There's a lot to like about Manhattan, but I feel like it's something of a rat's nest slowly approaching irrelevancy. I hate the lack of proper trash management, the nasty buildings, etc. Not to be a hipster about it, but I think it might be a great place if fewer people lived there and the city was given a bit of time to repair/breathe.

To be honest, most people are more into things that just numb them to their slave-ther existence. Look at all the ads for distractions in NYC and you'll find it's true even there. At least surfing is very in-the-moment and raw, and I grew up hunting and doing other stuff outdoors that put me into touch with things New Yorkers appear to not believe are real. The truth is that in a city there is little to do besides labor and consume, and NYC is so expensive that it's priced out culture workers like artists who need less labor in their lives.

Country and suburban living is way worse as far as leeching your money unless you're radically self-sufficient. You need a car, and to spend potentially productive or enjoyable time driving it all over the damn place, which is basically all lost time since you aren't even getting exercise. Then you have to maintain a bunch of property you're responsible for but that doesn't add any value to your life, which means lawn mowers and landscaping and all that shit, which is not cheap. Then there's the usually subpar schools, cultural and employment opportunities, and extra expenses and time if you want to travel long-distance.

Meanwhile, I spend a flat $60 a month on local transportation, can buy a variety of groceries that would blow flyovers minds, pay literally nothing to go to the nearest major airport, and date in a pool of college aged girls in the tens of thousands while paying scarcely any more rent than I would at home in the rural south because I live with my good friends. Only thing I miss are muh guns.
