Could someone do me a favor and try to get a pic of a digital Casio's light function? Go to a dark room, turn on the light on the watch, and take a pic?

The only internet pics i can find prove the light is useless, but the illuminator function on other models is decent, but adds $5 to a super cheap watch.
>>
>>12139471
Get an illuminator then.

The other option is a dinky green light on the side. Which this >>12139113 model has.
>>
>>12139471
It works okay enough. It's nothing brilliant like Timex's Indiglo, but it illuminates the screen enough for you to read it.
>>
>>12139476
>>12139485
Yeh, I'm upset about Timex's build quality because it ticks loud and the second hand on the Waterbury I got stops in between each index. But that indiglo is phenomenal.

When you look at display of Casio with green bulb light, you see clear almost white background with crisp, almost black digits. Casio illuminator's display background is more gray (darker), digits also more gray (lighter). Illuminator looks way better in the dark though (still green bulb also works). It's up to what's more important for you, perfect visibility in darkness and less perfect in light or vise versa.

I guess it's true that a fool and his money are soon parted.

A couple hundred dollars is fine, but watches costing thousands of dollars are simply not worth thousands of dollars for what you get, no matter how many swiss men ejaculated over it.

Quartz movements are generally more idiot proof to manufacture, however to be certified as a chronograph (accurate time keeping to +/- 1 second per month i think) it must be a mechanical movement, its VERY rare to have a quartz movement be certified to that degree of accuracy.

However, to be certified as a chronograph and swiss made movement and all that is just cool to the people who know and care about that sort of thing.

People like the automatics, and complex movements simply for the craftsmanship that goes into them. Why get a manual gearbox on a car when a paddle shifter can shift gears faster than any human ever has. Why get any clock when your phone tells the time. Why do things the old way when something new and digital is here? Someone likes it.

Last time I checked they are indeed worth the thousands of dollars that are spent when I can resell for a comparable price. Fine jewelry is an asset and if one can afford a luxury item, who are you to tell them they any less for being able to do so?

If you can't afford an expensive watch and you're buying one anyway then you can insult that person for being a fool, but otherwise you're just being an edgy contrarian.

Also (reddit spacing)

>Fine jewelry is an asset

>Instantly loses 50% of it's value the first time it's worn.

I see where you're coming from, and think you're right. Which makes me think, is there any kind of 'guide' or 'index' (probably poor choice of words) for how much someone should spend on a watch without looking like they're over-reaching?

It's not like I'm a collector or have the money for a Rolex, and it's not like I'm surrounded by people who care about how expensive/reputable a watch is at the moment. If that changes maybe I'll go back to looking.
>>
>>12142355
/fa/ is not my board. You're missing the point though.

Looking for a cheap watch, how are old Soviet watches from eBay? I like their worn vintage aesthetic and figure that if I'm gonna wear a watch, I'd rather not care (or at least care less) about it getting scratched or damaged. Currently I'm really liking this one in the pic, about $15+$10 shipping and apparently recently serviced or maintained or whatever.

A lot of old Soviet watches on ebay are "franken-watches" made from a bunch of parts, and things like tight tolerances weren't part of the Soviet watchmaking vocabulary, so don't be surprised if your watch gives you a big "idi nahui" and is off by a couple minutes after you just wound it.

That being said, there are a lot of cool and interesting Soviet watches out there, so I say go for it if you want an interesting conversation piece; just don't expect it to be too accurate.

I'm a bigger fan of "less is more" in a watch, the Junghans is what I'd buy because the nomos has another dial on the face. Its just busier on the face and for that not for me.

Going off Amazon pricing, the Nomos with a sapphire crystal doesn't warrant 4x the price. A sapphire crystal shouldn't be any more than $100 premium on a watch.

I don't doubt you, but is there literature supporting this? I always kinda wondered why domed crystals aren't as common, I assumed it was due to fashion trends more than anything. I liked domed crystals.

The movement and finish on a Nomos is another planet to junghans. Maybe not worth it to you but they are not overpriced in the general market.

Ah, hard to tell in the Amazon photos, and I clearly don't know much about both brands.

The thing about watches, i'm finding, is the only thing the layperson is going to understand is the overall looks of the thing. Rolex is a known luxury brand, but if you show off your $2000 Nomos, the average person is going to think its a $200 watch. But if its cool to you, then price and others opinions shouldn't matter.

Its a pretty good looking watch, the only thing I don't like about most watches is the 24 hour indices on the face.

What's with people wearing dive watches to formal events?

And why do watches like the Rolex Submariner even exist? No one is ever going to put that thing within 100m of water.
>>
>>12143672
Most of them are assembled from a bag of parts by the sellers and configured in a way that wasn't originally available. I for one don't mind this because for me it embodies the soviet style of cobbling together something useful out of crap.

Expect 10 seconds fast or slow after 24 hours.

what does /fa/ think

i'm going to get a watch in a while and it's probably the last i'm going to get for a few years
i already have a 36 datejust that i love

now i want something big and sporty
so i'm debating between a hublot or an audemars piguet

the dilemma is audemars obviously has far superior finishing and movement but i would only be able to get the basic RO. $15-18k gets you a lot further on the hublot side of things. plus i just feel like hublot is the watch of our time and of our generation (frank ocean 'hublot' , jay-z in otis, pretty much any pro-sports player, bunch of friends have them). i don't wanna be anachronistic or anything like i'm still young.

Hublot is marketing: the watch

It was literally nothing until a big corporation revived it (LVMH), had a bunch of famous people sponsor it, and jack up prices into the fucking sky. The truth is, most models use the same basic ETA movements that are in far less expensive watches.

Why does "water resistant to 100m" mean anything fucking less than you can take the watch to a depth of 99m and it'll be fine?

Why the fuck has watch water resistances become some sort of code?
>>
>>12148922
The watch runs backward?
>>
>>12149108
Because the real resistance is the pressure.
People know that 100m water resistance = 10 bar pressure = 10 atm.
Tests are done in still/standing water.
So yes, you can put your 100m water resistance watch in 100m of standing water, but once you start moving it around you easily exceed the pressure that it's designed to withstand.
Google could have told you that.

Despite what Rolex salesmen tell you Rolex watches don't command all that much on the used market.

A $10,000 submariner is worth maybe $1500 cash to a pawn shop that can authenticate it who might prove it at $3500-4500 depending on condition.

Rolex watches on that low end spectrum are made of a softer stainless steel alloy so they tend to dull and wear In quicker.

Watches like run of the mill Omegas and Rolex are a lot like luxury cars in the way that you buy them for yourself or to impress others; not as an investment because as soon as that watch/car leaves the store/showroom, there goes your investment down the shitter.
It makes much more sense to spend that $10k in something like gold or platinum rather than a watch.
>>
>>12149499
It depends on the manufacturer mostly. Casio is pretty honest with that, any 50m watch you can go scuba diving with safely down to 60m, anything 100m and above is perfect for scuba diving. You probably won't go deeper than that, because if you did, you'd know enough about watches to know you probably shouldn't get one.

I suppose I meant new watches. I've not considered getting an old soviet watch, but that may be fun.
So, I'm looking for modern companies that make mechanical watches

What is the quality on the scuba dude?

I've heard some horror stories of 10 minutes slow in 24 hours out the box.
>>
>>12155491
overpriced and ugly
also
>diver sold with leather strap
>>
>>12155500
Keep it. White dials look better with two tone, and the small romans are a very nice and rare dial.

What a retarded comment
>>
>>12155037
I would get the 36mm version.

My dad gave me a watch but it's a little too fancy to wear everyday.

How memey is this watch? My wrists are kinda small, don't like wearing big watches so I think this would suit me perfectly.
>>
>>12156907
>Timex
>fancy
Do you sleep on the street or something?
How can you afford an interner conection if you wear only rags?
>>
>>12156928
My B should have clarified
my dad gave me a fancy watch, I want to get a Timex to wear everyday instead of wearing the fancy watch everyday
>>
>>12156941
Cop the Timex
What watch did your sugar daddy gave you?

Ultimately it's about the craftsmanship that goes in to a watch. Watches are a status symbol. Quartz watches are proletariat-core.
>>
>>12156944
kek I just checked the model number
It's a cheapy bulova. Oh well at least it's fancy to me. The only price I can find for it online is $78

bought mine in 2012 and wear it almost all the time. Its run into the side of boulders on my mTb, , walls, still goin strong. I heard these things can last 10yrs without a batter change. Expect them to be the only working watch come the apocolypse.

Following fashion trends the diameter got bigger over time.
So whereas small diameter watches can look very classy and can be of excellent taste, they are definitely out of fashion.
In this case the watch is definitely too small for your wrists, it looks actually more like a bracelet than an actual watch.

Because these are labradorite conditions that can be dublicated any time. Regard them as a standardised test like fuel consumption on cars for that matter.

That bait? That comment is wrong in so many ways, I'm even too tired correcting.
