eventually they moved into the mainstream as a standalone top, and now they're ubiquitous.

if you want the 2015 equivalent of wearing a tucked in t-shirt in 1949, then just go outside in a ribbed tank top.

Well if you're doing the ole chub and tuck, it really isn't flattering. If you're of a thinner build then of course it looks better. That said, its not for everyone. It takes a certain amount of confidence to pull it off.
