hmm, i guess i haven't really thought about it. i suppose that playing the melodies you hear was not hard, but fine tuning the reverb, delay, and synth components can be challenging at times. i think the hardest part of making drone/ambient is developing your synths and whatnot to get the sounds you want. (i dont use presets or anything like that) i wish i had money so i could get some better equipment and recording stuff but oh well. in the end, i'd say it is definitely not the hardest music to make but i think it takes more talent than people tend to give it credit for!

Pro tools, ableton and Logic Pro are great programs to make music on. Though takes a while to learn. I suggest you take up an instrument if you've got time, helps you become more creative.
