If your going freeform just let your hair grow and never touch it and it should eventually turn to dreads. if your gonna have them twisted into dreads you should start with your hair at a decent length before getting it twisted. maybe grow it out for a year first but it depends on how fast your hair grows

I've been pretty lax/lazy lately but this is what I usually do about once a week. If i plan on going out during the week then i usually go through the whole routine again like the night before so my hair is "fresher"/less tangled.

-completely drench hair in the shower
-detangle with fingers
-add a bit of conditioner to help with detangling
-rinse hair
-put conditioner all throughout
-get out of shower
-section hair then either braid or put in bantu knots. doing this helps my hair be less frizzy when it dries compared to air-drying.
-let dry

throughout the rest of the week i put my hair into 3 bantu knots at night(takes about 3 minutes) or a bun and wear a du rag to sleep. then in the morning i take my hair out and put a little coconut oil in my hair then just style it a bit and wear it out.

I just started using this cheap cocoa butter lotion from Walmart in my hair. It surprisingly works well in my hair and makes it soft and defined. Also its only like 3 bucks for a huge tube of it. the brand is queen helene. shea moisture curl and style milk is good too

You'll have to try different products though and see what works well in your hair as what works for me might not work for you. I use coconut oil but you can also use olive oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, Jamaican black castor oil, etc.
