The difference between you and me is that not only are you poor, you're not afraid to show it. Some of us may be poor, but we look wealthy anyway and that gives us preferential treatment in 99% of locations and social contexts. Walking in to a shop with a fine blazer makes people kiss your feet and restaurants aren't afraid to give you over-the-top service if you look wealthy. I think you'd be thrown out the moment you walk into a gentlemen's club with your Common Projects sneakers and 5,000 dollar t-shirts despite the fancy price-tags.

I can confirm that girls, especially classy girls, are all over men with a conservative yet fashionable style.

what does /fa/ think of Burberry?

>>
>>11043592
Damn man, now I gotta wait for the summer to get new stock of shaggy dogs. Oh well, its 70f outside so it's not like I'm gonna get a chance to wear it anyway.
>>
>>11043777
Burberry's too much of an explicit "global luxury" brand to be prep now. Basically it's too popular with Chinese exchange students and poor people.
>>
>>11044167
Even if the brand isn't explicitly prep, would that jacket work well with a preppy fit?
>>
>>11044196
It's a pretty siqq jacket
>>
>>11044196
Based on the pics, no. The fit looks too persnickety/feminine and the fabric looks too shiny.

Rule of thumb for prep, jackets should look like something you can do some outdoor sport in like hunting, riding or yachting. That looks like a jacket you wear to some gay French gloryhole.

Military officers are at best middle class, so their stuff isn't really preppy. Not how basically no prep pieces are particularly military inspired.

Prep is upper middle class to upper class WASP with a sense of casual playfulness. The military is like the opposite of that. Military men are poor people from flyover states.
>>
>>11044047

The most basic-bitch garment on earth that is still best worn with a far more material shoulder and different buttons than any nations's navy has ever used? Yeah, it's a color that refers to a branch of a military. Good job.
>>
>>11046894
couple misconceptions you've got there, i'll address some.

officers are undoubtedly upper-middle to upper class once you pass O-4 or 5. At that point you are making six figures of completely disposable income, since your housing is paid for by the military. if you're talking about NCO's, yeah, they're almost universally blue-collar and make blue-collar salaries even at the highest paygrades. but then again, it's all disposable so that throws the figures off a little.

and it's not actually mostly people from flyover states. in my experience, people from major urban centers (myself included) were demographically proportional.

also, you don't think military-style parkas are preppy? i think most are.
>>
>>11047159
Class isn't just about money. A military officer is an organization man. He lives by someone else's rules, goes where he is told, stands no chance of becoming actually wealthy, and is very unlikely to have an Ivy League education (the academies are a joke academically).

Upper middle class has an excellent education and makes very solid money at something where he has a strong degree of autonomy. This is doctors, bankers and good lawyers.

I respect them, but they're middle class.

Military style parkas maybe, but stuff like this anorak in the OP pic is undoubtedly more preppy. Not that it matters when it's actually parks weather.
>>
>>11047159
>>11047218
I think the heart of the matter is that prep is playful and carefree to some extent. It flaunts it's casualness and archaism. Military officers I know tend to like the new and shiny and be more uptight than they even realize.
>>
>>11047218
i don't mean to draw this out into an argument, but i think you might be surprised. i knew some pretty well-educated, urbane officers during my time in the army, one of whom came from an ivy league background. this is at the company-level though, and i have no way to verify if these are the kinds of people who actually stay in the military for the long haul. to the contrary, most of the field-grade officers were as blue-collar in their demeanor as their NCO's. whether or not this is a facade shown to the men, i couldn't tell you.

for what it's worth, i think you are more or less on the money for the majority, i'm just a stickler for generalization when it comes to the military -- probably because i'm pretty demographically significant myself.
>>
>>11047159
>>11047218
He was O-5 and an Ivy League dropout if it makes any difference
>>
>>11047305
personally i would hang it up instead of wearing it, he just gave you a piece of history.

but that's just me.
>>
>>11047279
Any discussion of class turns into generalization. Someone who graduates Annapolis, does a tour as a SEAL officer or pilot and then goes to Harvard Business School is going to be upper middle class most likely, and George Bush and JFK didn't lose their upper class credentials by serving.

I'm just personally used to cretinous military wives trying to make their husbands jobs sound like they're super successful in a way that's obviously insecure and defensive.

you have literally no clue of what you are talking about, the military itself sets you up for a lavish lifestyle specially if you are an officer not only cuz all the money you make is pretty much disposable income but also because of the power you have. sure you have people above you but I will assure you that you will RARELY meet people in their early 20s that are in charge of anyone but a handful of people. Lieutenants are usually in charge of a flight and a flight usually consist about a dozen or two people, on top of that you get saluted and people kinda cater to you.

source: SrA in the USAF.

even being in the lower enlisted ranks I am better off than most people I meet in my age group. sometimes it feels like I am cheating at life

Do you know what preppy even means?
>>
>>11060080
Preppy is not the style of rich people. It's the style of American WASPs. Preppy is directly inspired by British country dress. After the Terror/Napoleon wiped out the aristocracy of yurop the British became very worried about ostentatious displays of wealth. They're wealthy began dressing in a very muted way to avoid proletariat revolt. This why your rich WASP neighbor drives a civic or Volvo wagon from the 90s. Your rich Italian/polak/mutt neighbor drives a black X5 of some bullshit logo car. But you probably live in a poor neighborhood anyways.

So no, a fake monarch from the continent is not Preppy. Simply by definition

No, I get that, but Hermes polos are still just polos, and logo-free ones at that. If you like them, which I do, you can wear it all day every day and nobody will know how much it costs unless you tell them.

Wearing an Hermes belt, on the other hand, is emphatically not preppy... except I know a guy who went to an elite New England prep school who wears one with otherwise preppy outfits and seems to pull it off. It's all about not giving a fuck.

that's what i mean. a red/white sweater with a bigass number on top of a white shirt with the collars popping out simply wouldn't fly nowadays. people say fashion is cyclic but in reality it gets adapted, repeating an old dead style 1:1 is something that doesn't work.

but imo you pulled it off as well as it possibly could, so congrats on that.
>>
>>11061652
Okay sweet thanks man, I'm a little paranoid and unsure about how I should wear it; it's a radical change from my usual style that I got a little bored of. Hence why I'm asking for feedback.

But yeah I totally agree with what you said, I was trying to modernise it a little with the pinroll but I wasn't really sure how well I pulled it off.

I really am overthinking this though

it's alright, colors are a bit mismatched so the sweater should be navy and white instead of red and white

and tuck your shirt in, replace it with an oxford shirt

>>11061614
These threads are so heavy on inspo because it's guys trying to ape a style that they know looks good but requires being plugged into a certain culture to pull off well.

I see guys walking around Harvard (I don't go there but went to a different excellent private university in New England and live in Cambridge) who look like they just walked out of those 80s photos with only a couple of minor tweaks, and they still look fantastic.

Middle-class and lower kids trying to dress prep is where it falls apart and gets laughable.

>>
>>11063224
>no one actually finds being rich with no other notable merits of any particular value

You haven't heard of these creatures called women?
Do you have the slightest idea how shallow 80-90% of women are, and how easily they are willing to sell themselves to the highest bidder if the bidder is wealthy enough?

What you are saying is the female equivalent of "no one actually finds being beautiful with no other notable merits of any particular value" and insisting it applies to men. Most men in the world couldn't care less about the 'merits' of a beautiful woman, and most women couldn't care less if a rich guy is fat and ugly.

So the entire reason for bringing any of that up is relevant to your interests, good. Sorry if I gave off a snotty tone or something, but when you're talking about prep style there are well-recognized specific places where that comes from. I'm just speaking honstly from what I've observed in a couple of those places.

This is a fashion board and we're talking about clothes, not whether I'm personally rich or talented or interesting with regards to anything besides these styles I've taken note of.

The kind who have never worked a day in their life and think the money their parents bestowed upon them gives them the inherent virtues of a demi-god. All the people on my cricket team are like this and I'm so fucking sick of it. Not one person gives a shit about how much money you have, which meme college you attend or what street your parents live in. The only reason these people are on the team is their money and I'm forced to fucking captain them. Pull your head out of your ass you're embarrassing yourselves.

Fuck every single one of you vapid worthless shits
>>
>>11063379
>All the people on my cricket team
hard to take you serious after this, senpai. people born into money have confidence, it's the biggest thing successful people impart unto their children, because it's the single most important factor in success in life. you can be the most talented person in the world, but with no confidence you will go nowhere.

these people won't pay you any attention because they were raised not to, and it's what's going to make them successful in life, even if they're completely mediocre at everything else. this is how life works.
>>
>>11063379
You mad?

Like >>11063399 said, those guys are demonstrating sky-high confidence, which is both a trait of upper-income children and an extremely important factor in future success. If you're such hot shit, then adopt their attitude and steamroll them at their own game, but this resentful anger will lead you absolutely nowhere until you're a bitter has-been who knew he could have been somebody if it hadn't been for those darn rich kids.
>>
>>11063399
Say what you want about cricket but its the best sport ever.

And the thing is these people aren't successful though, they fail their classes and only get to stay in because their daddy has a word with the chancellor or the team coach. They spend their time playing golf and generally lounging around in their menageries trying to cling to their ill-deserved superiority.

And you really think I got into this uni without having confidence? I went through prep school like all the others, I've personally watched these people being dragged through life by their parents and lecturers who only do so because they're desperate for the donations their families give
>>
>>11063435

Brands like Visvim, Neighborhood (>>11061588), WTaps, Beams. I'm sure there are lots more as well.

Some other brands they commonly wear in that style are Carhartt WIP, Ebbets Field Flannels, DIckies etc.

I ordered one blue oxford shirt a year ago. It was very well made and exact to measurement. As long as you figure out your measurement, your result will be satisfactory. I even told them to cut with one fewer button on the front and they did it right.
>>
>>11064423
Not really. The Americana you described from those brands are mostly workwear. Stuffs like denim, handmade boots, duck pants, dungarees, etc. I don't think they care about prep much anymore.
>>
>>11064536
yo cuz if andover has a good rep I'd go get it done in store then when you get the pants (provided you like the fit) send em to luxire to copy. I've done this in Australia with pjohnson and luxire, granted only for non chinos (rtw is aight for me).

Polo should fit more closely and not be tucked in. You want it to fit the way a sports uniform would.

Izod-Lacoste, when Izod distributed Lacoste in the US, was basically the #1 prep brand. Since Lacoste left, they've gone a lot downmarket and are now a lot lower in quality than Lacoste. If you find something from them that you like and is good quality, there's no reason not to get it. They're not really considered prep at all anymore, but some of their clothing is fairly preppy.

Totally wrong, the British aristos started dressing understated because of Brummell's ideas about clean lines and restraint being masculine, which caught on big because they fit with most people's instincts about masculinity. Also why a trad Brit man doesn't wear a watch or wedding ring.
