Do all drill presses sold new today come out of the same Chinese factory? They are all the same and they all have horrible user feedback on Amazon and other review sites.
How best do I acquire a good American-made drill press without spending much? There are some ancient Clausings and Buffalos on Craigslist but they all cost a fortune.

estate sales or auctions
went to one last week, 2 drill presses went for $60 for some big ass craftsman made in the usa one and $20 for a fat tabletop one made in taiwan. $30 tombstone lincoln welders and $5 hand power tools
>>944332
The ~100$ 10 inch chinese drill presses arent horrible if you replace the chuck with a decent one.
I ended up with the Skil badged one.
I looked for 5 months locally and nothing but 70s import presses came up.
If you can find something locally, get it, but the chinese ones are accurate enough for whatever youd use a tabletop drill press.

The HF ones drill a 9/16ths hole with a 1/2 bit. OK maybe that's a bit much, but wobble can earn you up to 2mm on these shitty things.
Any wood stove experts in here? My father and i installed one in our home about a month ago. Yesterday i got up on the roof and noticed a buildup of creosote beginning to form. Any idea what could be causing this? Here is a video of the smoke coming out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNL0XmCiT90
what kind of wood are you burning?
>>943710
Started out bruning wet red oak, but now dead dead dead ash and white oak. The pic was from white oak.
Make sure to use dry wood and give enough oxegyn to completley combust the wood.
Hey /diy/
I have a question: A solar panel I have has a 5 watt output but only releases .65 volts and over 7 amps. If I hooked it up it a converter that has a 5 volt input, would the converter still work? I ask this because with 5 watts you could have a 5 volt 1 amp output. I apologize if seems like im making no sense.
no, you need to be in the input voltage range for the converter

elaborate?

How could one do that
1944 house, was advised that I could remove a wall that ran perpendicular to the ceiling joists. Twenty foot stick roof span, wall was two feet off center 15' across 30' span running east west. Removed wall and patched with no immediate issue. However now that it has snowed quite a bit the plaster (plaster over plasterboard, not lath, not drywall) is now cracking in five places and getting worse and an old hairline foundation crack close to where I removed the wall appears to be expanding. I believe its caused by the load transfer from the removed central wall to the exterior walls. The wall I removed was fifteen feet long running half way across the 30' span crawl space underneath. The logic in my advisor was that the structure of the side without the wall is identical to the side from which I removed the wall.
My question is, what cracking in the plaster is normal/acceptable. If I add a beam with a post in the center, just as a partial support to the roof joists where the wall was is that a good idea? The foundation is getting a little water nearby too which I will be fixing with raingutters soon.
And, if professional advice is recommended, where do I go without being taken for a ride?
Attached pictures of the cracks, attic and the crawlspace.
In this picture you can see the outline of the old wall
So I have a drone with 3.7v/500mAh battery, which lasts about 5 minutes. I want to connect it to DC power, but the fucking Chinese power source I ordered is broken and only let's me adjust the Volts.
What kind of power source do I need and where can I get one?
>>943024
What's the point in tethering a drone? Ma as well put your camera on a stick.
>>943024
>power source I ordered is broken and only let's me adjust the Volts.

And what do you want to adjust?
I am diving head-first into diy laser engraving/cutting with pic related kit. I ordered longer rails and extra belt to replace original frame to give myself more room to work/fuck up. Does anyone out there have recommendations on how to best go about getting started?
>>942198
Etch your name in a piece of wood. I'm sure this is how everyone gets their start.
>>942198
Can that be used to cut paper? 180g/m^2cardboard?
>>942198
few basic tips from when I've used these:
get an extractor or do it outside, the fumes aren't good for you
try and cut in one pass, re-running sections burns the sheet pretty badly
cut a circle first, they're least affected by axis acceleration
Does /diy/ into lockpicking?
I would like to get into lockpicking. Just saw the new video from bosnianbill,h e reviewed a learning kit, but I don't know if it's worth it.
What toolkit would you recommend?
>>940547
I'm just now getting into it myself (my picks haven't even arrived yet), but I ordered this to start off with
http://www.lockpicktools.com/8-piece-set-prh/
Alongside a practice lock to work on.
i pick but i haven't picked(heh) it up for a while.
last thread there was a huge shitshow about breakins and nigger accusations for some reason.
I've seen several peaceful hobbypicking threads on here so there is no need to justify it to trolls.
I'm a novice out of practice at best, but this is my take on it.
get a cheap pick set on DX or something, my first set was supercheap and worked fine.
now i got a southord set, hasn't upped my game much 2bh.
proper tension rods where the best part of the kit for me.
getting a cutaway lock is what helped me get started.
you might think seeing inside the lock is cheating but it will help you learn.
you can tape over the opening, then look if you get stuck.

How hard would it be to build an exo suit like HAL?
It seems to me keeping the legs balanced would be the hardest part
>>940228
not hard if you have the skill and resources
very hard if you dont
>>940232
>easy if you know how, hard if you don't
Wat
>>940228
Hmm i'm making a robotic hand that mirror my other hands moves and i can tell that it's not that hard. Also i make it with lego ev3 so i don't have the best tools.
Hey DIY I've been tasked in varnishing this kids chair that got gifted to a school I do work for sometimes. It's been covered in beautiful really lovingly painted images of classic Disney scenes.
I have no idea what paint was used. What kind of varnish do I want to put on this that won't melt days of someone's labour away.
>>944457
Carefully test it on a less noticeable spot on the chair. Let it dry. Still looks ok? Do rest of chair.
I've been making hand painted wooden boxes for commissions, they are just artists oil paint on wooden boxes. I've been trying to find a good clear coat to give it a finish like the one in the picture, but so far I've tried varnish made for oil paint and it has a sticky feeling and it's not smooth at all. I'm trying to find a clear coat finish that's safe to use on oil papint
A few coats of poly sanded with successively finer grit sand paper in between coats would do well.

LCD screen replacement
no threads
ok, i need some help
>had a party
>things get a wee bit out of hand
>during the "out of handness" tv gets a hit
>screen is dented
>screen is fucked
can i replace it?
where in UK can i get a replacement?
i've spent the last hour and a half on google and cant find either a supplier of LCD screens that match my model number or istings on ebay for anything other than assorted innards.
any help is useful.
ta.
>>943745
If you go oer twenty, your motor could get denty!
>>943745
return it to costco
It usually costs the same as the TV itself to replace the panel. If you can't really afford a new one, would it be a dick move to tell everyone who attended "Hey, my TV got broken during the party and can you chip in a few quid to replace it?"
I want to make a foot pump sink but these primer bulbs are way too expensive. I just need something I can hook some hose to and pump one way for wash water. Any suggestions?
Go to Petco and grab a gravel cleaner for a fish tank. Tho might be more expensive for the larger scale stuff. Do a little homework maybe and see if its cost effective
>>944388
It looks like they are about 20$
You arent going to find anything much cheaper that will last.
The cheap syphons you see are plastic bulbs which fail very quickly.
If the project is going to be used a lot just spend the money.
If its used very little get a 5$ gravel pump with a plastic bulb. Make sure not to get the siphon actuated ones without a hand pump.
>>944400
What about for tubing? Would the cheapest tubing be the clear plastic stuff in the garden section?
what can i add to carpet to make it more like hardwood/floor?
i want to teach myself how to dance. the place that im living in right now (renting, so i cant just replace the carpet with hardwood) has a nice basement where i can teach myself how to dance. problem is, the floor is carpet which is something that's slippery compared to concrete or hardwood when wearing shoes.
so what can i put on top of carpet to make it more like hardwood or concrete? i know i cant just assemble some small patch of hardwood and put it on the floor, because that would end up sliding around a lot.
>>944304
>because that would end up sliding around a lot
no it wont
>>944304
Wood
One of those mats that lets computer chairs roll easily on carpet is the my best guess
Hey /diy/, I need some advice
I'm trying to put together a DIY version of the Dune board game made by Ilya. I want to paint wooden tokens and stick a vinyl sticker to make the pieces. The plan would be to apply to the wooden disks, in this order:
- Acrylic paint primer
- Acrylic paint
- Acrylic gloss spray varnish
- Vinyl sticker
- Acrylic gloss spray varnish (again)
However, experimenting beforehand on a piece of wood, I found that the piece remained sticky/tacky to the touch, even after 2 weeks of drying in a fairly dry weather. I didn't put the piece under dehumidifier or fan, I just let it dry outside (protected from the sun).
I'd like to know if you guys know anyway to deal with this stickiness. Maybe allow a good drying time between primer, paint and varnish, or another product to apply after the last coat of varnish.
Picture related, but not my set.

I hear they're pretty creative with transportation. Their cars are old as fuck and they keep them running with cardboard gaskets, and adapt bike engines and shit.
