Baking soda mixed with a little water to form a paste is a good, cheap diy toothpaste. Yes, it can damage your gums if you go crazy brushing as it is somewhat more abrasive than commercial toothpastes. Adding a little to commercial toothpaste is a good way to go. Using a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution as a mouthwash after brushing is a cheap, mildly whitening method. I wouldn't go overboard with the teeth whitening. Better to have off-white teeth than wear down the enamel decades sooner. Also, coffee, black tea and tobacco stain teeth pretty well.

I brushed my teeth with a baking soda and salt mixture followed by a hydrogen peroxide rinse for about 5 months.

It got rid of plaque as far as I could tell, but my mouth tasted like ass every single morning after a while and I believe my breath was also pretty foul (though not certain on this).

The only thing that actually bleaches your teeth without any real damage is hydrogen peroxide (carbamide peroxide basically same shit). Don't pull any fucked up shit with abrasives and other things that will damage your enamel and gums. The gel is relatively cheap on Amazon et al.

When i worked at a grocery store in my teens there were these two older guys that would come in and talk about fluoride and shit and tell me to only use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for dental hygiene. Their breath smelled like ass and so this mixture could give you shit breath.
