where do you get your ties from? how much does the material matter (the tie will go above a shirt, so i won't really feel it)?
the cheapest i see ties for are $15-$25 at most retail stores (even higher at luxury stores).
was thinking of buying cheap ties online, regular ties made from polyester or silk, and cotton knit ties, for $3-$5 each. which is a significant discount than what i'd pay normally. worth it?

Its fucking 3-5 dollars buy one and see for yourself what the fuck is there to lose

3-5 dollars

I'll give you 5 dollars
but you should just spend 85 dollars on a past season Brioni tie and wear that one until you die
cuz that's all you need, really

Honestly the brand of the tie doesn't matter much, just buy generic silk ties and you're good. The width and pattern matters a lot more than the brand.
Ross/Marshalls. They're usually ten or twelve bucks and have some fashionable ones like Calvin Klein, Ben Sherman, etc. Don't buy online cus you can't tell the width or color or texture usually.

I generally get my ties from thrift stores and vintage stores and spend anywhere from $0.25 to $15. I prefer less structured ties (untipped if possible) of silk, wool, or cotton. Big chunky heavy ties are far more strangulating than a nice unlined/thinly lined tie. Ranked important to unimportant:
1) how the tie's fabric looks
2) how the tie knots
3) how the tie drapes
4) how the tie is constructed
5) how the tie feels on your fingers
These are the main things that you should be worried about after "does this width and length actually work for me".
why wolud you ever want to wear a tie?????
OP here, bought a few from some chinese retailers. should arrive within 30-60 days
