It depends how fast your hair grows, and your hair type.
That looks about five to six inches on top and three or four on the sides.

As for products: Pomade.
Pomade, pomade, pomade.

for a style like that, which is looser, you'd need a medium hold.

Either water based or oil based. Water based will come out with one wash (obviously), where as oilbased allows for build-up.

This is all really only touching the tip of the ice berg, but I can add more if you'd like.

So, I also have curly hair, really coarse.

If you want a look similar to the picture the other guy posted then yeah go with a medium hold. It'll hold down your hair but still allow for some texture and the natural form of your hair to come through. (waves etc.)

If you prefer more of a slickback or a pomp then use a Heavy hold, like myself, it changes the nature of your hair and, for myself, actually straightens my hair out.

Again water based pomades will, or should, wash out with one wash. Oil based on the other hand allow for buildup and will take multiple washes to get out.
