Lang never ever ever said anything about them being "bondage". Please find somewhere he referenced the carrying straps as bondage. You see so many errors and points lost in translation being put forth as fact from fashion publications, and even more so with non - fashion oriented news companies like The Atlantic.

Not the most familiar with Helmut but I do recall reading about Helmut fanatics elsewhere saying that he was inspired by aerial / flight gear, and that the bondage label was given afterwards by observers. That probably was lost somewhere via word of mouth, and came to be interpreted as some by "He was inspired by bondage gear".
