a single handbag goes with a large number of outfits while some of those other items don't.

also handbags are more easily recognisable as being from a certain brand than most other items, so if people are buying them for the brand that's a reason they'd spend a lot on one.

the thing is most women aren't actually into fashion any further than "oo i like that purse" or "those shoes are cute", so they probably wouldn't be thinking about it. Expensive purses and clutches are also fairly common gifts so I'm sure that's a contributing factor
