Especially starting out, outsource. Computerized embroidery machines are expensive ($300 at the very least), hard to use, and not efficient at all. To compensate for the amount of time you'd put into each patch, you'd have to jack your prices up to a level most people probably wouldn't find worth it.

Also, unless you really luck out, don't expect to make much of a profit. Even the guys in the /k/ threads who devote huge portions of their day to this stuff don't make much money, if at all

That said, it's really fun and it's a good way to get to know a community and trade with people all over the world. I'm having a good time, at least
