I knew a girl in high school that brought an AE-1 to school, and when I said something along the lines of "hey that's a nice AE-1, I have an A1" she said it was her older sister's and she just brought it with as a fashion accessory because it looked vintage.

So yes, using film cameras as accessories are a real thing people do.
