Go to beacons closet
It's a thrift store that gets designer items a lot. Even if you don't find anything you end up buying it's still fun to look at all the different pieces and try stuff on. There is usually a big selection
I'd also recommend going to soho and just walking around. Lots of shops there, go into any that strike your interest. Window shop etc..

New York City isn't really a cheap place for clothing. The thrift stores usually mark their prices up because of the area and most of the stores are pricier brands. There are some stores like Uniqlo, Gap and H&M that aren't as expensive but you can probably order clothing from them online anyway.
