As much as I would recommend against actually living in Tokyo, it's an amazing experience. Kyoto and Osaka are better, though the fashion scene(s) are a bit less established/easy to find.

Hong Kong is next on my list, seems amazing.

Lots of South America is amazing if you like the sun and tropical feeling while feeling rich as fuck, but I don't think I'd particularly consider it /fa/.

östermalm and södermalm are both very effay. lots of nice stores, vintage slackercore/mods-inspired styles dominate in south side (by the people who know how to dress that is) while preppy, monochrome as well as more avant-garde fashion is more of an east side thing. check out aplace, nitty gritty, trés bien and maybe beyond retro (very memey but still okay)
>>
>>11515073
I live near Tokyo and I'm about to go to Osaka for the first time. Where are the /fa/ places?
>>
>>11515887
You should definitely check out Harajuku, Ginza, and Shibuya, and probably in that order (Shibuya is better at night). Harajuku has a lot of smaller and more interesting stores but is somewhat inundated with big brands at this point, Ginza is over-rich and kinda fascinating to that end, and Shibuya is its own sort of crazy cool animal.

Akihabara is also worth a visit if you're a turbonerd like me.

If you're a scumbag like me, Golden Gai is also awesome, go chill out with some of the drunk-as-fuck mobbed up bartenders. Ditto with Kabukicho.

Roppongi is probably not worth your time. Too many foreigners, too many losers, too many creepy sex clubs.
>>
>>11515936
roppongi is cool if you're loaded. I think the new west walk in roppongi hills is worth checking out by itself if you're in the Tokyo area... Undercover, Sophnet, Facetasm, N. Hoolywood.

seconding shibuya at night and in harajuku you have to go upstairs and into basements and stuff to find the best stores

ginza is cool. even if you don't want to buy anything, dover st market is a really cool retail space and it's right next to Barneys and not too far from hiroshi fujiwara's newest concept store, PAR KING Ginza (in the Sony building

and I'm pretty sure he was asking for /fa/ places in osaka, in which case:

- Dotonbori is so damn touristy it's not even funny, but not in the tacky chinese souvenirs way... you'll still enjoy it but just be conscious that most of the food/items there are pretty overpriced. Also worth checking out at night.

- Down one end of dotonbori (near a stadium of some sort, i believe) is orange st, which has supreme, bape, a few great 2nd hand stores, i think there's a carhartt somewhere around as well, and a pretty good coffee shop. That area is cool.

- around the orange st area there's tons of 2nd hand/reseller stores (similar to harajuku, really) where you'll find a few cool pieces for sure; prices aren't too bad either.

- Namba parks shopping centre (pic related) is also very /fa/, not the best stores IMO but looks really cool.

- I also enjoyed universal studios quite a bit to be honest. are theme parks /fa/? good rides and not that busy if you go in the week

Agreed. I just got back from Iceland last week. We spent 2 days in the capitol out of 8 days. That was more than enough. I LIVE in a city. I don't go on vacation to spend time doing the same shit I have to experience in everyday life.

We did a 4 day hike where we maybe saw 15 people every day. That was one of the most enlightening experiences I have had in my entire life. If you're going to a place like Iceland and spending the entire time browsing boutiques in Reykjavik you're doing it entirely wrong.

a quote from my reading today:

>The country morning exists; the city morning promises. The former makes one live; the latter makes one think. And I'm doomed always to feel, like the world's great damned men, that it's better to think than to live.

as a city lover myself, this quote reflects a lot of what i feel w/r/t country v city. i love the outdoors and country for what it has, but will always be at home in the city and would not desire a foreign countryside before even the worst foreign city. but travel where you want my man! if the countryside is your jam, do it!

To actually answer the question not like an asshole, just explore Osaka blindly. I wouldn't consider it an ~/fa/~ sort of place, but that's part of the appeal. Go fuck around and drink near the rivers, people in Osaka are chill and 300x more fun than those in Tokyo. Most of the good times I had in that area weren't shopping or whatever, but generally involved bad beer, bad street food, and good people.

Also, while in the area, get legit-ass Okonomiyaki. "Legit" means "fuckin filled with meat and noodles." Trust me, it's an orgasmic sort of food.

Well, assuming you're in England, and wanted to go for 2 weeks in July, a return with no stops would cost like £700, a half decent airbnb in Shibuya would cost around £600 for 2 weeks, then I guess you'd need £500 for everything else.

Living quality sucks. The work culture is extremely oppressive to the point of silliness, even more so than the legal culture here (which is really saying something). Depending on what you do, you'll likely end up being a white potted plant. The food is great but it is extremely difficult to eat healthy, and it's even harder to find good lifting gyms. Foreigners aren't exactly treated well, particularly in terms of healthcare - when I got sick, I had difficulty even getting a doc to see me, and he outright refused to Rx some goddamn flu medicine. You'll always have difficulties phoning home or talking with friends back home, the $$$ conversion rate sucks, and you'll always be futzing around with paper forms in Japanese that are difficult to translate. In terms of dating, most Japanese girls are boring and just want white dick, which is fun until you realize they are unequivocally bad at sex.

It's like living in NYC but worse. The appeal of Japan is great, albeit only for a short period of time. I'd definitely recommend living there, albeit limited to a few months.

>>11517727
Rough back-of-the-envelope calculations, assuming you're in the US:
- $1,500-ish for a flight (sometimes can get cheaper)
- $1,100+ for a hotel (don't do capsule hotels, consider Airbnb, it's more fun)
- $1,000 for food (go cheap, but also prepare to blow cash at nicer places)
- $300 for transport (might wanna budget more, depending on the likelihood you'll get stranded out when the trains stop and need to use a taxi)

= ~$3,900

You should also be realistic about budgeting for incidentals. Japan is an extremely consumerist economy, so most of the non-tourist-trap places cost money to enjoy. You'll also, of course, be super tempted to buy a lot.

As to the hospital situation, our experiences may simply have varied.

As for the Skype and Facebook thing, it's not a tech issue, it's a timing issue. It can be incredibly limiting to be 12 hours off from the US, both from a business and a social standpoint. At the time, I had a number of business interests going on in the US, and arranging that shit was a nightmare.

Is law in Japan and the US similar enough that lawyers in the US can move to Japan or were you working for a US company in Japan or something? Are lawyers specifically trained in law from their area of the world, or do all lawyers pretty much do the same stuff?

So if you get a law degree in California, you are only allowed to practice in that state, right? Honestly I don't even really understand what lawyers do - do you literally memorize a bunch of laws and then make arguments how those fit into cases? Surely it's not just memorizing laws right?

is being a lawyer cool
>>
>>11520293
you have to sit the bar exam for each state you want to practice law in

yes, reading case law is like 85% of what lawyers do. criminal defense is such a small part of the overall profession
>>
>>11520293
>>11520320 is correct.

The law is similar and different, but many companies have a need for people who know US law. Lawyers tend to specialize in very different fields. It tends to get pretty specific - hell, I know a lot of people who exclusively specialize in liquefied natural gas law.

With few exceptions, you have to pass a bar exam in each jurisdiction you practice in, be it a state or a country. Most higher-end lawyers do very little argumentation, just a shit ton of paperwork in every possible way. Reading and writing is about 95% of what we do. Lots of lawyers never end up in a courtroom except on special occasions. I tend to do a lot of weird shit in my pro bono matters, but pretty boring shit in my billable matters.

Being a lawyer is not cool, don't do it.

Man if refugees are taking your jobs then you're probably doing a low level job anyway. get some unique skills and you'll always have work, nerd

If you're a white guy in sweden who can't find work it's definitely your fault. What about the second-generation or half-immigrants who have lived here their entire lives and are still treated as second-class citizens by others? How so?

My girlfriend is from Afghanistan, has lived here for 8 years and has never been subjected to any racism or been treated badly. I have a really hard time believing that foreigners are treated badly on a regular basis in Sweden.

I remember being subjected to racism in Sweden, by Swedes, in the 90's. That was a long time ago. The racism that I've been subjected to since then has only been from immigrants, because I'm white. I've been robbed, I've been jumped and so has several of my friends as well. We all have in common that we grew up in very poor areas with lots of immigrants (Jordbro, Brandbergen etc.).

Anyway, OP, don't come to Sweden. There's basically nothing here, Stockholm just likes to pretend it's some big shot city like Tokyo or whatever.

Did I ever said I didn't have a job?
No. I am employed and have an appartment, it's a known problem that there's a lack of jobs.
People just comming out of school can't always get the best jobs, since they don't have any work experience whatsoever.

I'm not worried about any immigrant taking my job, I have a degree and I doubt any of the illiterate 'refugees' coming over are a threat to me.

They are, however, making the housing shortage (which has been a big crisis for several years now) much, much worse. The shortest waiting time for an apartment in Stockholm was (as of July last year) 9,7 years - and that'll get you a flat in an area with 80-90% muslim immigrants.

The immigrants/refugees that come here get to go first in that line, because the municipalities here are obligated to find them a place to live, meaning that Swedish people who've lived here their whole lives have to watch as every single person coming here gets to skip ahead of them in the line, while at the same time the price to buy an apartment has gone up A LOT these past years because of the housing shortage.

This. Not to mention that they're bringing their culture here.
To them, hitting children is perfectly fine, while here it's been illegal for quite a while
They think women have no value whatsoever, and much less animals, something we also have worked against for quite a while

To be clear, I don't mean every single person is like this, but in their culture it's much more accepted and normal

Hong Kong native here. It's all right in the winters, pretty nice actually. Summers here are pretty bad though, got to around 38 degrees this summer.

Stuff is getting pretty expensive though, and with the quality being worse than if not the same as Japan, you'll begin to miss life over in Tokyo. You should definitely visit though.

Another blonde and pale Finn here, I've never experienced anything like that visiting Sweden so far.
It has been totally fine for me, sure there have been several people of color but your text sounds very force fantasy-ish.

It's not my country, I'm just living here temporarily.

I do welcome an economic crash though, or having the housing bubble burst. Already got my game plan set up, just waiting to put it into motion now.

I love giant Chinese cites, especially Hong Kong and Shenzhen. I'm getting into cyberpunk and these cities fit that genre. Ghost In The Shell city was actually based off of Hong Kong, in the animations even though it is a fictional Japanese city. You can wear techwear, Rick, Yohji and not feel out of place.

Food is relatively cheap, transportation is cheap, and things are open late, you can walk around with beer on the street. People are pretty chill, there aren't as many rules as Japan and people won't be afraid of you. Japan is a great place too, but girls would get shy when I tried to talk to them, In China people are excited to talk to you.

Also there are minimal Muslims, and the Chinese don't tolerate terrorism like they do in Europe.

I am going to be in Berlin for a month starting this Saturday and might do a weekend trip to Hamburg. I'd probably go for the food, the Kunsthalle and to just hang out near the Hafen and think about what it was like when it was a major Hanse trading port. I think it might be a nicer trip in the winter so I might just wait until I'm in Germany again.

I like reading and writing a lot though, what should I do instead?

I feel like the law and how it shapes our societies is interesting, but I'm just starting undergraduate philosophy this year. I was planning to be a lawyer, should I look into something else?

I'm interested in visiting and maybe moving to China
How are they towards foreigners there? I know Japan is really hard to live in, hard to find good work and shit, so China would be second best
I've never heard anything bad, but then it's probably not as popular as Japan
>>
>>11527672

I think any Asian country will treat you like an outsider if you don't look asian. From East Asians to the south, no matter where you go. Japan is dope but there is a reason why the percentage of foreigners is so low there, the government simply don't want many gaijins. To answer your question about China, I think there are much better Asian places to move to. I visited for a month and really liked South Korea but I'm pretty biased because fashion is a big thing there.

t. half Indonesian that's white and was treated differently when I was living there

I have a mate who worked for a year in China and absolutely loved it. Chinese are more open than Japanese in a way, and the cost of living is super low if you are on expat salary. My mate also found it not too bad learning Mandarin, so long as you can get the tones down.

>>11527737
I've also heard good things about S. Korea, and not just from one year ESL teachers.
