First thread... I like to repurpose items for a better benefit. I've got this old kitchen table that I want to use as a work bench/table. The thing about it is I want a durable finish that will clean with ease. I have no idea what to use(never got into wood working) Don't care what it looks like but it needs to hold up to oils. Does that make any sense?

eggs
smear it with eggs
if it gets dirty you can clean it by adding more eggs

Polycrylic
Layer it in many, MANY thin coats. Sand with extra fine grit sand paper between coats after each coat is completely dry. If you have an air brush i heard they work nicely for this but never tried it myself. After 10-20 coats it will be as smooth as glass and just as easy to clean. Dont skimp on the number of coats though or else it will chip easily.

Clean your f'ing garage first.

Then create outer rim with tape to pour Envirotex lite on the table (use propane torch to remove any bubbles), let cure, done.
>>
NOTE: Step 1 assumes your table's surface is solid, rather than covered in a thin veneer.

1. Take a hand plane and remove the old finish; exposing a fresh wooden surface.

2. Sand smooth, using a tac cloth to remove sawdust

3. Stain if desired

4. Apply thin coats of polyurethane until desired finish is acheived; lightly sanding with fine sandpaper or steel wool between coats.

5. Rub down the final finish with #0000 steel wool

Should any undesirable wear occur, sand and simply add another layer.

If he wants a finish like glass, why not just use glass? It's an old table top that he doesn't care what it looks, like in a shed.
>Just slop polyurethane on it till it looks like it'll do the job.

Built something like this for my brother with a couple of 4x4 gate posts cut in 1/2 and a varnished interior door he didn't want any more. If it's just for mucking about, it'll work perfectly. If you want it for something serious, make a serious bench.

Bench in question.
Only better pics I've got have got him in it grinning like he'd won the lottery, so they're not going up here.

If this was me, I would do this:
-Go buy a gallon of Polyurethane.
- Sand down the table top with 2 different grits, maybe 80 grit and 120 grit, medium then fine.
- wipe it down with a damp sponge or rag
- let it dry
- Apply a coat of Polyurethane, then let it dry for at least 8-12 hours
- Check after it dries for bubbles or marks, sand them down (carefully)
- Put on another coat.
This will keep it protected for at least 10 years, probably more. Also, if I may, you need a better chair. I use a bar stool with a cushioned seat that swivels. Flea markets and thrift stores are good places to find them.

>sand table to bare wood
>coat in linseed oil
>accept that work benches get dirty and leave it the fuck alone
