Was thinking about getting a drone, I just got some property in colorado and would like some aerial photos of the land, and for a bit of fun. Any advice or information for me?

I used to be knowledgeable on the hobby before drones were really a thing, back when they were just called quadcopters and rc planes.

The easiest way is to pass your bike test and buy a real bike. That way you won't scrap a moped or fail the MOT.

Cmon man real answers please. Ive heard theres like a wire that u can cut and u can rev it all you want . Any idea on which one it is?

Hi /diy/!

So I'm a first year EE student and I have to build a version of the arcade game whack-a-mole with real whackable moles (so not just flickering LED's or something like that).

Now, I really like electronics but don't know anything about mechanical components to save my life (I have some know-how on simple (stepper) motors but that's about it). Yet I need to design a mechanism for moles to pop up that I can electronically control and I need a way for the moles to be pushed down again and to detect this. I guess I could accomplish the popping with a spring and some kind of blocking mechanism controlled by a stepper motor, but I don't have many ideas on what to use for that mechanism, let alone which sensor to use.

Now I'm not asking for a blue print. I'm just asking what kind of components you savvy people would use so I know in what direction to look. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance /diy/

this doesnt sound like a real 1st year project. I think you chose to do this. what is your actual assignment?

this project is beyond 1st year EE.

too many mechanical components that will be costly to produce a working product that will function like an actual whack a mole and not fall apart on the first whack.

pick something simpler like a lite brite.

Found this site just now. Seems cool because I don't have a laser cutter or the money to buy one either. Has anyone tried the service? I'm a European so will that make ordering more difficult/costy?
Any ideas what kind of cool shit to do? I'm a wizard with vector design programs but don't have any ideas.

I registered and didn't do anything so they started bombing me with automated e-mails and eventually offered my first design under $20 for free so that's pretty cool I guess.

I think laser cut wood stuff ruins the fact that it's even wood.

Why not just buy something plastic? Why not choke a penguin?

Hey diy, the side of the ash tray broke in my suv. I tried supergluing it with no success. I'm thinking I have to step it up but Google failed me. I did find that jbweld makes plastic epoxy called plastiweld epoxy putty. Have any of you tried this or are there better things to use? I'm not concerned with it opening up again as I don't smoke.

>supergluing

if it is done correctly it should be fine
>>
>>945620
That's what I thought but I left it there for 3 days without moving it and as soon as I took the support away it fell off. Tried it again with better glue placement and the same thing happened.
>>
>>945617
any 2 part epoxy will work, any JB weld should be fine.

Don't quote me on this
3 parts sulphuric
1 part nitric
cool in ice and salt bucket
slowly rotate
drip in glycerine down the side of flask
take out the nitroglycerine

or use cotton instead of glycerine, just leave the cotton in for 5 minutes and was in water 5, 6 times and leave to dry, you have low explosives if you encase it properly.

I made meth... the hard part was scraping all the phosphorus of the match boxes.
>>
>>941884
Do the copper cycle.
>>
water + iron creates rust at the interfaces.

for a fun experiment to do with the kids place an iron sheet in a trough half full of water and once rust shows up examine the formation of it.

Hey /diy
I appreciate your advice and now I have one question. Pic related has a mini USB in. I have a couple of cables to rip off. My netbook needs a speaker asap and right now I cannot afford a shitty walmart $17 ones.
So, how should I connect wires to make a cable connecting generic 3,5 outlet of netbook with mini USB inlet on MP3 player? I googled a bit and found some color schemes and layouts but still not sure. I will cut wires and post pics in comments

btw, if somebody knows how to hook up bluetooth usb adapter to lucid puppy linux and connect to wireless headphones please give me a hint

I have found layout like this. Which spots should I connect 'left', 'right' and 'ground' from my computer audio?
>>
>>946803
Your speaker thing is using a usb connector out of spec.

A fairly safe assumption is that it still uses the +5v and ground pins as normal so you could charge your box thing with any standard usb outlet.

The line in presumably runs on the data pins then. Ground is ground. Left/Right goes to data- and data+ respectively. Or reversely. There's no real way to tell without experimentation, and most sound cards will just let you flop the channels if you get it backwards on your connector.
>>
>>946801
Easy as pie. Just take the audio cable for your pc, cut one end off of it, strip the ends of the wires so the copper is showing, solder them on to an analog to digital converter, then solder the ADC to an audio over USB digital module. Finally, connect the audio over USB module to a mini USB cable and you're done.

You'll probably need a 5v supply, some breadboard, the ADC chip, the audio over USB chip, some assorted caps and resistors, and possibly some jumper wire too.

About the oldest substantial tool I have is pic related but mine is red.

i have lots of hand tools that have been passed down a few times so plenty of shit that dates back to the early 1900s. might be some even older but without any date stamps it's hard to know for sure

When I need a tool I hunt for them in yard sales and antique shops. I think the oldest thing I have a Universal #2 Food Chopper (Landers, Frary & Clark) and wood planer, both from the late 1800s and tons of stuff from 1900-1950.

I'm looking for a drone to make skating montages for YouTube, it has to have a decent/upgradable camera and I would prefer it had some sort of gps rout autopilot/follow mode.
Budget: 1.500$ if possible I'd like to have 300-400 left for a new board.

So what you're asking for is something around $100 to $200?
This had better be bait...
>>
>>945475
Unless that is supposed to be $1500 instead of $500. In that case you can't go wrong with a DJI phantom 2. Usually go for around $800 aud, and you can use it with a gopro or something similar
>>
My bad I'm looking for something between 1100$ and 1500$

How can i turn my Galaxy s4 without a battery?
Is there any DIY to simulate a battery?
when i short-circuit the first 2 pins of the 4 the battery connector has, it reaches the bootloader, but when i try to enter recovery, it reboots.... can anyone help me understand what do i have to do?

You could try jumping the usb connector to the battery terminals, but an S4 battery is only $12 CAD on ebay.

Looking to buy a dremel. Doesn't actually have to be a dremel, it just need to no be shit. Any ideas?

I'm mainly looking at electric ones right now until I can afford to get a decently-sized air compressor for a die grinder. Speed control would be nice, but not totally necessary.

So what does /diy/ use? What's good, and what's shit? More important, what has LASTED?

>>
>>945684
Shit, ignore tripcode. Was trolling on /k/.
>>
>>945684
You have to go to the extremes.

Buy the most basic 2 speed dremel 200, they usually last well with abuse, but there are some bad ones that shit out. For 40$ its fine, its pretty much baseline.

Then from there any extra money you spend doesnt get you shit. No return on your extra money until you get way up in price.

If you want something that will last, get a Foredom.
But at that price point you are looking at entry compressors and die grinders.
>>
>>945712
Plan is to eventually have a 600gal air compressor hooked up to pipes throughout my entire shop. Until I can afford that, I need to make do.

Have cordless saw technology come far enough for a professional to be justified in buying it over its corded counterpart?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No.

The power is much closer to a corded saw but a corded saw is still king. More power and infinite run time.
>>
>>945355
> justified in buying it over its corded counterpart?

The 18v cordless lithium saws are very capable saws.
The question doesnt make sense though, a professional is obviously going to use corded tools for money cuts and other important stuff.

The tools are for when you need to make a cut when you are not near your corded stuff, where taking a cord would be hard or dangerous.

And yes, its justifiable to some depending on the trade.
>>
>>945355
>>945380
This.

Yes but no.
I have both and use both. for money cuts you want to use corded. It's all right tool for the right job

For /diy/ projects or profesional?
I personally use cheapest chinese ones for my diy-ing. Also found a supply for the angle gears so if they crap out for some reason i just replace them.
For pro, makita or pro line of bosch (cheaper one are even worse than cheap chinese one...) Hilti makes great equipment also.
>>
>>945317
4-1/2 inch grinders?

Just pick a price range and buy one.
The dirt cheap Harbor Freights ones last, so if you jump to a 50-100$ one by a big name youll be fine.

FWIW I ended up with a milwaukee after my harbor freight one died, and its handled a lot of use and abuse.
>>
Metabo. Then Bosch. Then Dewalt.
