not sure if that is still the case today but skagen used to be infamous for their shitty, easily breakable crystals a few years ago
>>
>>12085712
I've had one gifted to me about two years ago, the "hardened mineral crystal" is so far free nicks or cracks. I got a titanium model as a gift, and its one of my daily wear watches, so it's gotten banged around a lot. So far the case and crystal are scratch free, and it keeps excellent time. For a so called fragile fashion watch, so far it has proven to be anything but fragile.

Why would she even bother? I've never understood this... Spending such a trivial amount of money on something that's meant to be frivolous, like a watch. You should say thanks sweetie, that's very thoughtful of you, but how would you like it if I bought you a handbag from Nine West?

How long have you guys been together anon? If you've been together for a few years at least, then you should just be honest with her and tell her it doesn't really suit you. I've gotten to the point with my gf where I do that without thinking twice. She respects my sense of personal style and realizes that we don't always see eye-to-eye with what we think looks good.

If you've only been with her for a short period of time and you're worried about offending her by hating her horrible fucking gift, then your best bet is to just lie and tell her that it doesn't fit right on your wrist (the face obviously, since you can get the band adjusted) or say that it's really uncomfortable, likely due to its poor quality.

>>12087856
Besides it being the fucking quartz version good watch.
>>
>>12085254
Good question, Pebble alone got the concept right. It was a smart watch that enhanced the user experience of a smart phone instead of mirroring a small mobile phone on your wrist. I was always torn between wearing some nice timepieces and that one. If anyone knows a good replacement with similar technology and runtime I'd be happy to hear about it as well.
>>
>>12087877
Why is that a problem?
>>
>>12085680
They are China made but with a certain degree of quality control, as an example the crystal are placed neatly and the coating looks nice and seamless.
I gave away some timepieces to girlfriends over the years and my wife has one as well. The crystals are fine on those, but maybe it's a different story with bigger diameters on mens watches.

Last time I went running and had my vintage Seiko 5 on, I was sweating ofc and at the end I noticed its glass had a little steam inside. Soon it disappered though and I didn't have any problem with the watch working either.

>>12089862
It's a Danish fashion watch maker, that was bought by Fossil a few years back. The case is probably made in China, but the movement is a decent metal Miyota quartz movement from Japan, so it will keep excellent time. Early models had issues with crystal breakage, but newer models seem to have addressed that problem with hardened mineral crystals.

I have a titanium model, and have worn it as one of my daily wear watches for a couple of years, and the case and crystal still look like new!

Personally, there's nothing wrong with a quartz for me and some of the nicest watches I've seen are quartz.

Lorus is actually a Seiko bottom tier brand. It's basically a direct competitor to Timex. A tier above that is Seiko's Pulsar brand, which competes with other similar designer/fashion watch brands.

The one plus of Lorus over Timex, is that they don't have that loud ticking time bomb movement that is so common with the Timex brand.

Yep. Just spent like an hour watching comparison videos. Pretty keen on the blue Orient Ray 2, the Mako features the exttra date button. All of those are great divers, you can't go wrong with any of them. Enjoy and sorry - in 6 months time your diver collection will most likely be significantly larger (or at least in your head) and your wallet significantly lighter.

This so much - there's very little point in spending a lot on a watch for the sake of others or for the sake of compliments.
A watch is a personal thing and should be bought because YOU like it, no matter how tacky or cheesy others find it.

For the price you paid ($175) and the fact that it's essentially a fashion watch, it's honestly not that shit.
For the same price you could have bought a horologically superior watch blah blah, but if you chose that yourself and like it, then there's nothing wrong with it.
All in all, even horologically speaking within that price range of $175, it's really not that bad anon.
Wear it proud.

Most people either love them or hate them. I got it over a submariner because I already have a date just and found the sub to be a bit too ubiquitous for my taste, the pans are more interesting IMO. Unlike you, I won't let a watch, car or clothing (luxury or not) define me. I won't attempt to let it demonstrate my status in society.

How do I get over being too much of a pussy to spend a month's worth of pay on a watch? I don't have any other hobbies that cost money to maintain and I don't eat out so I have the money to burn, so to speak. There are many accessories that men and women wear at all times, but if there is one accessory that men are always going to find essential as part of their fashion identity, it has to be the wrist watch. It has always provided the perfect complementary item for a man’s look.

There are all kinds of watched out there, but the luxury watch has always been a great way to display your success and your status without having to mention it. This is one of the reasons why this has always been a very appealing purchase for those who enjoy the status it provides....http://www.fashionwaylab.com/5-interesting-topics-fashion-bloggers/

Not very much, under $100. Its gold plated steel, quartz, and an outdated square design. The new ones are selling on ebay for $200 with some diffrent features, new in box, and RW's have a bit of a price premium for whatever reason.

The 9983 appears to be the mechanism reference number, and not the model number of the watch. Was it a gift that you simply don't want, or a watch that he wore for years?

The problem with "collector's pieces" is they're only appealing (not sought after) to collectors.

Even the rares postage stamp is typically valued at 50 cents to the general consumer, only "collectors" are even remotely interested in it. I ask if it was worn by your grandfather to see if it had sentimental value; you will receive more in value from that than the 100-200 dollars you may or may not fetch from ebay.

Well the only things that come up are for places like Dhgate and Aliexpress so you got chink'd if you paid more than $25.
>>
>>12094636
It ain't a hobby if it doesn't take all of your money. I'm just a poor student and got speedy as well and in my opinion, that is a great watch to start with in the higher end spectrum.
>>
>>12099496
I wouldn't pay the price listed in the photo for that junk! I was just pointing out that even Fossil isn't tacky enough to design a watch that fugly!
>>
>>12099153

Or go to fucking Watchuseek.

But seriously, those are 70's low-mid range luxury quartz watches, the least desirable of all luxury watches. The guy got them from his Grandfather and their only real value is that they are heirlooms.

Kind of agree. Vintage Speedy > new swag shit, but Seamasters are still top tier, especially the PO.

>>
>>12099617
No.
>>
>>12099617
nope, no horological value to speak of. Buy a Timex and you're getting a better watch.

DW is a made in china "lifestyle" brand watch, if they are still around in 5 years I'll be shocked.
>>
>>12099717
Honestly I could see them getting bought out by Timex or Fossil. Maybe more so Fossil since they own Skagen and make a bunch of watches for various designer brands.
>>
>>12099717
If you can stand the loud ticking timebomb quartz movement of a Timex. Timex uses cheap brass cases that amplify the sound. At least the designer china made crap uses stainless steel cases, and are relatively quiet.

Not that I would want either. Save up and get something decent. At least save enough for a Seiko or Orient. An Orient Bambino is affordable and has the same simple dress watch design asthetic, and it's a better made watch for an entry level tier timepiece.

It would be nice if the watch experts could tell me why Squale and Steinhart are such "awful" brands?

Please?
>>
>>12100709
They get some sneers at certain members of the watch community as they are hommage watches that borrow heavily from rolex in terms of design.
I wear an Ocean One sometimes and think Steinhart could do a better job with the clasp and lume, but they are actually nice pieces with sapphire glass, reliable movements, good finish and even screwed in links.
Perfect for travelling as well, as the price point for the whole watch is even cheaper than a standard service.

Can anyone rec me a watch like this Seiko but smaller? In love with the design but it's bulky af and I've got tiny wrists.
>>
>>12101545
Bulky as in the case thickness or the diameter? Because the diameter is already pretty small at 40.5mm
>>
>>12101602
Mostly the thickness, but I watched someone handle it on youtube and it looked kind of disproportionately big. My current watch is actually about 43mm and looks acceptable so I guess I'm just not used to a white clockface that stands out so much? In retrospect I think it'd fit quite well.

Vote II for Bambino. Such a shame the v3 ones with new movement are so hard to find. Really dig the bauhaus design
>>
>>12101636
A lot of classy watches seem to be quite thick in pictures, but on the wrist they fit really well.
If you can already wear a 43mm then you probably won't have any problems.
Perhaps you could try out the watch at a local AD or try out some other watch of similar thickness and see how it feels?

I have found my timex watch to stay accurate to 3 seconds a month when checking against the atomic clock and the train station clock. Is this just a fluke and will this watch stay accurate over time?
>>
>>12101963
eww
>>
>>12101963
Nice watch.
It's a quartz so it'll have high accuracy and most likely stay that way unless you make really really bad movements with the arm wearing the watch, e.g. using a chainsaw.
It'd be a (bad) fluke if you managed to get a quartz with terrible accuracy.

The Timex Weekender is THE undisputed solid, cheap starter watch. This, speaking as someone who got one as his first watch, 3 months ago. I got the white face, red second hand, olive green strap. For your style, might recommend black face, red second hand, maybe black strap?

Also fuck the g-shocks, I hate them so much. Consider a Casio A168w-1, the stainless steel digital. Or if that doesn't quite hit you right, Timex Classic Digital, silver. I have one in gold, and I love it to death.

Pictured, from left to right: Weekender, Casio, Timex Digital
>>
>>12103455
That looks plain to me though and kind of hipster
>>
>>12103455
And I would definately want a black strap
>>
>>12103472

Well, one man's "plain" is another man's "understated". My personal taste, I don't like anything too flashy or over the top. Hence why I like simple 25 dollar watches. Not sure how to take the word "hipster" on /fa/ of all places. But it's a start.
>>

neither of us has used the word "normiecore" in earnest yet, so we're good. I think the Casio would be the best fit for you, from how you described your style, but I'm having a little bit of trouble picturing it. And it might be that I just really want that watch myself.

>>
>>12097948
Do you know of any similarly thin models you could recommend? I'm looking into this one, but I'm not sure where else to look for a thin analog watch. Doesn't help I'm a watch newb.
>>
>>12103544
Sorry bub, I only own 4 watches. I usually just go through amazon looking at watches. The thickness measurements are usually pretty accurate unless the reviews say otherwise.

However, the thinner the watch, the pricier it gets, or wider it gets. Buy the casio and love it. I'm going to buy another one because I've scratched the crystal.
>>
>>12101962
It's not fake. I own a A159 with Japan markings. You own a A158 with Chinese or Thailand marking or whatever Chink country it's from.
>>
>>12099717

Can you explain what makes a watch have "horological value"? What makes Fossils and DW and such "bad watches" and Timex "good watches"? Is it just the ability to lose/gain less time over the course of a given timespan? How do you know what's good and what's bad? How would an average person know? What would be the downsides of owning a "horologically bad" watch?

Teach me!
>>
>>12103590 here
also, aren't the vast majority of watches relatively accurate over reasonable amounts of time? I don't know much about watches but I thought this whole "cheap chinese quartz" thing was a big equalizer that made most even cheap watches fairly accurate.

Reminds me of an old joke.
The year is 1965, and three Soviet workers show up to the factory at which they work. By the end of the day, all three are disappeared to go count trees in Siberia.
The first man showed up early. He was sentenced on suspicion of being a spy.
The second man showed up late. He was sentenced on suspicion of being a poor proletariat.
The third man showed up on time. He was sentenced on suspicion of buying an American watch.
