A suit. No gimmicks (three-pieces, bowties, etc). Aside from that don't try too hard and don't spend too much money; you're never gonna see 95% of the people there past the next few months. Most of you are going to be dressed terribly anyway.

If you're gonna buy a suit instead of renting one, be absolutely sure you know how it's supposed to fit or you'll just be wasting money.

prom is the only time that having a tie to match date's dress is not a faux pas - but I'd try to get something tasteful like a striped tie with a secondary colour that picks up on the dress colours
