I asked this question a few threads back, but didn't get a great answer.

How come there are two websites each for Seiko and Orient? For each, there's both "Seiko/Orient watches" and "Seiko/Orient watches USA". Each site doesn't have the same models as the other, and none of them have the $50-70 Seiko 5 that gets posted in every thread.

What's going on?

I asked a guy at a watch store, and he got defensive and just said that the Seiko's in his shop were authentic. Didn't help at all.

It's a pretty unknown old german brand. They also designed other stuff. But I like how it looks. Is it worth the 69 bucks?
>>
>>12108146
It's hard to value it without any history and that's usually one of the main selling points when it comes to vintage watches.
It probably isn't worth 69 euros and most likely won't have a resale value higher than that if you're planning to keep it and then sell it later.
But if you like it, then sure, go for it and at the price even if it's garbage you've not lost much anyway.

>>
>>12108153
Oh, easy answer - some watches are region specific. If you really want to see all of the watches, you'll need to look at the sites of other countries too. But yes, it is indeed annoying that there isn't just one site with everything.

For your Seiko, you can just buy it off Amazon or Jomashop, but I don't think this was your question anyway.
>>
>>12107972
Probably for localized products. I know seiko sell some watches in japan only.

No idea why though
>>
>>12108176
Because what people like in Japan may not be liked outside - a lot of things including games and watches get altered to satisfy the American market.
For watches it may just be the language of the datewheel, and for games it's things such as making the difficulty easier.
Some things such as the Seiko "Save The Sea" watches are currently SEA only but will come over in a few months: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-Wg0gVOHR4
>>
>>12108200
Well of course. I understand that side of it. But if you are selling them yourself on your own site I would assume they would be shipping from the same warehouses anyway. So why bother creating multiple sites in english or in this case one specifically for the US but not for EU which is fairly similar in demographics.
>>
>>12108219
It's worth noting that the websites https://www.seikowatches.com/
and http://www.orient-watch.com/ don't actually sell watches.

It's entirely possible that they have different teams working on the different countries, even though they do have the same warehouse and there's no reason to clutter a single site with multiple watches in languages that aren't for your demographic.

>So why bother creating multiple sites in english or in this case one specifically for the US but not for EU which is fairly similar in demographics.
Probably to deal with custom legal issues. The only problem is when some things are in one region and not yours.

Did you notice that it's 30mm diameter? Vintage watches of that size aren't really sought after because they are really small. Most popular vintage watches from 1950's onwards are usually the 34mm models, like Omegas etc.

Timex's have indiglo, tick LOUDLY, and will last pretty much forever. If you like the look they're not terrible. I'm not buying another because my second hand always stops between the markers on the face. I got a waterbury though, i can't imagine its any different movement though.

is this a good thing? I don't know shit about watches. Also I think the cloth/nylon or whatever band on the Weekender looks kind of stupid. Are there any others you recommend?
>>
>>12110467
No, ticking loudly is usually a bad thing, but not necessarily a deal breaker - up to you.
Also consider Timex Expedition.
You can easily swap out the strap for another one. Cheap straps can be had for less than ten dollars, nice straps for less than thirty, and very nice straps for a few hundred.

>>12110467
Some people find the ticking soothing, others find it annoying. Instead of leaving the watch on the nightstand, they have to leave it in another room while sleeping. Its just personal preference, I've had to leave mine in a closet at night because of how sensitive my hearing is.

>>12110555
Out of my price range but I like it. Why don't more companies make minimalistic watch faces?
>>
>>12110480
>few hundred bucks on a nato strap for a 30 dollar watch
very effay.

also, while the weekender is definitely loud, I don't think you need to leave it in another room. I keep my watches in a small Crown Royal bag and that deadens the sound enough that I don't hear it, and I live in a small room.

Any opinions on a Seiko SNK805? I've been looking at it as a possible step up from my sub-30-dollar collection.

I found this old watch, cleaning out a box of my father's old stuff that had been in storage. The battery was dead (quartz movement, all metal and brass), replaced it and it works fine.

Don't know much about it, other than Wenger is lower tier than Victornox, and it's a quartz "Swiss Made" watch. The SAK Design stands for Swiss Army Knife Design, which is now a term reserved exclusively on Victornox watches. It's probably not worth much, and it's on the small side, but it's a decent looking field watch, so it will make for a good beater.

Chinese movement. There are a hundred parts in a mechanical watch expected to be high quality and to work in sync perfectly to give you accurate and precise time. You really expect the Chinese to give care in manufacturing and assembling a mechanical watch?

Best case, you get a watch with incredible time loss a day (~40s/day). But, hey, it's cheap. If you want a knock off of a real mechanical watch, I guess it's not so bad.

>>12113223
>I wear to the gym (sweat), go in lakes when its warm, wear in shower, and like not having to worry about it
The lakes part needs a bit more explanation - are you diving?
For showers, no matter how water resistant the watch is, it should not be a warm/hot shower because the water resistance just gets defeated via the water gaskets expanding with the heat.
Here's a good guide to help you decide what sort of water resistance you want:
http://littlejewellers.co.uk/faq/waterresistance/
>>
>>12113238
no, definitely not diving. I just like to go hang at lake Washington in the summer.

Its been 6 months with my f-91w in the shower and its been 100% fine.
>>
>>12113246
>Its been 6 months with my f-91w in the shower and its been 100% fine.
Yep, it happens. My girlfriend had a swatch for a few years (she switched it out and it 100% works fine still) and showered with it too and there have been no problems.
What I said is simply what the manufacturers say regarding showers so if you end up with a watch filled with moisture or water from that, then you're 100% liable. With my more expensive watches I and most people are a little paranoid, so taking a watch off just to ease that for a bit doesn't hurt.
Not trying to force anything onto you, but just a warning.
>>
>>12113246
As a follow up, I'm just lookign for a cheap beater that isnt the F-91W, although I think that may be where I end up.

I'm not going to hop on the calculator train because I've got big hands and fingers and it will be utterly useless

>>12113262
Its a 10 buck watch, If it lasts a year or two I'll be happy.
>>
>>12113269
A cheap watch that you buy now will probably still work when you're dead after a battery replacement surprisingly.
Well, you said that you want something "slacker-y or goofy" but I'm not really sure what that means.
>>
>>12113278
Hmm how to explain. I thift a lot of my clothes, bike a decent amount, lift weights, and am a tall clumsy dude. 99% of the watches posted here would look out of place with my outfits and/or don't appeal to me

If you like the way it looks and it only costs $20, I say go for it. If it falls apart in a year or two, who cares? It was just $20.

I bought a chink watch that was way less complex looking, but it works and I like the way it looks, so I'm happy.

Yes I do actually think that. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and most of the other edgy Bauhaus """"""""artists"""""""" were 1930's lefty hipsters who produced degenerate art before, in one of their rare moments of clarity and prudence, closed down their school. Unfortunately a bunch of them moved to the United States and destroyed art their as well.

If you have a large watch collection then you may want to have some quartz watches since you don't need to manually set the time every time you pick up a watch. Personally I don't mind setting the time, but I know some people that absolutely hate it and either trim down their collection to make sure that every watch gets into their rotation before the power reserve runs out, or grab quartz versions when they're available.
Furthermore, quartz watches are: cheaper and easier to service with a much longer service interval, less susceptible to magnetic fields and less affected by gravity.
Depending on your lifestyle, you may want a quartz despite the fact that it's horologically more boring than an automatic.

Solid watches. Yours reminds me of the Seiko Cocktail Time.

Those watches has a lot of history behind them and personally I wish that I could be interested in them since the watches are really unique. Unfortunately I feel no connection with the history or the watches.

Right, but mine have more interesting case shape IMO. Seiko is pretty decent either though.

> Those watches has a lot of history behind them and personally I wish that I could be interested in them since the watches are really unique. Unfortunately I feel no connection with the history or the watches.
Well, for me not much magic in them. Those are watches owned by my grandparents, quite usual thing. Not of great quality, cases and glasses tended to wear off quickly. Those days with iron curtain fully raised, Orients an Seikos here were more trendy than Rolex etc. nowadays.

I have that exact watch with a black dial. I've taken it on more hikes than I can count, swims in the ocean, and even a few caves. Still works five years later. Though the buttons for the chronograph are starting to fail, I give it credit for how much its been through.

Gday guys, first time effay poster here. Its my birthday in a couple of weeks, and the missus wants to get me a watch because I've always had a fetish for chronographs like pic related. Just wondering what's a good brand and sexy looking watch for under 250AU? Pref. Silver with metal band, however I can always change a leather band to metal. Cheers boys!

I'm looking for a first time watch that I'd be wearing for mostly work. First and foremost Im looking for waterproof and something that can take a beating. I don't really care for watches that look like coasters or feel bulky so I'd like to stay away from metal bands although I am open to it. Analog or digital faces are fine. Any recommendations?

I just bought a Seiko [SKA371P2] Kinetic Diver watch two days ago and had to return it today. The watch must have been sitting on the store shelf for a few years with no winding action and the battery cell and/or capacitors were unable to hold a charge. I tired using an automatic winder overnight and then used my hand to manually "wind" the watch for 7+ hours in 2-hour increments and STILL couldn't get it to hold more than a day's charge (it's supposed to hold 6-months charge at max).

Anyone hear know anything about Kinetic Watches from Seiko? Was my experience typical and could you recommend a similar looking watch?

I really liked the idea of wearing this watch each day rather than one of my nicer watches. Unfortunately it wouldn't hold a charge and was skipping with the second hand (which is a built-in indicator that the watch won't hold a change). Damned if I was going to keep a NEW watch that required the Dive seals to be broken and refitted just to change out a battery that's supposed to never need changing.

Pic related (Photographed the watch when I brought it home)... It's a multiple exposure so I could get the luminous dials to show.

Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with Seiko Kinetics. Are they all shitty? I'm only now seeing less than stellar reviews from them.
>>
>>12120390
Why not just take it back to the shop?

I did return it. Today. I really liked it but apparently the model is listed as "discontinued". Retailers here in Australia don't have to refund unless there's a fault in the product. And this retailer did NOT want to refund the watch at first. My concern was that they would crack the dive-seals in order to replace the battery. There was also an indication that the Capacitors were failing (not sure why or how - but that's what I noticed). Wanted my new watch to have factory seals from Seiko rather than a shitty desktop pressure test by Klaus from Watch-Repairs-R-US. Do you think I should have let them try to order in a replacement?

I've never used a Kinetic Watch from Seiko before but there seems to be more than a little hate for them out there. I suspect my experience was not unique.

Here's a commercial shot of the same watch (this time not my pic - but it is the same as the watch I just returned).
>>
>>12120483
Ah, that's a pretty shit policy. I wouldn't say that Seiko Kinetics are unreliable and I honestly think that you just got a dud.
As reliable as Seiko is, dud watches happen with every brand from time to time.
Keep in mind that even if 0.00001% of the people that buy the Kinetic get duds, they'll be the loud minority.

The face is alright if you don't mind carbon fiber, that band is nice, and the crown is small. But the case is a little big for me, and I, for one, cannot stand fake screws on anything. So 10 screws that are there only for "looks" is pants on head retarded.
