might be obvious but don't leave it in bleach for too long if you dip it, otherwise it will tear very easily.

desu I dont like the wallet. Looks like some trinket some homeless would do in their "free" time to store their pennies imo. sorry op.

Its okay if you dont like it, I can wear it still and Ill prove it once its dry. This is humanistic art
>>
>>10703420
Most of it is function (I hate back-pocket wallets) so the shape and size all comes down to fitting with the pocket. I would challenge you to make a wallet, just so I can see how you would go about it. Things you make for yourself are priceless compared to storebaught. Just sayin
>>
>>10703442
got a little defensive there. no I'd never make a wallet and I don't have to in order to have an opinion on them.
agreed on the last part.

distressedsweater.jpg
442KB, 1054x1500px
Anyone know how to do this? Obviously it requires the right kind of material. Next post will the sweater I intend to use.
>>
>>10703543
Holy shit thats gonna ne a tough undertaking, have done similar with jeans by cutting them lightly so you only cut one direction of the threads in the fabric. idk how youd test it here though.
>>
>>10703543

that's not really "distressing"

when the sweater is knit/purled, they just intentionally drop stitches in a calculated fashion DURING the construction process. it's more akin to making an arm-hole or neck-opening than it is to distressing. like, that wasn't made by creating a complete sweater and then distressing the holes into it, the "distressed" parts are part of the original design.

>>10703543
Just got a close up so you guys could see the material.

>>10703555
I remember seeing a video a LONG ass time ago of some lady demonstrating how to do it but I can't find it now. I faintly remember her just cutting (for lack of a better term) a "vertical" thread and just pulling it. I'm probably remembering wrong though.

>>10703563
Oh, so it's not really possible? I'm not trying to get that EXACT effect. Just trying to make it look like something from The Matrix or some shit. I mean, the sweater I'm gonna use was only like $20 so I might as well try, right?
>>
>>10703579

i mean sure you can try.

but if it's a true knit, it's basically all one thread. so it's like that weezer song, if you get one thread loose it can eventually unravel your whole sweater.

if it's a weave, then idk. i don't do any weaving so i don't know how that works, but I imagine it would be more resistant to getting ruined since there are multiple threads.
>>
>>10703401
That actually looks pretty good and i hated the original slp shirt, yours is more subtle. if you were to do it again id keep it lower. Only other thing would be to touch up the bottom so there no brown under where it starts to fade.
>>
>>10703287
also fucking love these, considering buying a pair just for this
>>
>>10703621
It seems that since it was an old jacket some parts of it turned darker from bleaching. not sure if its just stains that became more obvious, or if it does just needs a touchup, depending on how it looks later Ill probably leave it, I really do like the ragadness it implies
>>
>>10703599
It's from fucking Forever 21 so I'm not worried about ruining it. It appears to be a real knit though, as far as I can tell (which isn't saying much). I just need someone to tell me how to get started because I have no idea where to begin.
>>
>>10702945
now take a brush to it and do the flames...
>>
>>10703940

if that's it in the photo you posted, yeah it looks like a knit.

so my pic is a shitty and oversimplified representation of knitting. imagine the black, red, blue, and green is all one string. i put different colors so you could easily see how it's just a bunch of intertwined knots. don't pay attention to the purple yet, i'll get to that in a second.

but also see how each knot has an intersection with string going out in multiple directions.

you're trying to make "distressed" sections that are essentially holes in the knitting where instead of knots with strong going out in multiple directions, you just want the string going in one direction.

this is where the purple lines come into play. you're essentially trying to take that mess of knots and distress it so that it looks like just the purple lines instead. to do this, you would have to cut away the sections of string perpendicular to the purple lines. but as you can see from the knot structure, if you do that, the entire lattice will fall apart.

sooo i guess what you would have to do to replicate that effect without risking completely unraveling the garment is like cut a big hole in it, and then find some way to tie off the loose ends that creates before they unravel. which would be incredibly difficult in my opinion as someone who does knitting and works with yarn. anyway, if you managed to do that, then you would need to string some yarn from end to end inside of the hole and tie it off to create the effect.

alternatively, if the item is acrylic, it might be possible to melt the edges of the hole together instead of tying them. although i wouldn't recommend that unless you were totally sure that the fabric and dye/treatment content was safe to burn.

Oh, shit, I found the video I was talking about. It was literally the second result. Guess I skimmed over it.

I'm pretty sure she ties up the loose ends in the video. Is that what you're talking about?

>>
>>10702945
>>10703401
How exactly did you do this? It turned out very well!
>>
>>10703579
looks like a garter stitch however the look achieved by the original sweater uses dropped stitches and was part of the original knitting pattern. to create a similar effect all you need to do is cut a single loop and pull and stretch and fiddle with it until you're happy then use a small needle and thread to keep the stitches from fraying further.
>>
>>10701587
>>10701594
>>10701597
This looks like something a hobo made out of dead squirrel. Fucking disgusting.
>>
>>10703287
So you diped a pair of chucks in bleach? By doing this you destroyed the fabric so expect them to break really soon also very important thing: wash them well before putting them on. Bleach is highly toxic and may burn your skin.
>>
>>10704429
Op's brown jacket was made with bleach by dabbing it on with cotton balls, the other one was made by dipping.
>>
>>10704078

to really stabilize the knit you'd need to not only tie off the original cut thread like she did, but also you'd need to tie off each individual loop that you see when she's pulling the threads down.

>>10701653
pussy, but now to a serious matter, is it possible to work with leather on a regular sewing machine? or i need a special sewing machine to work with leather or maybe just using thin leather, i have an old Singer machine like pic related

>>10701941
noice, if you cutted the inside part i recomend adding a bias tape to the ends so it doesnt fray, it looks good too when you roll the hem, if not just a zigzag will do it just fine

>>10702945
gerd jerb, but maybe a less concentrated bleach/water soloution would´ve worked better

>>10704706
it depends on what id of distress you want, theres the thread tension distress on the fabric threads, theres the holes distress, or the missing thread one or the wear distress like on >>10704957, most of them will partially ruin your garment beyond repair, practice with old garments or pieces of cloth to get a grasp of it, usually you´ll have to seww the borders of holes so they dont fray more than desired, like in frayed hems
>>

Started with latex glove, and a water bottle full of bleach, soaked the cotton balls same way you would do with nail polish remover, and then dabbed it on. Had to press pretty hard once the cotton balls got old (went through probably a dozen) and then waited for it to dry. Also did a wash/dry afterwords cause toxic chemical
