I've never watched anime in my life. It's literally children's cartoons. Watching them is a sign of a mentally and emotionally undeveloped person. Prove me wrong.
>>
>>10616364
i'm sure plenty of people on /fa/ watch anime

>>10616386
they're cartoons, not children's cartoons. shonen isn't everything my friend

i love manga
have been reading for like 15+ years (am asian, so shits pretty normal, not weeaboo)
can't stand most anime, especially opening/ending themes with the faggot ass music
also hate stereotypical japanese hero archetypes (timid, unstable, introvert pussies)

still read and love manga, but fuck anime

I regretfully did a long time ago. And I mean regretfully. If I could hop in a time machine and kick myself in the nads every time I wanted to watch some dumb fucking anime when I was like 15 or whatever, I'd do it.

More informative response: even if you assume anime was somehow stylish or interesting at some point - which it barely was, if that - it's dead as dirt. The whole scene in Japan has devolved into pandering to dumbshit 30something otaku who want to see magical girls fight stuff because they somehow think it masks their pedophilia. Studios are dying off, the "art form" (lol) is weakening, and predictably the domestic scene here in the U.S. is dying. Akihabara now is VERY different than it was around 2008 or so - and I mean like Akiba now is like 90% porn whereas it was 90% anime bullshit in 2008.

There used to be some genuinely interesting storytelling going on with manga, but I don't even remotely have the patience for that shit anymore.

>can't stand most anime
desu i love and watch anime + read manga and can say with confidence that 95% of anime is complete trash and should be avoided

watching anime prevents you from being effay in anyway
>>
>>10616423
>"art form" (lol)
fuck you, my friend
you are completely right, though. it's like miyazaki said, there's far too much pandering to otaku outside of the industry from otaku within the industry. avoiding trash is becoming more difficult.
what sort of shit did you use to watch? i spent a lot of my time watching anime and regret nothing (avoided trash)

being /a/utistic it bothers me that most /fa/gs just use anime to get traction on tumblr/ig - but then it's cartoons

>If I could hop in a time machine and kick myself in the nads every time I wanted to watch some dumb fucking anime when I was like 15 or whatever
You're 25, right?
That means this would happen in 2005. What's so bad about anime then? You still had most late 90s anime fresh and present, Gundam was still well known by western audiences, and 'moeshit' still hadn't fully manifested.

People today who are outside the sphere of knowing about it properly are phobic of anything related to Japan. I linked a friend that he would like by a Japanese musician (the album cover had manga-style art on it) and he said 'Thanks' then didn't watch it. Good Japanese storytelling still exists, it's just overshadowed by weaboos, mainstream series (Attack on Titan, One Piece etc). Recent shows that I can think of that I would describe as good were Gangsta. and Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai.

Animation is an art form, it's the intersection of filmmaking and drawing. If you dismiss it as not an art form, then you're dismissing those two as well.

I agree with the decline of Akiba.
>>
>>10616440
>what sort of shit did you use to watch?
I don't even remember to be honest. I think that - in and of itself - is a bit of an indictment of anime. Most of the stuff I watched with friends was so bland I don't remember it to this day. Cowboy Bebop was what got me "in," but my weird self used to love romance manga, if only because it always felt more focused.

Don't get me wrong, J-Dramas suffer the same issue. Nowadays, Japanese writers are incapable of taking an idea and running with it to a terse and satisfying conclusion. They all seem to want to set up something vaguely interesting and drive it into the ground - in other words, they set up a "scenario" (highschool guy lives with hot girls who are magical witch demons or someshit) and just hammer that theme until people stop caring. Some of that shit can be hilarious (I recently watched Black Suit Story drunk with friends, worth every second given how bad the show is), but still.

>>10616476
Yep - 26.

Admittedly, there was something kinda stupid and fun about the 2005 anime scene because it was still kinda-sorta reliant on word-of-mouth and buying new DVDs and generally just being hyped about something new and foreign and weird. Kinda like the old PS1/PS2 scene when a huge influx of weird Japanese games came out, like Mr. Mosquito or whatever. For a lot of us old fucks, it uniquely coincided with our jump into puberty and adulthood, which probably means it all seemed cooler than it actually was.

You're totally right that there's still good Japanese storytelling, and I'd be hyped as fuck if something new and unique and skillful came out. The whole fun thing about animation is that it untethers you from the practical realities of real life, so there's a lot of potential there. Case in point: Redline is a goddamn excellent movie, as is anything made by Matoko Shinkai.

I like that you're willing to listen to reason rather than just dismiss an argument.

I didn't get into anime as early as you, but my brief exposure around 2005-2006 showed me a much more 'scary' range of series that today's weaboos wouldn't touch. Full Metal Panic is one that comes to mind, as is Powerpuff Girls Z.

If you're into any kind of crime drama, Gangsta definitely worth a go, though you may prefer to read it. It has typical vices such as drugs, murder, prostitution and so on set in not-Europe with a slight supernatural element to it. The characters are somewhat relatable, and it carries a couple of interesting storylines throughout it. It sort of has a bleak feeling to it which comes through even in the coloring and details of the buildings that suggests life in the place they life isn't the best.
>>
i watch anime occasionally, when a show that piques my interest comes up. otherwise i watch american tv/film. right now i'm rewatching curb your enthusiasm.
>>
I dont watch as much has I used to but holy shit people who bring it up in public are the worst.

2bh I think anime is perceived differently now as it was to 15+ years ago. Back then with stuff like Akira and GitS, it was no different than watching any action movie but now its focused more on teenagers and everyday life.

Everything pre-shonen was fine.

if you're interested in exploring japanese animation which as reached that potential you described you should take a look at
anything by satoshi kon, angel's egg, flcl, evangellion, akira, welcome to the nhk, serial experiments lain, mushishi, samurai shamploo
though i doubt you have the time, they're just a few examples of brilliant storytelling in the medium

I've actually seen all of these and liked them. Man, I haven't thought of FLCL in years.

The Welcome to the NHK book - which, IIRC, inspired the show - is a really solid read. It's a great indictment of the lifestyle that should probably be mandatory reading for people on /a/ or /jp/ who think being a N.E.E.T. is a badge of honor.

There's so much shit out there, but
There's some really interesting and amazing stuff though too, Ghost in The Shell is a personal favorite, Akira, Berserk, Eva, if you're into that, Lain, Nichijou.
Some anime shows a definitive or interesting art style or animation, like Nichijou
Some shit like Yuru Yuri and NNB is just out there to be cute, or whatever.
I watch shows like the latter as a form of escapism I suppose, as do most others.
Yeah, it's embarrassing in some forms, and you definitely should not define your personality or outside appearance to others by the media you consume, because many just write it off as "out there" and weird, and those who perhaps truly appreciate it will write you off as a weeb.
Just do what you want don't let normies make fun of you over something stupid like your taste in grown-up cartoons. But don't present yourself as a nerd who's so caught up in shows about small girls that people are deterred by you.

>/a/ or /jp/ who think being a N.E.E.T. is a badge of honor.
Neo-/jp/ and all of /a/ thinks being a NEET is a badge of honor, while anyone who has actually been or is presently a NEET realizes its awful. It's not really a secret, it's just people who have started visiting this website in the past couple of years desperate to show off their 'otacool and edgy' status by doing something different than the norm.

I would enjoy being a NEET if I could learn things all day, but going by some definitions then I wouldn't be a NEET. I don't really have the discipline to do that in any great manner anyway, I'd get sidetracked too easily.

>>10616629
Jormungand is also an excellent series, probably my favorite so expect some bias, that has similar stuff to Black Lagoon. Centers on a child soldier who is picked up by a traveling arms dealer and focuses on their work through Europe, Africa and South East Asia. Explores comradeship between people who have little in common outside their line of work, as well as some parenting themes with a very likable set of characters and an intriguing storyline.
