If you're going to use one or two in a lifetime then no.

If they're something you might use here and there then yes. It's hard work doing it by hand and using a drill or impact driver makes it easy for the teeth on the fixing to chew up the plaster board.

I've never heard them called mollies before though.

I bought 100 meters of hemp cord for $4, I used it to make a suspended cabinet, with stretched cord, and it makes me wonder what else I could buy which is ridiculously cheap, compared to its utility.

For example, microcontrollers and lasers are ridiculously cheap for what they can do, as are many electronic parts.

I think there should be a list of stuff which is ridiculously cheap and which inventions can be made from.

For example, hydrogen and oxygen are ridiculously cheap, because you electrolyse from water, and they have great utility to make balloons or water breather (you can also make caustic soda/chlorine from salt water electrolysis). The non-cheap equivalent would be to use a 12V motor with battery to lift your stuff, when just hydrogen would do.

What is the most inexpensive rocket fuel? I have to send bacteria and human bitches DNA out of the fucking solar system before we all die and it explodes. Coal is another thing which is quite cheap for its power. It has 24 MJ/kg while alkaline batteries have 0.5, and lithium-ion from 1 to 2 MJ/kg. Another cheap thing is mylar fabric, in survival blankets, which are cheap mirrors when stretched.

In another category, it's slightly immoral but with a wire saw you can go cut down some trees for material, and it costs less than $2. I'd love to know what is the cheapest structural component for rigid constructions under no-to-light stress. I'm considering melting soil or rocks into bricks, with a lot of amperes. I think that'd be the cheapest, but it's slightly dangerous, and immoral, and annoying. I admit that along the same idea, I considered going around at night to take the metal bars from hidden and visibly useless fences. Call the cops, I'm a psychopath on the dole, banned, and behind 7 proxies.

Anyway y'all will have nothing to say, as every time I post something, people have nothing to say, and it's annoying. I'm leaving. Also, there may be potential in tensegrity structures stuff. Goodbye

Make a gauge out of a bobby pin or something.
Like make a small hole, the straighten the bobby pin out.
Create a square bend at the end, then once you have it in you can mark the pin. Pull it back out and measure it

Use toggles or sleeves, instead. Then it doesn't matter whether your drywall is 1/2" or 5/8".

I wiped down this wood bookshelf with some wacom wood oil, so now it's deep and shiny. How do I seal it so the oil doesn't rub off when someone touches it?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
i think you need wood finish if u want to keep it shiny
>>
you don't. If you did it right, the film will harden, as the oil cures. If you did it wrong (ie, didn't wipe off the excess well enough)... well, you're fucked.
>>
Look at the incredients, because I'm not familiar with that particular product, but I'd guess its probably boiled linseed oil with maybe a little solvent.

Was the wood finished before? Because if it had a film finish (poly, wax, shallac, etc) it isn't going to penetrate and will just turn into a sticky mess on the surface.

If the wood was unfinished, it will penetrate and cure into a good looking, but not very protective finish. You can top with any of the above finishes after it cures.

If you do something like this again, I'd recommend my favorite finish. 1/3 linseed/tung oil, 1/3 poly (glossiness of your choice), and 1/3 solvent. Mix in a jar and wipe on. You get the look of oil, and some of the durability of poly without the coated-in-plastic poly look.

Ok so im not good at using for 4 chan because this is my first post. If i sound retarted please bare with me. I have a hole in my fiberglass tub and all the videos and tutorials on youtube are not helpful whats so ever i wanted to know a cheap and easy solution to fixing my tub thanks and have a nice day

Where in the tub is the hole?
How big is the hole?

In the outside skirt? Easy fix.
On the top deck? Easy fix.
On the upper wall surround? Easy fix.
In the bathing well? It's fucked.

And fixing tubs is neither "Cheap" nor "Easy", expect to spend at least $25USD and have an entire day spackling in new Resin and sanding and polishing the tub.

Need more info, man, I'm not psychic.

Anyone know how to make a petrol KAWEE lighter work again? I changed the flint, filled it up, fixed the leaky fuel cap, changed the fuse but even after filling it up to the max the wick only burns for like 30 seconds and actually burns off instead of draining and burning the lighter fluid.

sounds like you got crap/fake wick material, or the stuffing has gone hard and needs to be fluffed out.
>>
I checked the stuffing and it seems usable, also you can't fluff it out from the small, 5-6 mm opening of the fuel tank. How do you fix the wick of one such lighter? It's very weird.

Is it easy to change a euro cylinder lock? I've looked at a few videos and it looks simple enough so I think I'll attempt it.

Also, how can I tell if my lock is a euro cylinder lock?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>963231
Euro cylinders are held in by like one screw right? They are meant to be stupid easy to change.

Are you in euroland? Then you might have one.
>>
>>963231
>is it easy
depends on you
>how to tell
if it has the same shape and size and not inside a handle knob or anything
>>
The screw that is holding the cylinder in is really tight and I can't loosen it. So I tried snapping the cylinder lock like it shows in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lzX5sSTbig but the cylinder isn't breaking? What am I doing wrong? Is there a technique I am supposed to do?

I've got a 12 volt LED Floodlight ive had on my 4x4, have since taken it off - what do i need to install it to a 240v circuit. ie have it on a switch shining on my backyard.

>>
>>963219
You need a step down transformer/DC converter. You could probably find a laptop/bombox/battery charger power box from old electronic equipmentand rig it up, but why? You can purchase LED floods with all that built(with motion sensor!) in for like $40. Also, you need a surface mounted junction box if there isn't one there, and make sure to seal the space between it and the house with some silicone or weather stripping.
>>
Connect it to a 240V->12V transformer. And add a switch to turn it on and off.
>>
>>963223
Dont really need one with a motion sensor on it. Already have this one just laying around thought i may as well use it.

Which is the best of the MEMS motion sensors? It's hard to find much info comparing various sensor performance. Invensense mpu-6050 seems to be the most popular 6 axis while fairchild seem to have the newest product.

Anyone know how invensense, ST, bosch and fairchild sensors compare in performance and software stacks?

Also I have seen some drones with multiple IMUs, is there a way to use multiple IMUs to somehow increase resolution and accuracy?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Are you planning to roll your own sensor fusion? Noise is way more dependent on vibration in my experience
>>
>>963186
Invensense 9250 is considered the best. The 6050 is their previous generation, has similar specs, but lacks a magnetometer. You'll find either in high end drones.
>>
>>963198
Noise-sensitive applications sample the sensor data at 4kHz or 8kHz, and filter it. It's not a lot of data, an M3 or M4 micro-controller can easily handle the filtering.

so. I have an old laptop that I don't use anymore. Plugged half the memory into my daughter's second-hand, first computer....figured it's useless to me now, but still runs linux distros with great ease, so idea!

Project time:
I want to turn this laptop into a home-made tablet. Because reasons.

What do I need to give touch-screen capability? Are there mod cases on the market to stuff components into new form factors, or will i need to design a case on my own?

Need tips, hints, and advice. Cost is not an issue, because this is for fun and experience. I would rather put $600 into this project than buy a new iPad, for example.

>mods
Yes, there are.
>out-of-the-box touchscreens ready to use
No, there aren't.

You've got two viable options.
Option 1. Apply a touchscreen kit to the front of your existing display.
Manufacturers exist that offer these sorts of solution. One I've seen used in the industry is called EloTouch. They apply a glass plate to a monitor and provide you with a Serial (RS-232)/USB controller that you plug into your PC. With some clever hacking you can hide this in the bezel. It's kind of a big device (4u) though.

Option 2: Get a USB Touch Monitor and replace your actual monitor with it. One (and the only) example of this is the Lenovo LT1423p. It's a 13.3" 1600x900 touch monitor, which connects over USB 3.0, running proprietary drivers written by DisplayLink.

The last option, which is unviable for basically everyone, is to replace your laptop display with an iPad display. People have designed boards to interface these things to LVDS or what-have-you. The only problem is that no one has a clue how to control the touch sensor.
>>
some good info to start with, thanks. I will look into those items!

I've also seen things like "digitizers" and glass panels, but have never really seen those things explained.

http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=&SearchText=touchscreen

could I use these to make a workaround?
>>
A digitizer is the 'glass' part on the front of a touchscreen. They are essentially the same technology as a laptop touchpad, just a lot thinner and transparent - If you have a broken cellphone, you can usually separate the digitizer from the lcd unless that's what's broken. Looking closely you can sometimes identify the controller chip - the Xperia z1 compact for example uses a synaptics controller, which im hoping to decipher and feed to an arduino for giggles (ordered the wrong part last time I dropped it, oops! Might as well learn something from it!). So a tablet digitizer *if* it can be made serial/ps2/usb readable would probably work for you.

It's impossible to see what gear I'm in while driving. I thought itd be fun to set something up where an led lights up depending on what gear im in. What's the simplest way to do this?

>>963097
Its a fucking automatic. You put it in D and don't fuck with it. The only time you need higher gears if you are driving up a steep hill or towing something. If you somehow are so retarded that you can't remember what lower gear you put the vehicle in 15 seconds after you started climbing a hill you should get yourself checked out for dementia or something. If you are talking moving it into neutral, reverse and back to drive you just count the gears as you move it up and down the shifter. Its not rocket science dude.

What is the world coming to when a fucking automatic is too complex for some people. You better hope Apple comes out with that car soon so you wont have to bother with that second pedal anymore.
