Richard Linklater the director is one of the best dialogue driven writers out there, plus I like to think Ethan Hawk has an affinity with Texas/houston/austin cause he shot Reality Bites in Houston in the 90s'

I haven't watched it yet but the whole "we filmed a kid growing up so it's automatically a masterpiece" seems gimmicky to me, like they are trying to compensate for lack of content or good acting, but I could be wrong.

My favorite film is The Tree of Life, how does it hold up compared to that?

It doesn't give you the same type of spiritual high as a Malick joint does, but it feels like an interesting spin-off from the Before films if you've seen those. Same type of style, but maybe slightly less vibrant (although that could just be because it's not as fun watching a boring dude grow up compared to Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy)
