I'd like to drill a 1/8" hole along the axis of a bolt such that it can accept something pushed inside. What does /diy/ think the best way to accomplish this is? I have concerns about holding the bolt in place, finding something hard enough to make the cut, and cooling the cut. I only have a Dremel and the drill press holder thing that comes with it.
>>
Dumb.
>>
>>1220946
Stack nuts up the bolt and then clamp it into a drill press go slow and quench as necessary
>>
You'll burn through Dremel drill bits like they're nothing and then when you drill from both sides because they weren't long enough you'll find that the holes don't align
>>
>>1220946
It's called a drill press vise.

Face off the threaded side on a lathe (a small hardinge or speed lathe from harbor freight will do) with a 35° turning tool ,use a combination drill (15% smaller than the drills you have for the drill presss) to start the hole. Then switch to the drill press for the hole on the thread side you want to make for the depth.
>>

Lathe, mill, or drill press.

Pick one.

Just install the bolt in a 1/2 board with a nut or 2 nuts (to help lock them in place). Place board with bolt into a drill press. Use a clamp to clamp the board to the drill press. Drill the hole. Use lots of oil and back the bit out every little bit to get rid of swarf and allot it to cool a little more. I've done this several times before. If the bolt starts to spin while in the board, use a box end wrench to hold it in place, it will spin around and hit the drill press arm (do that gently.)
>>
Clamp the drill bit in the vice and put the bolt in the chuck.

Now you have a lathe.

1. Drill a hole in a piece of wood with the desired diameter for your hole in the bolt
2. Drill a bigger hole not all the way through the size of your bolt
3. screw the bolt in place, turn it around, drill through the smaller hole into the bolt
>>
>>1221215
Awesome markup for drilling those bolts! You can see the hole was drilled after the bolt was machined and plated.

>>1221308
Boring bar!

Now go find one that will fit, shithead. You'd still have to DRILL a hole for the bar, you dog felching mongoloid. May a million hobo lepers nut down your throat.

None of the suggestions not involving a high speed drilling operation on a machine tool will work. Bring a few bolts to your local machine shop and pay the nice man. (Extras are in case drill bit breaks.)

Make sure you thread some nuts over the bolt as this will assist in getting it straight for the bore.

Anon, the only thing standing between you and some money is lack of a webstore and motivation. Get to it friendo
>>
>>1221033
A Grade 8 bolt is strong as a the steel in finished rifle barrels.

So you can bore, ream, and rifle them into barrels.
>>
>>1220946
Collet block + collet the size of your bolt shank.

If your collet won't squeeze down far enough to properly grip the bolt you can wrap a piece of paper around the threads to shim up the OD.

>>1221407
I didn't think OP wanted the hole through the head of the bolt as well...

Anyway, OP will still need a way to actually drill it centered. I suggest starting the hole with a center-drill and using a drill press or milling machine with a spindle and drill chuck that doesn't wobble a hole lot.
>>
>>1226342
machine screws might also have a major diameter on the threads closer to the spec, rather than undersized like most bolts.

like 1/4-20 socket head cap screws or something rather than just a 1/4-20 bolt.

if OP doesn't even have a vice for his drill press (assuming he has a drill press) he might be better off asking a machine shop (or anyone with a lathe, really) to drill the holes for him.

>>1220946
What tools does OP have to work with? Finding the cheapest way to do what he wants isn't easy without the pertinent information.

>I only have a dremel and the drill press holder thing that comes with it

Good lord... Check craigslist and facebook groups for a used lathe or old American-made drill press for sale. It can be a benchtop or floor model, it will be way better for drilling.

After you figure out how you want to hold it, you have to figure out how to align the center of the drill bit to the center of the hole. We can help you much more when you have more to work with.
>>
Seriously it's probably best going down to your local machine shop and flip them a couple of beers to do it in a lathe.
>>
>>1226390
>flip them a couple of beers

I see this every now and then, and can't imagine going into a place of business where I don't know anyone, and trying to trade beer for work. Why not just pay for it? Are machinists that primitive that offering to get them tipsy while they operate dangerous equipment actually works better than simply paying with money?
>>
>>1226342
>I didn't think OP wanted the hole through the head of the bolt as well...
It's not very hard to limit the depth of your drill desu

>Anyway, OP will still need a way to actually drill it centered
If you carefully widen the hole for the bolt to be screwed in place i think this is about as centered as it gets
It's really not that hard to align a drill in a pre drilled hole
>>
Clamp it into a bridgeport mill, indicated that its sitting at a perfect 90 degrees, buy a carbide 1/8th endmill, mill hole. done.
>>
>>1227502
It has to be a center-cutting end-mill if you want to drill with it.

A collet block would help you actually hold it square and without damaging the threads too.
>>
>>1221663
You'd be lucky to get a lathe like that for 500. More like a few grand. And yeah it is the only way to drill a hole like op is asking.
>>
>>1222151

Electrical discharge machining.
>>
>>1221412
>None of the suggestions not involving a high speed drilling operation on a machine tool will work.
Implying EDM is not the ultimate machining method to do this. Fagot.

Now why has no one suggested he hot forge his custom bolt?
>>
pic+drill
are you people stupid
>>
>>1229911
having personally done this many times i can say yes this is best way to get small holes in high carbon bolts and stripper bolts, blind hole or otherwise
>>
>>1229846
The solution I posted was accurate, practical and unlike you I've actual machine shop training and experience. If you thought otherwise you are /diy/ and metalworking illiterate and should not be posting nor should anyone who doesn't know the correct answer.

EDM is very nice but most machine shops don't have them and outsource EDM to those who do. (Nice money for them. My local EDM guru quit doing other machining except for himself and makes bank.)

OP needs holes. Choose accordingly.
>>
>>1230182
then you get shitty results tho

drill press + indicator you can mount in the chuck + collet block + center-drill + drill bit

might want a vice to hold the collet block if you do this a lot.

hell throw in a depth stop too so you can repeatably take the collet block out and put it back in
>>
>>1221040

new south bends are made in china, if you're going to buy a lathe, buy Taiwanese.

Chinese buy the tools they use to make their tools from Taiwan anyway, just cut out the middle man.

I used a piece of paper to shim up the slack between the undersized OD of the bolt threads and the collet contraction (it's also an old fucked up collet).

Measuring from ID to OD it's a few thousands off one way or another so not great precision--it is expedient though, pic related.

What OP should do is drill or bore an undersized hole in a round piece of aluminum held in a 3-jaw then make a slice down the side so it can compress and hold the bolt under tension from the 3-jaw chuck.

That would probably be more accurate than a collet and a piece of paper.

Reason I wouldn't just hold it in a 3-jaw is because for one the bolt might be too short, for two it will fuck up the threads.

I do a similar job for a friend of mine where I take a 50mm long m12x1.5mm bolt and drill it all the way through with a 7.5mm drill bit. Has to be dead straight as this is a drill guide for a long series drill. before I drill I also machine the hex down to 12mm because the standard socket won't fit in the bore of where these go. Been charging $8 AUD a bolt and get gets 10-12 made at a time.

He's very wealthy and very cheap, how much do you think I could charge that would still be well under the average machine shops rate?

You need to mount your drill bit UNDER the drill press and mount your bolt INTO the drill press. Then line it up carefully and press the spinning bolt into the drill bit slowly and while adding cutting oil every so often. This will ensure you have a clean and straight cut without a wandering drill-bit.
>>
>>1239717
>You need to mount your drill bit UNDER the drill press

doing this properly is as hard as his original request, unless you have some nice equipment that will hold the bit securely, square, and centered.
>>
>>1239725
If you can bring yourself to do it I have seen people clamp the drill upside down then lower the quill to clamp the shaft in a vise. It's ok if you were wondering exactly who to never lend anything to ever.
