Today i was down at the local market saw a hatchet i liked and bought it $15 (aud), is snail brand hatchet (literally) pic related. Anyway the handle on it is a bit worse for wear and am looking to make a new one and am looking for suggestions on good quality woods to use, am looking to use a darker coloured wood if possible.
Hickory, now fuck off
Short and sweet reply, thank you :)
Handles not even bad, just keep it oiled and drive another step wedge into it. No need to go full wranglerstar axe fag, use what works.
The head is a bit loose on it and lifts up quite a bit. A bigger wedge might help that?
This is what's in the top of it.
Other than what i've already posted, the handle isn't too bad. Was more wanting to make a new hanle to make it feel more mine.
Hickory is a little hard to get around my area, was thinking of using merbau for it. I'm only going to be using it for kindling. Not looking to go all bush master crazy axe man on it.
Oak or ash wood are often used. You can stain them if you want them dark.

Spotted gum if you're in Australia, got a nice straight grain and very tough
