Whats the best haircut to start with for growing out you hair?

Wouldnt a fade grow out wierd though? I was thinking just short sides and a longer top. Like a one on sides and then a 3 on top and growing from there

no a fade is when the sides fade from longer to shorter. I said short sides and long top. Meaning the whole side would be one length and the top would be another

the back should be trimmed right when growing out? Assuming starting from a buzzcut.

Yup, I know that if I don't trim the back of my head when growing out I end up with an almost mullet
