It's shit because of the people that adopt the style, not because of the style itself.

Rockabilly is just some good old fashioned Americana. Problem is, the people who lean hard into it nowadays invariably seem to be those fat ugly types out in Nevada or California. What was at one point a rather interesting mixture of American themes and styles ended up shoved into a sort of "cover my shame with bright colors and tattoos!" style that's obnoxious. It doesn't help that they've taken literally every variable in rockabilly and cranked it up, meaning that what would otherwise be a cool vintage outfit turns into an obnoxious mash of design elements.

In contrast, take, for example, Elvis. The clothing is fucking obnoxious, but in a sort of intentional, hilariously ballsy way. Feels American. It helps that he's not fat (in this context, anyway).

Probably because the scene is 80% mexicans now. They grew up with parents who loved the music of the 50s, since late the 40s - early 60s is when chicanos first broke into the American music scene, often through rockabilly and related genres.
They grow up enjoying that music, but later feel the need to rebel, establish themselves as "individuals", etc, so they gravitate toward psychobilly (rockabilly + punk), which is a lot more popular today.

That's why you see everyone taking the style to the extreme like Pat observed >>11064335, they bring in the goofiest elements of punk style (colored hair, bad tattoos, chains, spikes, etc) and add it to the classic rockabilly look to create an ugly bastard abomination. And the scene is small enough that most people can't distinguish rockabilly from psychobilly if they see one of these creatures on the street.
