well, I don't think he goes out of his way to hang out with rappers. It's just that they were at one of his shows or some shit like that and they like his clothes. What's wrong with Stan smiths though, they're nice, basic shoes and Raf didn't even design them.

1995-2008 was when Raf was good. Modern Raf is trash.
>>
>>10978443
>regurgitating shit that '15 /fa/ made up and hiveminded

While I agree raf has fallen off, there are still shit collections from 95-08

Plus raf fell off around 06-07, but he's still had some good collections, namely '14
>>
>>10978443
Also can you even explain why 95-08 raf is "good"??? Why he's "trash" now??
You can't. It's alright to have opinions, but don't post or even state them in person if you can't back them up

95-07 is great. Early raf was youth and punk orientated, and produced many great pieces that continue to influence fashion today. Back in the day Raf was WAY ahead of his time. Look at his '97 sweatshirts the cut is modern despite being 19 years old. Today we have rafdidas and his RTW and Runway stuff is just crap, because he's been busy at Dior. That said ss 16 Isolated Heroes is cool.

>>10978478
It's also worth mentioning that Raf's tailoring was truly exceptional back in the day. With skinny and slim cuts that were far from the norm. It would take forever to explain the individual strengths of certain Raf collections in his prime, but make no mistake OG Raf is far superior to what he's been making recently. Although, I agree the Sterling Ruby stuff was cool, but that comes back to the fact that Raf was inspired to do the collection by his love for the artist. Modern Raf is bad because he didnt care and focused on Dior.

>>
>>10978478
Which is exactly why I think we shouldn't be so quick to judge Rafs recent work just yet, we gotta wait and see how it holds up
>>
I'm not getting the Rafdidas hate

I understand and agree with Stan smiths getting flack, but the response, ozweegos, terrex are all pretty nice even though Ian Connor and a bunch of niggers ruined them.

Raf basically made ugly running shoes... Look nice. He made something that should be conventionally ugly into a work of art
>>
>>10978495
ahh NAHK lookin cute :3
>>
>>10978496
It won't hold up. His heart hasn't been it, and fans can feel it. That said I think he's coming back. I'm a fan of S/S 16, and that's most likely because he's left Dior to refocus on the label.
>>
>>10978505
Niggers have ruined raf in general

I also have 3 other pieces of evidence that Raf acknowledges his decline, and his yearning for a comeback. First is his A/W 15 Collection which had quotes like "To the Archives" and "Archives; No Longer Relevant." Note that this is around the time Raf would be contemplating his departure from Dior. 2nd piece of evidence is his '16 runway inspo. He released a list of the influences on the show, containing 2002 Virginia Creeper (one of Raf's most celebrated collections.) 3rd piece of Evidence is the new 16ss RTW his first collection leaving Dior, featuring most prominently his 2002 work Isolated Heroes.

this desu

every good designer has occasional slumps and with reports of burnout and the crazy world of heading a haute couture house in a world of fast fashion PLUS gaining the attention of the streetwear world it was inevitable that his mainline would suffer

all the most recent trends signal an upswing, I agree. And Sterling Ruby was his best collection in 10 years, no doubt

I'm excited to see how he plays on the 70's maximalist stuff popularised by Gucci. God knows that with his 70's and 80's music influence we could have a few peak years ahead
>>
>>10978748
Also people spouting that recent Raf is so different and has lost his essence have no fucking idea what they are talking about. You may not like the most recent collections but he's picked up right where he left off before he changed his vision post-2006.
>>
>>10978748
It also has a detachable bit. If you look closer at the pic you can see it. Without it your legs are revealed. Attached it looks more like a regular coat. I think it makes it quite unique.

>>
>>10978826
Sorry this isn't very well written I'm just airing my thoughts.

Jil Sander happened really, as he was appointed as head designer of the label around the same time.

Most of Raf's earlier collections were highly conceptual and ambitious, mostly based around the idea of youth culture and his obsession with both the past and the future. Radioactivity, Black Palms and Closer all called to youth music culture; Disorder, Incubation, Isolation and a collection like Confusion was radicalising the idea and shape of black tailoring for young and skinny men. Riot Riot Riot and Woe Onto Those... were tense and aggressive collections based on youth rebellion and completely throwing any idea of conventional high fashion out the window with the extreme layering and proportions of the garments. May the circle and waves really explored the idea of tribes and youth circles with a real spirituality to the movement and shapes of the clothes. Both the History of... collections were an absolute radical melding of past and future tailoring, silhouette and styling with Icarus Surgit and A/W06 completely tapping into Raf ideas of the future.

Raf was less of a brand and more of a world, and people I think don't give enough attention to how dramatic Raf could get. This is a man who based an entire collection on boys in capes. Virginia Creeper was set in the woods and had the models in looks ranging from behemoth axe murderer to Halloween dress up. Radioactivity looked like it was ripped right out of The Matrix. Woe Unto Those evoked terrorism more than anything else with a stark uniform of head wrapped boys in white red yellow and black. Consumed was almost gangster in its approach. Etc, etc, etc. His ability to construct oversized and skinny garments onto his boys resulted in really radical silhouettes and pushed a lot of his work into some really experimental territory.

And I mean, above all truly those trousers were fucking amazing. Raf owned the wide trouser and those pants always made such a statement in the looks that they were paired in. Needles to say Raf stopped doing wide trousers for a very very long time past 2006.

The Jil Sander influence really came in the streamlining of Raf's identity in his collections, in both his silhouettes and his conceptual ideas. He stopped designing for young dreamers and started designing for an older gentleman with money to spend. This only got worse as time went on with a complete what the fuck moment happening in ss09 with the Raf man becoming a metrosexual prada enthused douchebag turning then on in following collections to a straight up businessman with a fetish for neoprene and snakes.

ss07 to ss06 is superficially similar but one is clearly far more radical and challenging than the other. Fw07 and fw08's material, patternwork and silhouettes are straight up kind of gross, with tacky leathers and metallics and zero dynamics to the shapes of any of the men. SS08 was actually pretty sick (techno backpackers, felt innovative in a classic Raf fashoin, obviously still a large departure for what raf usually does), fw10 had interesting cutting but didn't really boil down to anything else and could have easily been any other label, ss11 had cool trousers but was still far too clean and generic, fw11 was gross, ss12 was straight up vomit inducing, fw12 had a cool rendition of the uniform of the schoolboy with a great colour palette and them (in)famous sweaters, okay I could literally go on about this for hours. Raf ended up in a weird art pop phase for a few seasons as well and ended up toying with androgynous ideas (which have always been present in his work) that J.W anderson ended up doing better anyway.

This leads us to sterling ruby x raf which is in all honestly everything that Raf should have been doing this entire time, and was a perfect blend between the ideals of Raf art pop/artist collab phase and the radical silhouettes and punk ideas of old Raf's garments. The next season was more understates but I personally loved the Japanese influence and the peaceful serenity that the collection captured, spiritual in a way that Waves was back in the day.

After SS/15 though Raf suddenly tore everything down and went through a rebirth of sorts. F/W15 was essentially an old Raf collection spouting new ideas, like he just picked up where he left off from Waves or History of... with traces of Riot and his mid 90s stuff. SS16 was essentially a darker, cultish take on the optimism and rock and roll of fw15 and that takes us to fw16 which unfortunately isn't that exciting and is literally riffing off virginia creeper without any of the sinister elements that made that collection interesting alongside vetements tier designs. Still, I love what he's doing recently for the most part. Not to mention what he was doing at dior was sick.

Anyway, Raf Simons is an art project, not really just a label, and Raf is truly Raf when that’s what he is doing. It’s conceptual and takes you places, and it’s not always accessible. It’s certainly not Prada or Jil which is what it felt like at times.
