So for the project im currently working on im trying to figure out a way to power some LED strip lights via battery power or solar instead of using an outlet like its designed for. I wanna use these strip lights in a spot without outlet access.
I know jack-shit about electrical's btw
Pic attached is basically same thing i plan on purchasing. In total im hoping to run 15 ft of these lights (3-5ft sections) I might compromise to just a 4ft section instead tho if 15ft uses too much energy or wtv
The guy at the hardware store said i might be able to bypass the regulator.. i guess like cut the wires and hook them up directly to a battery? The lights i looked at are 12V and so i guess i could get a 12V battery? it cant be that simple can it
solar would be great if it wasnt too expensive (<80$ all in) not including the lights
I know i could probably research this kinda thing but its all really foreign to me so can you just help me, please?
>>1006741
Bypass what regulator? Just plug the fucking 12v battery into the dc jack at the controller box. And for solar: Buy a regulator for charging the battery (12 bucks on ebay) and charge the battery with the solarpanel and power the stripe by battery.
>>1006749
where do you think i could find one locally/ can you send me a link?

We don't google shit for people here.
Kind of a tech issue, but it would probably be better in here since I am going to do something myself...
Have a galaxy s3 that just had the power button die. I removed it, hoping to be able to replace it, but my attempts were futile....nothing wanted to go right.
I will try some conductive glue, when it eventually gets here. I might try to make some if I can pick up some ingredients.
In the mean time, I can still get it to turn on with the power cord (and use the home button to wake/shut the screen off), but for some reason it has been getting really warm and hemorrhaging battery. It says the screen has been using the most power, but that makes no sense since the screen is otherwise off.
I'm assuming removing the power button somehow messed it up? Any ideas?
You have probably short circuited it. Buy a new phone.
Unless you are really really really super human good at soldering like CNC robot arm reflow Japanese trained from the tender age of 2 to solder I doubt you can just go in to a smartphone with an iron.
You fucked it up guaranteed.

>for some reason it has been getting really warm and hemorrhaging battery
Definitely a short circuit, you fucked up, dump it before it starts a fire when you least expect it and kill your entire family
Hello guys, two days agomy turtle beach stealth 500P headphones broke.
I just took them from my stand, and they broke in my hands while i was putting them on my head.
Less than 1 year, never fell, always on the stand or in the box. So i sent an email to them. They still not gave me an answer.
Since i bet that they will not do anything, and say that it is my fault, i ask you, guys, if anyone of you knows where i can get spare parts for my headphones. On their site there is only microphone, the usb pen, or the protection for the ears.
Thanks in advance for any help

Here's an idea, since you seem to be struggling with this.
If you are having problem with a product (in this case, a weakness that constantly breaks in multiple models) stop buying the same brand over and over!
In fact i'm not buying again a turtle beach product: first because they broke without taking hits, then, because there is no support.
I just wanted to find spare parts to replace the broken slider, so i could keep using these headphones. You know, that piece in particular could cost few bucks, instead of a new pair of headphones that should cost around 100.
Thanks for your time, anyway

How fat is your head ?
Sup /diy/ because the internet is full of conflicting information I need some advice on the best sealers for wood under a few different circstances.
1) pine shelf in the kitchen, will have the kettle and microwave under it so steam will be an issue
2) putting a jarrah fence in the backyard. I've never bothered to put sealer on a fence before but the internet recommens it. Is it worth doing?
3) pine planter boxes, wasn't going to but again the internet recommends it
What's your advice /diy/ and is there a is there a good reference site for this type of thing?
>>1006411
2 pack polyurethane is about as tough as it gets and will protect pine very well.
For the Jarrah, its pretty damn tough to begin with against bugs and rot- so its a bit of a much-a-much if you think its worth it. I reckon decking oil could be ok if you're after something decorative but with fences that's a lot of work.
>>1006413
Thanks mate, what are some good wood work websites that cover all the basic stuff?
>>1006994

You could have just done some basic googling.
I bought 100 of some 400V diodes for $10 to experiment with audio applications, but it turns out the forward voltage is way too high. Should I buy 100 of 400V 1µF electrolytic caps and make a Cockroft Walton generator? Will this work with 240VAC mains?
>>1006319
>Should I buy 100 of 400V 1µF electrolytic caps and make a Cockroft Walton generator?
Sure, why not?
Will this work with 240VAC mains?
As a guy who has made several Cockroft Walton multipliers I can tell you it will work, however those multipliers tend to fail quite often, specially if the diodes cant withstand high peak currents caused by the capacitor discharges, I usually tend to go towards higher frequencies and lower capacitance to avoid that.
>>1006337
I forgot to mention, there's a point when adding more caps doesn't increases the voltage anymore. Capacitors are like walls with membranes, you can shout at one side of the membrane and be heard at the other, but when you start adding more and more the energy is lost between the membranes.
100 capacitors is probably an excessive amount, I wouldn't use more than 50.
Here's a guy that made it with 100 capacitors anyway.

I'd make a full wave multiplier, but I don't know what sort of driver to use. Will this run on DC?
Despite a lot of /diy/nasaurs shitting on me for wanting what project I can do with shipping pallets, I have this. I love how it turned out and I am pretty confident that if I wanted to, I could sell it for a decent profit. Maybe.
ANYWAY What have you made recently, /diy/? Share your projects and stories.

OP here, I meant "Despite a lot of /diy/nasaurs shitting on me for wanting to do a project with shipping pallets..."
Not sure what happened there.

Hello /diy/
I'm planning on making a wooden bow, but I don't really know where to start.
Can anyone give me some advice about it?
It doesn't have to be like the one in the pic, I just picked that quite randomly.
>what kind of wood can you provide yourself?
Common hazel in a large ammount, but the woods behind my dad's home have a lot of different types of trees, sadly I don't know what they are
>what kind of tools do you have?
Basically I don't have any tools at my place, but I can find them at my dad's or some friends of mine
Thank for your time to help someone who want to start making stuff
Not really my thing, but when I was learning to steam bend timber this place was relatively good

I understand that from a efficiency standpoint, a plain ol' diesel generator will be much better than a turboshaft for electricity generation.
However, just for the novelty of having one, I'd like to build one on the long term.
What kind of tools would I need to make the blades and such? I'm assuming they need to be cast or milled for strength, and there's a limited variety of materials you can use, at least for the combustion section.
You can make one from an old car turbo. The fans are incredibly hard to make even for people with the proper tools. The balance needs to be perfect so it doesn't vibrate itself apart at 15000 rpm.
>>1002120
>I understand that from a efficiency standpoint, a plain ol' diesel generator will be much better than a turboshaft for electricity generation.
A /diy/ turboshaft, yeah probably. But more generally-speaking, nah. Aircraft turboshafts/turboprops are fairly inefficient since they prioritize power-to-weight and reliability over raw efficiency, but marine turboshafts and those gas turbines used in power stations can beat out pretty much all "plain ol' diesels," with only those gargantuan 2-stroke marine turbodiesels surpassing them.
But anyways.
>What kind of tools would I need to make the blades and such?
How "right" do you want to do it? If you don't really give a fuck about performance or longevity, you can actually get away with pretty lean methods using very basic tools and materials. For example, Kurt Shreckling designed and built an outrageously-/diy/able, working centrifugal turbine engine (pic related), featuring a turbine blisk that's cut, bent and dremel-ground from a scrap of sheet-steel, and a compressor made from fucking plywood:
https://www.scribd.com/doc/3746230/Gasturbine-Engines-for-Model-Aircraft
If you want to follow the "homebuilt turbine engine" cliche, you could repurpose a turbocharger fairly easily as well, and probably achieve better performance than the Schreckling design (just as long as weight isn't a factor, that is) by running higher pressures and temps
Both of these options would require you to somehow integrate your own PTO to the shaft, or better yet you could build a separate multi-stage power-recovery turbine driven by the core exhaust as most turboshafts are.
If you're looking for more conventional manufacturing methods, see here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOv2pGEruGk
Of course, modern engines often use blisks instead. Perhaps you could 3D-print a blisk pattern and cast that. Also you may not have the resources to cast nickel superalloys at 3000*, so watch your ITT/fuel flow if you use steel or whatever.
>>1002213
thanks for the links
I could probably get into casting them, since 3d printers are pretty cheap nowadays, I'd just have to make sure to balance it properly which would be hard.
To start with, I think a automotive turbo would be the best to start with just so I don't have to fuck around with casting or welding shit too much.
So i wear 50mm goggles at work because they seal better around the eyes and i can wear my headphone earmuff things i made without painn in the ear, anyways i need a way to cut out lenses from sheets of plexi i have, any ideas?
>>1001313
are you trying to make safety goggles? because plexi wont do shit to protect you.
just get some real safety glasses; best not to improvise on something that will keep you from going blind.
That style goggle is such utter shit that it should no longer be sold. Get some plain clear safety glasses with a conforming frame AND a clear face shield. Goggles don't protect your face.
Workplace is supposed to provide PPE, but I've done it myself to get comfy.
Ask on welding forums what people are using, they have to have effective eye protection they can see through clearly.
>>1001313
>So i wear 50mm goggles at work because they seal better around the eyes and i can wear my headphone earmuff things i made without painn in the ear, anyways i need a way to cut out lenses from sheets of plexi i have, any ideas?
Plexiglass (acrylic) is totally wrong for safety goggles, because it shatters when it fails.
,,,,,
If you INSIST on making your own safety goggles, then what you want to use is polycarbonate (Lexan). Get a sheet about 3/32"" thick, and then you can cut lenses out of it using tin snips,,,,, because it is tough and flexible when bent, it won't shatter like Plexiglass does.
>>1001327
>That style goggle is such utter shit that it should no longer be sold.
Some people prefer them. *I* don't, but others do.
>Goggles don't protect your face.
This is true, but it depends on what is practical to wear in a given situation.
>Workplace is supposed to provide PPE, ...
Another thought I had was that if you are required to wear safety glasses for a job, then you're probably supposed to be using "real" ones with a safety rating--not home-made ones.
But anyway.
sup /diy/
I'm a degenerate who's doing a deep clean of my room. What tips do you guys have to eliminate odors and purify the air?
Get a bucket of activated charcoal and toss it inside. Make sure to close the door real fast too
Buy the powder shit you dump on the floor then vacuum up and wipe down the walls
>>999065
get rid of your cum box
I need a way to bring a 9000 liter of water about 200 meters from the water source with a very low budget.
Buckets are banned.
5l bucket - >1800 travels->60 hours of work.
Buy pipe is over budget.
>>994783
Hire a pump and hose?
Get a garden hose and your mum. She'll finish in 10 minutes.
>>994783
Giant garbage cans filled with water.
Is the wooden platform sturdy enough? Is there a better way to do this? other than buying metal shelving at $70 a piece and at a smaller size. Plastic is $30 and the casters would be $5-6 each? I will be putting mostly light stuff on them eg. cleaning liquids, assortment of nuts and bolts, etc. All of this on a flat smooth surface of course.
>>1006394
I'll arrange them like this
And the youtube video shown, no longer exists. On Instructables, there isn't any feedback or updates.
I get the feeling it's going to sway. I'd do the metal wire shelving but I tend to move a lot and plastics are easier pack up.
>>1006396
$70 and upwards
how do i made one of these
>>1006366
How, why and does it work like you intended?
Buy a diaper that uses gel, soak in water, extract gel, place in ziploc freezer bag, freeze, done. An it wont leak.
>>1006366
Its just silica gel in a bag really
Hi /diy/kes. I am out of school for the summer and I wanted to know if I can make a sailing boat out of materials at my dads junk yard. He is lett8ng me have a 25foot shipping container and all the pallets I want. I am worried about heat tho so how can I make a fit air conditioner for the cabin.
A thread died for this.
obviously a triangle filtered fan what the fuck is this thread
make a submarine babby
you could probably float a shipping container if you really tried
