirely about values and has no real style except wear what you want to look cool in and fuck the rest.

Alt-Right showed how fast movements die in the social media paradigm. Here is something edgy and punk, could have grown into something interesting for nationalistic and angry people who are more intelligent and sensitive than skinheads to join with. Then Milo and Richard Spencer exploited it, CNN promoted it as a hate group and then it died in literally a few days.

the term hipster originally described a left-wing leaning millennial style thats style was pretty much what Australians call indie these days. as the term grew it was applied to more and more contemporary subcultures such a the lumbersexual in 2012 and now the 90s vintage trend. the original hipsters (ezra koeing indie-core) have nothing to do with what it has become. it lost a lot of its meaning once it became associated with whatever mainstream trend that teenagers started wearing, rather than the original single style it used to once describe. It causes so much confusion because unlike many subcultures that develop from a music scene and thus have a fixed style, the word hipster has covered everything from indie music to hip hop.

The term hipster dates from the 1950s and was used off and on since then. It was still used in the 90s: Elaine calls Kramer one in a Seinfeld episode. It originally referred pretty specifically to the culture of black jazz clubs and later came to be attached to the white people who went there and eventually moved on to being attached to pretty much everyone involved in the counter culture of the 1960s until it got overplayed. Eventually it came to be a label attached to anyone involved in some sort of counter culture. It just happened to make another resurgence only to be overused again. The usual cycle, we will probably see the term come into use again in couple decades.

Anon, there are some people in the mainstream who have been called "communists" so long that they self apply the label, and the media likes to muddy the waters a lot about what marx actually believed and what anarchy actually is. I would argue that with the way the modern internet works, there is not one dominant counterculture, but many small communities working to support their lifestyles or make political change. You could argue that /pol/ is a counterculture, or that hardcore evangelical christians like Michael and Debi Perl are. You could also argue that the polyamory community is counterculture, that students forming housing co-ops along socialist principles are counterculture, or that DD/lg lifestylers are counterculture, or that serious occultists like Michelle Belanger or Grant Morrison are counterculture.

Also, let's not get too into discussing the difference between marxism as discussed by marx and "cultural marxism" as discussed by the alt right on effay, okay?

Another thing that happens is you get people living in tiny towns in the middle of nowhere picking up a style and a type of music and an idea- in the old days they would have moved to be closer to other people with those ideas, or attended events. /cgl/ has been talking a lot about how most of the people who do style Youtubes are partially housebound or work from home or something. We already have the internet, and travelling or moving to a big city is more expensive to us than it was to our parents or grandparents, And someone might take a video of that person in the weird clothing tripping over something and put it up on social media or hassle you, so it's better to stay home.
