I'm moving right now and want to design a custom desk that'll maybe fit all my needs. I was wondering what the best program would be to actually draft an idea up.

I'm finding that Google Sketchup is probably the best to use, but I figured I might as well ask you guys before I do anything.

We do custom furniture where I work. Sketchup is definitely used, but for actual design from a low-level (think CNC use) we use CabinetVision and AlphaCam.

What should I like the interior of this case with?

I'm building a briefcase desktop, figured the foam lining would raise my temps too high, so I stripped it out. Only problem is that plain wood looks too shoddy.

Looking for something metallic, preferably cheap. Would aluminum do well being cut, drilled, etc? Or should I shoot for something better.

How well does it deal with heat though?

I'd hate to have parts get ruined from poor heating.

I am trying to help my mom figure out what's wrong with her circuit. I know some electrical theory, but I'm shit at troubleshooting.

If I disconnect the underground cable from the 1st outlet, the 1st outlet reads as being completely normal. But when the underground cable is connected, as is normal, the lights only flicker occasionally; and more to the point, on the 2nd outlet I'm reading 120V hot to ground (okay, that's normal), and 120V NEUTRAL to ground (~0 volts in between hot and neutral). This problem just developed all of the sudden, it was working fine before. I understand the reason the lights are only flickering is that there is almost no voltage differential between hot and neutral, so no power is flowing through the bulb.

My first thought was that the underground cable got damaged, and the hot is energizing the neutral, but I kinda thought that would just trip the breaker, which is not happening... Any thoughts besides "replace the underground cable"? (I am planning to buy an Outlet Tester in case something like this happens again, but don't have one now.) Maybe the neutral is open in the J-box?? I wanted to look at things longer, but was freezing my ass off out there.

Greatly appreciate any thoughts.

replace the cable, it's fucked
>>
>>949218
Did you get 120 neutral to ground with the light switched on or off?
A loose neutral could cause flickering, if you measured with the light switch on but the light bulb off you would get 120v neutral to ground because no current was flowing. So that's my guess is a loose connection. Check all the connections.

If you want to check the cable you can rent a proper tester that dumps high voltage through the cable to check insulation resistance as well as conductor impedances etc. Standard electricians kit.
>>
>>949218
Is there a possibility that you rolled wires somewhere? Could be that you have hot switched to ground at the J-box which would give you 120V to the L/N terminals at the outlet. Just speculation.

Can someone recommend me a heavy lifting drone? I have some surveying equipment, it weighs about 7kg and I want to do 30 minutes of surveying per charge. My budget is £3,000. I know this is the /diy/ board but /g/ doesn't know anything about drones so I ask here.

Rent a fucking chopper with a pilot.

A drone will be too expensive to operate, rent or buy. It's too early in the hype cycle for usable and effective commerical drone applications.

If you're thinking of buying or building a drone and operate it yourself, prepare your anus. CAA, FAA and comparable aviation agencies will rape you.
This drone needs to be gas powered and is WAYYYYYYYYYY too heavy to operate legally within a mile of population.

Don't be a faggot. Drones are not a solution.

Keep dreaming buddy, even light weight commercial drones are going to be pushing £10,000

I read that the CAA weight limit is 20 kg.

I have two 3d printers (Replicator 2x clones), and I design and print prototypes for my father's company. I bought them specifically for this purpose, but I'm now thinking I could also do other jobs on the side with them to make extra money.

How would you go about advertising yourself (appart of social media) in a way that would reach that specific people who would need your services?
This is not limited to 3d printing, any advice about advertising your DIY projects would be useful.

First, get a website. Make sure your social media is up-to-date. Your website should go over what you are capable of and often means you will need some sort of demo video of your modeling, live demonstration of your models used in action, and the variety of awesome you can offer.

Then, you need to have a constant contact system that updates the second someone emails or calls you. They need to be able to call, email, or live chat you. You should also have video conferencing available for the larger clients.

After your website is set up, DON'T list any prices. They will need to call you for that. Make it clean and easy to navigate and short and sweet.

From here, it is going to be about discussing opportunities with potential clients. You may need to call out to places that may need 3D printing services or even modeling replication of some kind. Dealerships, Casinos, architects, etc. There are tons of applications for this and honestly, I was considering doing this and getting into (hopefully) a self-established field that I could force a business need for. Problem is, I'm not very good at modeling, only editing and cinematography. But I see far more application for this than most and I really need to get going on those tutorials.

Anyone into bone carving? I live in Norway and was thinking of maybe carving some simple jewelry and weapons with runes to offer for sale on various local norse reenactment groups on facebook. The dremel 3000 gold kit looks like it would pay for itself, now I'm looking at other tools. Any tips?

could I get /diy/'s advices

i'm trying to make a cheap wearable device.

I have some idea of the electronics but my programming knowledge is almost non-existant.

What im doing at this stage is straightforward

i printed out circuits with some very basic signal conditioning (low pass filters) for sensors of physiological signals (PPG, accelerometer, thermistor, etc.) onto a pcb and am going to solder it to I/O port of an arduino uno.

I'll be grabbing data from the arduino's serial port and sending it to a PC via low-power bluetooth module. I'm using Eclipse to write a program in Java to plot the data in real time from the sensors (Java because I was hoping of port an app on my shitty android phone to view it after developing it on PC)

I've never written a GUI with any programming language.

Would it be unfeasible to learn what I need to within ~1 week to write this GUI (plot signal data in real time on a PC)?

Are there any online resources / tutorials you could recommend that would be good for what I'm trying to do?

any advice is appreciated

I think a week would be a very aggressive schedule for learning what you need to know.

You can't just learn exactly enough to do what you want to do; you have to learn some programming fundamentals first.

Tl;dr technically a very motivated person could do it. Maybe the top 5% of motivated people. Are you in the top 5%?
>>
>>949330
yah easy.
>GUI
uhh, use one of those microsoft visual programming suites.
find the libraries required for getting your serial data and analyzing it. should just be STDIO.h or whatever. get it to print to screen. but before you do that, just write a simple terminal app that just gives you a periodic 1s update of the incoming data printed in plain text to a screen. once you can print that data to a screen then you can just input >> arbitrary output to any app. hell you could make winamp change song when you started working out and your heart rate went above a certain threshold. animation stand still has their personal edition for free. haven't played with it in a while so I dunno what all it does now. used to be the only restriction was the overall size.

I had a cracked version of toon boom studio years back, it was awesome for doing this stuff. it's subscription-only now.

Yes it's free though you should use it strictly as a supplement. You're probably not going to learn any language solely from Duolingo, not well at least.

Also, Russian is hard, what other languages can you speak?

Jetpacks are a far way off. For full flight the fuel to weight is way off, closest would be the ductfan packs but thats not jets. The jets OP showed wont fly the fuel needed. Not to mention the rules, laws that literally keep us down. Hoverbike just started low untethered flights. Backpack helicopter guy still cant take off.
But if your intended to be touching the ground mostly. Mostly?
Jet bikes with airbag jumping suspension will soon be an x-games favorite in time.

Shouldn't be too much work since all you would have to do is make a custom caseback with a little drawer in it but this would increase the thickness considerably.

sup /diy/

I'm currently trying to convert my old keyboard into a MIDI guitar pedalboard, but I figured the keys would be too small for my feet so I'm planning to put some washers on top of the keys. But what should i do so that the washer would stay on the keys? Tried superglue but it doesnt work. pic related.

TLDR : how to stick metal washer on keyboard keys

Don't do this. Get an arduino, some real DPDT switches and make a MIDI controller with it. It will be easier and more reliable than what you're attempting to do.

"Superglue" is absolute shit for anything other than repairing broken pottery and the occasional plastic model kit.

Two-part epoxy will hold fucking any thing to any other fucking thing. Grab one that lists both plastic and metal on the packaging. Should be about $5.

sup, Electronics newbie here trying to design my first regulated DC power supply. Why does my transformer explode when I simulate my circuit in multisim?
I have managed to prevent damage to the transformer by placing a high power resistor at 25 Ohms between the output of the bridge rectifier and the capacitor bank, however this causes a large performance decrease. Is there a way to fix this without significantly reducing my output?
The transformer should output approx. 24Vrms AC.
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I had a similar problem with some other simulation software (livewire). Had a similar setup: transformer -> bridge -> caps -> regul -> caps -> load. For some reason, the bridge diodes keep exploding at the start of the simulation. Never solved the issue with the simulation, but our best guess at that time was that the unloaded caps (at the start of the simulation) were threated as a short circuit, making the diodes blow.
>>
>>949132
Uh... Because the peak value will be around 34V and you have a 25V zener there?
>>
>>949143
I decreased the transformer output voltage to 12Vrms and removes the zener, the same thing happens. I tried putting a voltage divider in place of the zener aswell to no effect

dont start a hydro garden in your apartment. you will get v&.

you will spill water everywhere and make the house moldy. stop now.

get some small pot plants and stick them on your windowsill or a generic aerogarden.
