How can I tell if I have dandruff or dry scalp? I've noticed lately after shampooing and conditioner and I come my hair back, there's quite a bit of dead skin flaked at the roots. It isn't like this picture or anything not nearly as bad and it stays near the roots even when dry. What can I do? I'll try to post a pic while it was wet but its really hard to see
Pic is not me will post some of me soon

I had this problem when I moved to somewhere with colder climate for college. I think I solved it by just washing my hair really well every 2-3 days. I try not to agitate my scalp and use my finger tips to gently scrub my whole head with shampoo. Then condition and rinse while tilting head down and running fingers through hair away from scalp.
>>
>>10633043
Also I use bedhead moisture manic shampoo and conditioner, don't know if that helps or not.
>>
>>10633047
I use moroccon oil shampoo and conditioner by suave. Its support to be for "dry to normal hair"
>>
>>10633053
I live in chicago, but ive always lived here and I do not remember this being a problem unless I am just now paying attention to it. But I feel like I would have known if it was there before ya know?

rubbing warm olive oil onto my scalp & washing it out w/ shampoo helps my nasty dry scalp for about a day or two.
>>10635201
you look like u have dry skin, not dandruff, so using this might just make it worse. :/
>>
>>10635240
I didn't know that, would it be better to just have the shampoo and not conditioner?
>>10635271
Dandruff is dry skin I thought. And yeah I'm sure it is dry skin but wouldn't dry skin shampoo help?

Olive oil is a god send, try it.

Capitain Dandruff to the rescue!

First off. Dandruff is the common name for the medical condition seborrheic dermatitis. The condition can be caused by several factors. Most commonly, dandruff is a symptom of excess oil production in the sebacious glands in your scalp.
The excess oil production COULD be a reaction to the occurence of too much of the Malassezia fungus, a fungus that grow basically everywhere on the human body (the same one which causes yeast infections...ew nasty).

To fight the fungus, I rinse my hair with a diluted vinegar solution once a week or so. This makes the scalp more acidic, and makes it a less desirable environment for the fungus.

To deal with flakes and itching, I shampoo my hair every 2 or 3 days with Head and Shoulders. I would prefer something more natural, but it seems to the trick, and I can't be arsed to start experimenting with more natural products.

These are just the methods that work for ME, but give them a try and see if they work for you. Dandruff is really random, though, and other factors such as stress or diet can also make dandruff appear. Also excess shampooing can contribute to dandruff. Opt for mild shampoos if possible. There seems to be no definitive answer as to WHY dandruff symptoms appears and how to get rid of them, which can be fucking frustrating.

If you think you have seborrheic dermatitis, DON'T USE GREASY/OILY PRODUCTS (stay away from olive oil) as a remedy. While they might provide temporary relief, they actually contribute to the imbalance of oil production in your glands. Try mixing in some Tea Tree Oil in your normal shampoo.

Check out the wiki page for some images of how the condition looks on a naked head. I realized that I suffered from seborrheic dermatitis, and not dry scalp, when I shaved earlier this year.

If you "only" suffer from dry scalp, then I don't know.
Good Luck anon

After looking at your pics again tho, I'm pretty sure you don't have dandruff

At least tell us you're going to purchase 2-in-1 shampoo before we tell you it's a stupid fucking idea and will only make your dandruff worse.
>>
>>10636032
Can you tell me how it will make my dandruff worse? Or why is it shit? Just wondering because I am new here. I got no direction on what I should buy or anything.
>>
>>10636153
You there?
>>
Just use sulfate free shampoo and a conditioner, then put a little bit of argan oil in your hair and you should be dandruff free in a few weeks
>>
>>10636201
Also, start using product with a matte finish because this gel look isn't doing any favours for you. Makes your hair look thinner than it should.

I dont use any gel or anything, I just use Suave Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner. but ive always used it and only recently started getting flakes
>>
>>10632982
Dont shampoo constantly, for one. That makes it much worse. I have eczema so I naturally have very dry skin. What I do is I typically only use shampoo maybe twice a week, while conditioning usually every day. Personally I use Tea Tree shampoo and it has worked very well for me. I also try to shower in cold water as much as possible. And please for the love of god do not use head and shoulders.
>>
>>10636308
Why? Can you explain why instead of bashing something? Why no head and shoulders for dry scalp?
>>
ITT nobody can explain why things are "shit"
>>
>>10636217
Try using something with tea tree oil or coal tar instead, also it's not too uncommon for people to get dry scalp in the winter if they take showers with really hot water
>>
>>10636399
I guess it just recently started, what will help? Someone told me oil wouldnt work for my hair. What is this tar you speak of?

>>
Op here, It isnt bad now, it was kinda bad after my shower that night though. Maybe the water is too hot?
>>
>>10636792
I deal with my dandruff by using a vinegar rinse every 3-4 days. Don't like the smell? use a bit of conditioner afterwards. Also, always end your shower with a cold water rinse.

Additionally, shampooing twice a week should be enough, conditioning can be done more often if you have to.
>>
>>10636805
I think I just stand in a sculding hot shower and scrub my hair because thats how my mom taught me to do it

Op here what about this?
>>
>>10638535

I dobut it man, just shampoo less often, I have the same problem, dry skin, hair and scalp, and if I shampoo more than twice a week I get flakes.

I use coconut oil shampoo + conditioner I buy from Sally but only twice a week. Inbetween washes I just rinse my hair thoroughly with cold water, and use very little product (been using american crew fiber for years now).

If you actually have dry scalp you don't have to worry about your head smelling bad or whatnot, because what actually smells bad is the accumulation of natural oils, and since you lack those, you'd really have to not wash your hair for more than a week.

tl:dr get milder shampoo and conditioner, wash less often, get water based styling products
>>
>>10638770
So moroccon oil from suave shampoo and conditioner is a no no?
>>
>>10638770
When u shampoo oils get stripped. But I gets oily after 2-3 days again. Its so thick its hard to wash
>>
>>10638831

I don't know man, whatever works for you, try it out and if it doesn't work out check the Proclaim coconut shampoo.

>>10638854

shampooing every 3 days is ok, if you still get flakes after doing this for a month, go see a dermatologist
>>
>>10638873
Hope not, no insurance.. Dermavisit would be 250 dollars.. Ty for advice
>>
>>10635455
>diluted vinegar solution

So should I just mix vinegar with water?

>>
So, how do you actually get rid of dry scalp? All the treatments I can find via google are for dandruff and the only things I can find regarding dry scalp is lmao eat differently or lmao drink more.

>>
>>10639999

>>
I use American Crew Anti Dandruff shampoo and their Tea Tree Calming Conditioner twice a week and it's worked well for me
>>
buy a spray bottle, the kind that they use to wet hair at a salon and then spray your head with water

the water keeps your skin moist and the spray applies it as little tiny droplets that you skin will absorb without soaking your hair too much.

Wash your head with water only. Try letting your hair get greasy by not using soap. When you wake up, just stick your head under the shower head for 40 seconds and then air dry your hair. Next day do it again. Eventually your hair will get its oils stocked up again and you'll have nice, not flaky hair again.

dont listen to him tbgh
use your fingers to get rid of the oil on your scalp
