If you want a pair of black, formal, dress leather shoes, they should be oxfords.
If you want something more casual, like derbies, it shouldn't be black and very plain since that's not versatile at all, brown works with more things and some brogueing is cool.

I do agree with the Oxford comment. I find, for me and in my general area, derbies, tho HELLA cool in theory, will leave you either comically overdressed or comically underdressed. unless you regularly have chavvy get-togethers with your frat bros and eat sandwiches with way to much emphasis put on the W, or getting a costume together for a play, there's really no place for these in the real world. And desu I can really see oxfords becoming even more fashionable in the near future/recently. Though less flexible and older fashioned they look better fitted, less flat, and higher class.

Not true. Unless you plan on wearing them with black tie. 2/3 eyelet derbies are very versatile and can be worn with either a suit or blazer/odd jacket.

Also not everybody can wear brown. Especially if you have a cool complexion, brown would not suit you and would draw attention away from your face, which is the opposite of what you want your clothes to do.

It's about how the pieces of leather with the eyelets attach to the vamp.
ALL the shoes in this thread are open lacing Derbies, you can see that the leather with the eyelets rests 'on top' of the vamp and stays 'open' even when the laces are done.
Oxfords/Balmorals are closed lacing, the part of the shoe with the eyelets is sewn in the vamp at the bottom, and closes up surrounding the foot completely, search for some images if you need a visual aid, you'll see it's a pretty obvious difference.
