Fresh OC hot off the presses.

Spent the better half of the day getting this much unloved yellow polo to fit better. There isn't too much in the way of tailoring how-to's out there, so hopefully this can be of assistance.

In the meantime if anyone has any of their own DIY projects, post that shit.

I was tapering my own pants and making some shirts in a shitty way because It was the only way I knew, but I fucked up my sewing machine so now I can't do anything :/ i tried fixing it but instead lost some parts, tried looking online for parts but I can't find them. Anyways what sewing machine do you use?
>>
>>11578936
Bump
Also want a sewing machine, but one that can sew through denim with relative ease.
>>
>>11579223
Most of them do, you would just have to change the tension
>>
I'd appreciate some advice on buying a sewing machine
I want to do my own alterations
Not sure what to look for when buying a machine
>>
>>11578832
Did you play HoN?
>>
>>11578832
Thanks OP
>>
>>11578832
Hey I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. Not only is it rare for someone to talk about fashion on this board but to actually be doing things like this is pretty cool! Keep up the good work, its not going unnoticed or unappreciated!
>>
>>11579228
This.

If we keep making /DIY/ threads, something like this should go in a FAQ.
>>
>>11579305
well, the advice on how to buy a sewing machine would still be greatly appreciated lol
and yeah start working on a pastebin for OP material like the watch and fragrance guys have
>>
>>11578832
pretty good for a first job mate, although i would say it looks a little tight- see how the hem flares out a bit where it rests on your hips in the head-on pic?
also iron out your seams a bit better
>>
>>11579310
did you not follow the last thread
https://warosu.org/fa/thread/S11571389#p11572316
Also, I'm too busy figuring out how to scan in patterns and how to print it out.

get a cheap older one from a thrift store. Should be new enough have an electric motor (unless you have the space for an entire table and want to use your foot all day), but it shouldn't be too new to the point where it's all plastic, has hundreds of different stitch programs, comes with a touchscreen and similar ridiculous bullshit.

So maybe 1950-1980 sounds like a good solution. Like pic related for example.

Reason is, you can get them really cheap, and they're usually better than modern entry-level models. Of course nothing beats a modern high end industrial machine, but you don't have that kind of money.
>>
>>11579362
How about an overlock machine?
>>
>>11579362
Thanks man I'll check the local thrift stores tomorrow
>>
>>11579376
If you have the money and can get one for cheap in addition to the other machine, sure. But there's no need to get it at the beginning. You learn sewing with stuff you don't need an overlock/serger for. Square bags, small pouches, maybe your own pin cushion.

Also, maybe there's a local open sewing workshop that you can use for serging.
>>
>>11579387
There is a need for the beginning, but it depends on the thing you want to make. When you're making a tshirt or underwear (which are projects you can do as a beginner) you will need an overlock machine. I use it for edging and to sew 2 pieces of fabric together.
>>
>>11579400
You could always just use a zigzag stitch.
>(which are projects you can do as a beginner)
A serger/overlock machine is yet another investment right in the beginning, so the sole requirement of an overlock stitch rules out a project as a beginner project in my opinion.

On the topic of serging, I don't think you need a high end machine, some entry level is definitely enough, but for thicker fabrics you might want to remove the blade and cut manually beforehand.

Its just an old Singer that my family had. Probably the most basic thing to sew with.
Yea, definitely old. Looks like its a Singer 221K-7 Featherweight. Made in the 60's

>>11579223
The drive band was slipping on some of the parts with quadruple layers. I'm guessing that's a safety feature so you don't destroy your machine trying to sew through a button. I just had to lead it along with my hand. This thing probably couldn't handle denim.

>>11579228
>>11579310
Seeing as I've used a sewing machine, uh, twice now in my life I'm not going to weigh in on that one. But if a 55 year old machine can do minor stuff, then today's stuff should be good to go across the board.

>>11579233
Nigga wat?

>>11579286
>>11579292
No Problem babe.

>>11579407
The side stitches on the polo were sergered to begin with, I just reinforced it with another straight stitch. I think its mostly dependent on the fabric. The polo was a sort of jersey knit and didn't fray. My understanding is that serging is necessary to keep the fabric from unraveling to the stitch. Otherwise a folded stitch like a french stitch would be necessary.

You'll need to do a lot for this one as well. The platform, table (including the motor, pedal and foot lever), and spool holder are missing.
And is the lower thread housing even there?

Here's another image that shows a little how it's supposed to be threaded.
>>
>>11582829
Yeah I know but I couldn't pass up the offer
It was only like thirty bucks dude
I reached out to the company about getting replacement parts and I know that I can get a lot on alibaba and eBay as needed
There are a few Wilcox parts that are interchangeable so it shouldn't be a problem to fix
And I have a motor for it too
>>
>>11582851
Ah cool. That's great then.
