straws actually protect your teeth from acid and sugar from sodas provided you use them properly, so if you are worried about dental health and using mixers in your drinks, then use one. Also consider that most other people are drunk and thinking about the social connotations of straw drinking probably isn't their first priority.

It's fine for stuff that's meant to be savoured such as cocktails and that, but for a double vodka coke or whatever, lose the straw.
