Gasoline did this how? I splash gas on me all the time, sometimes I use it to clean parts.
I just did fuel pump the other day, I had my hands in gas a good bit.

Friend has been restoring a 77 corvette and couldn't get it to fire. Decided we'd pour a little gas down the carb. As I went to dump it he turned the key and it backfired. When I pulled my hand back some of the gas spilled which caught fire and everything just went to shit.
>>
>>1228086

Oh jesus I didnt know it ignited on you, it could have been worse then. I had a burn like that and it felt like it was on fire for 3 days straight I had to fight the urge to keep my hand submerged in ice water . Take care of it don let infection set in, start taking vitamin E and buy some vitamin E lotion to use once it heals up. Its great for recovery. Also try applying some aloe gel for relieve once it heals a bit.
>>
>>1228086
I caught an old Isuzu pickup truck on fire doing that too. Spilling some gas and having a rag near the carb, it went up in flames really quickly.

Had to put it out with a fire extinguisher, it melted a decent amount of plastic shit and probably would have burnt the whole car and garage down if we didnt have the extinguisher.
It wasnt fun
>>
Had one backfire and light up once. Nothing major just put out flame with hand before the whole thing heated up.
>>
>>1228090
First day was the worst. Second day wasn't as painful and now on the 3rd day it's mostly just numb.

They have me on Tylenol 3s, penicillin and an antibiotic cream for burns. The hospital also arranged to have a nurse come change the dressings daily so hopefully they'll spot any issues pretty quick. Friday I'm supposed to see a plastic surgeon that specializes in burns. I'm guessing that's to decide if I'll need skin grafts but the nurse said it doesn't look bad enough for that. She also said one issue could be scar tissue and tight skin restricting movement which could require surgery
>>

One time i burned my hand with a soldering iron and it smelled like burnt pork. Maybe it means i'm part pig

I burnt 4 fingerprints on my right hand with organic acid 2 years ago. Still haven't healed completely.
>>
>>1228095

Yeah my hand felt tight as fuck during healing but after a few weeks it was normal it just felt a bit like plastic. After a while some of the skin scaled off and it was normal again. Hopefully you wont need grafts.

I'm sorry that happened to you anon. You're probably going to need a skin graft. I had an oil burn that looked similar.

They said oil sticks and burns deep though, and maybe the gasoline burned off quickly. About a week after it happened I had some sort of laser scan of my leg for blood flow, and when they saw how little there was they decided my leg wouldn't heal on its own. Anyway, I hope you heal fast.
>>
>>1228096
Yeah I once got a load of blood under my fingernail, hurt like fuck so used a soldering iron to burn through the nail and relieve the pressure. Worked great but smelled identical to cooked sausages, which was cool, I guess

Helped a friend re-build a big block Chevy in a drag boat. I was priming it with gasoling in a beer bottle as he cranked it.
When that bad boy fired up we scream hell yeah as I chugged a half bottle of gas.
I proceeded to dilute the gasoline with a dozen morebeers. I burped and farted gasoline for 2 days...

>>
>>1228120

I find it funny how burning a hole through with a soldering iron came about as the best decision there. Wouldn't a drill have been more adequate?
>>
>>1228217
Would it? Drilling needs some pressure, whereas the iron just needs to be placed on the surface. It's also antibacterial by default, although in the end you should just go to a doctor instead of doing either
>>
Shit. Feel better and heal up OP.
>>
>>1228217
Was in a similiar situation once (got a bloody blister under the nail due to cold exposure). I tried drilling through, which resulted in the drill sliding around. Obviously, using a centerpunch as on metal was not an option, so I ended up using the point of a nail file to pry the flesh from the nail. Interestingly, that didn't even hurt.
>>
>>1228219
I jammed my fingertip in a cardoor when I was 7, mother took me to the hospital and they poked/drilled through the fingernail with a syringe needle and quite a lot of pressure.
>>

Leafs have free healthcare. Still costing a decent bit for all the medications tho. The fucking cream is $20 a tube and I need 3 a day. I just hope I'm healed up in time for harvest or I'll have to pay someone to get my crops off

They decided to cut the big blister off today. It had a layer of hard puss which would cause problems so it had to go. That was not fucking fun at all. Feels like I burned it all over again. Said a new blister would likely pop up there and possibly have to be cut off again so I have that to look forward to
>>
>>1228213
Yeah some spots on my hand got really hard then blistered. My finger tips felt like sand paper then it hurt like hell stretching out as the blisters grew
>>
>>1228224
yeah, burn wounds are a bitch. Removing the protective film that the blister created over the raw flesh hurts like a bitch. It'll get better as it heals though
>>
>>1228228
Yeah once the raw skin was exposed it hurt like hell. It looks healthy tho so that's good
>>
>>1228120
>human blood black pudding when

I know of somebody who did it. It takes a long time to collect & freeze enough blood to do it.
>>
>>1228219

After checking the "gross part of youtube" the most popular methods are either drilling it or heating up a needle and then poking the nail. A soldering iron may be somewhat antibacterial but you should really be putting some proper antiseptic in there in any case.
>>
>>1228249
>antiseptic in there
for what purpose? You release the pressure and put a band aid over it. The coagulating blood does a good enough job of sealing it up
>>
About 2 months ago I was moving some junk out of storage and dropped a differential cover on my foot. Hurt alot, about a week later the flesh under my big toe turned black. 2 weeks ago I trimmed my toenails and noticed that the nail was thinner than my other nails. Last night I noticed that it was mostly separated from the toe. Cut off most of the left side with clippers.
>Pic related.
The brownish yellowish color is the new nail. Nothing compared to OPs burn, but I know it's gonna hurt sometimes as it pushes out.

Was testing a 2L 4 cylinder motor at work, had it set in a rim on the ground with a bottle feeding gas to the carb like an IV and just a pipe coming off the exhaust manifold. 10 minutes in the fucker started to tip forward, grabbed it by both manifolds to save it. The exhaust hand luckily didn't stick but was hard as hell. I kept pure lavender oil in my box as wifey said it was magic for burns, dosed my hand down and fuck me next day I was almost healed. No blistering.

What causes most of the waits is dumb fucks going to the ER for a little scratch or a runny nose

one time, must've been 15 years ago now, this friend of my mom's and her husband came over to help with yard shit
the last thing they did was trim the tree in the back yard, she'd hold a branch and he'd cut it off
with a chainsaw
at some point he slipped and her hand was nearly cut off
the things that struck me the most about it were just how fast she bled, and the smell
a gushing wound smells like a foundry or something, it smells like metal, way more than metal itself smells like metal
she got a fucking gnarly scar from it too, fortunately she kept her hand and all her fingers but I think she still has nerve issues with it

>>
fukn disgustin
>>
>>1228222
I used a knife as a punch, then used a tiny bit to drill through, worked a treat
>>
anon, why were you holding a lighter after sticking your arm in gasoline?
>>
>>1228980
Not sure what kind it was. I'm not very knowledgeable with stuff like that. I hadn't even dumped any gas in when my friend turned the key and flames shot up out of the carb. When I pulled my hand away from it some of the gas I was holding splashed onto my hand. Immediately tried to snuff out the flames on my shirt which of course just set my shirt of fire. I tried to get outside to roll on the ground but the shop was cluttered and I tripped. Got back up and knew I had to get my shirt off(button up) so I just grabbed it and ripped all the buttons off. By that point my friend was able to get to me and help pull the shirt off which snuffed out the fire on my arm.

Obviously I made some mistakes dealing with the fire but when shit goes down it's kinda hard to just stop and think. Instincts just take over for the most part. Had I been using a better container for the gas this likely wouldn't have happened as it didn't catch fire until spilled. Also of course you're supposed to put some gas in THEN try to start the engine. I knew better but wasn't my idea and I just didn't really think about it for some reason.

Bottom line is this shouldn't have happened and was completely preventable. I guess sometimes you just have a lack of judgement and do stupid shit without thinking. I hope if anyone that sees this thread ever finds themselves in a similar situation they'll remember this and make better decisions then I did
>>

Caught my hand in between a piece of red oak and the backstop of a double sided hydraulic splitter. Sandwiched my middle finger, broke it plus my ring finger. Went to the ER, got fucked around and sewed up eventually. They referred me to a hand specialist with an appointment two days later. He took my bandage off and said hey come back next week and the week after. Didn't want to get milked on copays so I never went back.

Went back to splitting wood exactly four weeks later. Finger is still swollen at the middle joint and my range of motion is limited. Hard to say if surgery would benefit anyone beside the surgeon and his wife. Letting it lie as a reminder to not be careless around dangerous equipment.
>>
>>1229048
I know the getting milked feeling, I had physical therapy for a neck injury. After the first 2 visits or so the rest of them werent worth the gas to go over other than to say "you dont need surgery, get refereed from your doctor and come back if something bad happens in the future".

Still, I know someone who refused to fix his broken knuckle and it healed really poorly. His range of motion is bad and it clearly looks fucked up. Surgery couldnt have made it any worse...

Just wait 5 weeks when the swelling stops and go back, look for an ultimatum if they would do surgery or not.
>>
>>1229026
yeah i've been trying to keep things moving as much as i can. have surprisingly decent wrist movement now but my knuckles have blisters now so my fingers can't move much. i try to stretch a little more each time stopping if i feel and sort of pain. don't need to be ripping shit open

I was trying to make a paper airplane when I got a peper cut on my index finger, apparently the paper had a flesh eating bacteria that normally can't penetrate skin but it went through the cut. Days passed and finger wouldn't heal, couldn't do anything because the slightest touch would hurt like shit, it was getting green but mom said it was just a bruise and would eventually heal. Lost my balance one day and fell right on that hand. Turns out the inside of the finger was rotten and it just popped till the point I could see the bone, pain wasn't that bad, I actually felt kinda releaved. Pic after the surgery.

infections are no joke. i met a guy outside a hospital in Northern Ontario that had half his leg amputated. he said that he was walking in the woods and a thorn poked through his shoe and into his foot. it was just a tiny little mark so he didn't think anything of it. about a week later it was looking funny so he decided to see the doctor.

turned out he had gangrene. they amputated his foot but the infection still kept spreading so then they amputated about his way up his shin. still kept spreading so they amputated at the knee which is when i met him. fucking crazy what he had to go through all from such a minor injury. always wondered if he made it or not.

>>1229496
honestly even i'm surprised. until now my experiences with my healthcare system have been for minor things and pretty shitty. it's always been very long waits and felt really subpar in general. now seeing how i get treated for something actually serious has restored my faith in the system.

tomorrow is the first visit to the specialist, hopefully he doesn't say anything bad. it looks slightly better everyday and the nurses haven't been too concerned with anything so i don't think he'll have any problems. i'm expecting he'll just want to see me again in a couple of weeks. if a get a chance it'll grab a new pic tomorrow

A friend of mine got poked by a steel wire from a worn tire, middle joint of middle finger. Got sore, then red lines branching off up wrist and forearm after some days. Was blood poisoning, if it had gotten much farther could have been fatal. Heavy antibiotics saved him, but he only went to the doc on his wife's insistence. Thank god.

Pic related- metalworking friend was doing some diy in his new workshop so he got a miter saw. No wood experience, probably was overconfident, smart guy though: very first cut, largish board, he engaged the blade on the far side of the wood. Had his left hand in blade path, 1/2 second later his hand was cut in half bones and all. When I met him he was about 9 months into recovery, they managed to put it all back together the psycho docs, looked pretty good but only 30% or so usage at that point. He kept the saw and keeps it on display as a reminder to him and his employees what happens in an instant of stupidity.

I own three radial arm saws. One I use for dados, the other is my crosscut saw and the last is a 'portable' model (for that era it means two man lift) that I use for fine cuts. They are notorious for removing the digits of morons. They are all over 40 years old and are nowhere near up to current safety standards. They have anti-kickback rods, standard blade guards and that is it. No carriage return springs, riving knives, or fancy retracting blade guards. I have never once been so much as nicked by one. You are the most important safety device in the shop. Picture related. The most dangerous tool is safe in the hands of a trained, attentive, and competent user. Even a plastic hammer made by Fisher Price could put some morons eye out if you gave them enough time to play with it.

Flesh eating bacteria is no joke and it spreads like wildfire.

Daughter of a family friend got an aggresive one.
Was out camping for the weekend, cut her leg on a tree swinging off of a rope swing. Ignored it, just a small cut.

Come monday she was feeling really bad so they rushed her to the hospital.

They amputated her leg immediately after being admitted, amputated one hand and were considering the other as it had spread and she died by the middle of the week.
Its crazy

I did this with my nail gun so I could only "tack" things into place temporarily without putting the nail gun to the wood point blank and firing it all the way into the wood

i'm now scheduled for another week with the nurses changing everything then i should be fine to go on my own. i also have to see the specialist in 3 weeks. i'd think it should mostly be healed by then tho. he did say if i don't like the scars he can "improve" them but i don't really give a shit and they'll serve as a reminder not to do dumb shit. as long as i don't have any long term issues like limited movement from tight skin i'll be happy. i'll get another pic tomorrow if i remember

I split a third of my finger off with a hatchet trying to butcher a chicken (first time OKAY!). Cleaned it with peroxide and alcohol, wrapped it up in gauze and let it heal. Guess i got lucky. Minor scar, healed fine. Was from the side of my index finder tip beside the nail to the first bend of the finger. Nearly the whole chunk, cut 2/3 of the finger in. I got mugged on my way to the supermarket when I ran out of nails once. Car pulled up to me and 3 guys got out, not including the driver. Decided to put up a bit of a fight.

Broke 2 ribs, my nose, lips were so busted I couldn't drink water without tilting my head back and pouring it down my gullet (couldn't actually close my mouth and create a vacuum in order to suck). Needed stitches on my knee and palm. Police drove me to the hospital in the back of their car (never been in the back of one before) because they were worried about a concussion/brain damage.

Was my birthday a couple of days later, had to cancel my dinner plans and cinema tickets.

I make sure I have plenty of nails in my kitchen drawer now. Upstanding englishman can't even go to the local wilkos without being accosted nowadays. Not sure if this counts as a DIY injury, though, I like to think that it does.

The fact that people think there arent already long wait times for serious care baffles me.
The wait times has nothing to do with how its paid for, its an inherent problem with supply and demand for specialists.

I tore the fuck out my throat and couldnt eat solid food.
The ER referred me to a specialist and it took over a month before I got an appointment.
He looked at me, handed me a sheet of paper that had generic liquid diet and shipped me off. Took ANOTHER 3 weeks before I got an endoscope, 2 weeks after that a barium swallow.

All in all, after deductible and insurance picking and choosing what it wanted to pay for it cost almost 10k out of pocket for me. And I pay $68 a week out of my fucking paycheck for this privilege.
Its a fucking racket
>>
>>1233114
that's fucked. i've been to a few specialists over the years and it's never taken more then a week to get an appointment. of course i do know plenty of people that have had issues with wait times for things like back surgery and MRIs but never when it's something urgent

the system has worked just fine for me so far but if for some reason i did have issues there's still some private care available or i can go across the border to the US. sure it'd cost me but at least the option is there.

also they said i'm healing well enough that dressings only need to be changed every other day now. i'm thinking sometime next week i'll likely be on my own but we'll see. hopefully over the weekend i'll be able to bend my fingers again

>medicare spending ensured that ALL healthcare providers charged the max amount that the gov would pay this means that all prices went up to accomodate that.

Guess what?
Its not just medicare spending, its the ever increasing flakiness of insurance companies not actually paying out full amounts to the healthcare providers.
This phenomenon has been happening for decades with the insurance companies.

We have had some of the most expensive healthcare since around the mid 70s because of it, its not something new. People act like this change just happened.

Its not a good system
>>
>>1233170

Nope, it had every thing to do with the "Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973"

Private insurance had already given them incentive to charge quadruple that they should have because of their willingness to deny the healthcare provider of full payments.
Your hypothetical has quite literally already been happening for decades

Socialism leads to communism. (If you believe that they are meaningfully distinct)

Are you implying that people would work freely for a lordship in exchange for tokens, if they could do otherwise? The history of industrialization in teh US and England proves you wrong, as does the history of the Enclosures and Benjamin Franklin's observation of the "Indians" being unwilling to dedicate their lives in service of an employer.
The message, statements and implications are true, but the judgments are simply corporate scare tactics. It is also true that you are a corporate dick-sucker who someday aspires to be the one getting sucked, and the implications of your self-interest in lying about socialism and your personal part in sabotaging it are also true.
>>
>>1235707
The monopoly on violence is not necessarily a problem if it is only used against those who initiate violence. Socialism can not exist under those conditions.

inb4 but what about voluntary communism?
Yes, that is compatible with liberty, but those who expose such a belief are so rare the movement basically does not exist and is only theoretical.

>Are you implying that people would work freely for a lordship in exchange for tokens, if they could do otherwise?
No.

>but the judgments are simply corporate scare tactics.
Why is this a problem? The scare tactic is beneficial to all.

>It is also true that you are a corporate dick-sucker who someday aspires to be the one getting sucked
False. I lack the personality and motivation to personally go into business. My goal is to fuck off and be sustainable and independent of others. If I supported statism, then I would be hindering my own goals.

>the implications of your self-interest in lying about socialism
Socialism necessarily requires the state to enact violence on those who have not committed violence, otherwise the government would be socialist in name only. That is no lie.

>your personal part in sabotaging it are also true.

The actual knuckle still doesn't have a vein on it.

We can both stop shit posting and chalk it up to a misunderstanding if you want...

You're the guy shitposting here friend, I clearly show a vein along a knuckle. I understand your autism and not wanting to concede the argument but you were in the wrong. Good day.

getting more hand movement now, enough that i can actually use my mouse and play some slow paced games. sounds like this could be my last week with the nurses too but i'm guessing i'll still have to keep it covered. everything seems to be healing well but it's slow and i'm getting pretty fucking sick of sitting around doing nothing. if the thread is still around i'll grab a new pic next time the dressings are changed which is Thursday

If you demand an itemized list of the equipment and drugs used in your treatment, you can challenge the hospital on the prices. They inflate everything to try and offset other costs, but if you tell them you aren't going to pay 30 dollars for a pair of gloves they won't argue with it.

Highschool chemstry says acetone should work.

>the usa has the highest cancer survivor rates on the planet

Only for breast and prostate cancer. Colon cancer, lung cancer and leukemia all have better survival rates in nations with single payer healthcare.

https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/research/articles/concord-2.htm
>>
>>1236553
Try rereading that chart.
The japan is an super outlier for lung cancer and can be disregarded, and childhood lukemia is a difference of a few percent from the top.

singlepayer is just obfuscation and false economy.

Wrist is good but knuckles are still pretty tight. They bend better now but only about half way to making a fist. Thumb has pretty decent movement too just the muscle is stiff and a bit sore.

>>1236625
They put cream on it each time the dressings are changed. hasn't felt very dry yet so must be working alright. The doctor said I can take it off and let it air out for an hour or so before I see the nurse. Tried that once but the cream turns black and gets kinda crusty when air hits it then they have to really scrub to get it clean.
>>
>>1236632
Nope I seem to be good there. The puss early on had them a bit worried so I had penicillin for a week. The cream is also an antibiotic so I think I'm reasonably safe.

I dropped a half full jar of carburetor cleaner and it splashed into both my eyes a couple weeks ago. I thought I was blind for a good few minutes while I was washing it out.

The smell makes me sick now.

Here we go again.

Folks, the problem with American healthcare isnt that it's free market capitalism, as it is very far from that. The problem is a system where companies use lobbying to influence regulation and the govt as they see fit. They keep barriers to entry high, and competition low.

Yet there are some benefits... a lot of that money goes to research, and the American healthcare industry is probably the most advanced in the world.

Anyway. This is probably not /diy/ related so this is my one and only post about this.
>>
>>1231053
>it caught on fire when carburetor backfired and shot out a 5ft flame.

I wasnt there, but it seems likely to me that what happened was that the flammable vapors from the can of gas you were holding were already down by the carb, even if you hadnt poured the liquid yet.

Anons, remember that flammable vapors from gas or solvents can crawl along the floor and reach distant ignition sources, like electrical appliances on the ground.

Be careful out there.
>>
>>1240487
>and the American healthcare industry

There needs to be a distinction between the "healthcare industry" and the pharmaceutical research industry.
CEOs pocket billions, and billions goes into research.
When it comes to the healthcare providers themselves, and the end consumer its a whole different ballgame.
>>
>>1240487
>muh competition fixes everything
Fuck off back to /pol/, neoliberal.
>>
>>1240538
As opposed to draconian companies who have legislated competition out?
>>
>>1240546
Competition is a mental defect. Collusion always wins, which is why the rich look out for each other and the rest of us play the social Darwinism game.
Everyone who thinks the act of creating losers helps the people win needs to go back to /pol/.
>>
>>1240548
No boromir, you can't have the ring of power, even if you say 'no no for sure dude, I am going to bring about a utopia with all this power'. No, you can't have the ring. It needs to be destroyed. You can't force people to be good. If you make a big powerful government to take money away from the rich people, the rich will just take over the government and 'pay' their fair share and get a thousand times back in devalued currency from the government. Oh, and the rich now have complete coercive force over everyone because they control the ring of power not you.
>>
>>1240607
>No, you can't have the ring. It needs to be destroyed
Exactly.
>You can't force people to be good.
Exactly. But, apparently, if you are a capitalist, you can redefine the playing field such that your system can't fail, only be failed, and your idle parasitic upper class is actually working by having money. A society that strongly discourages anti-social free-riding behavior can police itself.
>If you make a big powerful government to take money away from the rich people
You wouldn't need to. Money has no stable value without a government to create a stable demand for it through taxes. This is basic monetary theory.
You simply tell them their money's no good here.
>>
>>1240611
>Agreeing the ring must be destroyed.

We have no disagreement then.

I believe that in a natural pre-scarcity world, anarcho-capitalism will be necessary, and the only logically consistent government.

If you think you can get anarcho-communism or whatever else you got in mind working, great, more power to you. Just keep that anarcho in mind and we will be great neighbors.

I've gotten shocked like 20-30 times but that's nothing compared to this.

normies seem to fear electricity like its black magic powering their toasters and tv,
not knowing that regular tools and machines are the real killers.

outside of getting shocked and buring myself on my soldering irons, there is no real danger in what i do.
angle grinders and tablesaws, not to mention metal lathes, scare the shit out of me.
>>
>>1240634

>these two.
there are other ways than ancap and ancom you guys.

a major issue in the US is that doctors and pharma gets payed way too much.
us uses 17% of its budget on healthcare and it sucks
norway uses 9% and its great.

sure there are many other factors, and what works for us may not work over there, but corporate greed and monopoly are big contributing factors.
total free market wont fix it, total government control wont either.
its a though nut to crack, hence it hasn't been cracked yet.

I pray America gets nuked.

Not sure what a Cisco injury is? If it's an injury that could be prevented by practicing common sense, then yes, they are all Cisco injuries.
