I like Chelsea boots for casual a lot. I wear a pair of rm Williams on most days, paired with denim it's pretty perfect.

plain sneakers, and honestly, menswear stuff
I really like the look of high quality leather in a classic shape
chelseas, some monk straps, derbies, oxfords, and other styles of boot
I dislike brogues pretty strongly but that's personal preference
shoes/boots that look more oriented for work/hiking, too, have their place in rougher winters. But the desert boot aesthetic is something very, very specific, designed for one use, and associated very strongly with one look.

When I see someone wearing desert boots outside of military uniform, the first thing that comes to mind is "this fucker is trying to look like shia labeouf". That isn't a good thing
