Hello /diy/ not sure if this is the right board for this but since asbestos might be related to DIY projects I am posting here.
Has anybody her dealt with asbestos in a project or even in their job?
I am asking because I have been working as an apprentice plumber for the past 1.5 years and recently I worked in condo unit built in the 60's. It definitely has asbestos ducts. And it has that old popcorn ceiling stuff.
Before I worked there the owner had somebody remove ALL the popcorn ceiling on the first floor of the unit.
I am 99% sure she did not use an asbestos abatement contractor. More than likely the person she hired just treated it as any typical non-asbestos related job and did not do a proper removal.
Could I be walking into an asbestos infested pit every time I walk into the unit?
And what are the hazards related to asbestos when working as a plumber? Am I likely to die before 70 because of this job?
Reading about mesothelioma has me honestly re-considering this career.
Yes Asbestos is bad. But it has to be consistent and fairly heavy exposure to fuck you up.
Popcorn ceilings have fuck all asbestos in them. Even if someone just yolo ripped it all out it wouldn't really be that bad once it has aired out and vacuumed and had sheets and shit changed.
As a plumber the worst thing you would have to worry about is asbestos pipe lagging which is nasty as fuck, but is really easy to identify and tell your employer to get fucked until they get rid of it. Same with anything else you suspect to be asbestos, just tell them to get fucked until it is tested. Health and safety morons are the worst kind of people but they will 100% back you up.

Here we go... again. Don't tell me, it's also metric asbestos that runs on superior 220v, 50hz electricity?
Seriously, the replies you're going to get here will be 180° apart. Flip a coin, anon. It's about if there are airborne particles, my opinion is your probably fine, but watch your back.
Solid asbestos isn't harmful, only dust particles that wreak havoc on your lungs. Wear a respirator if you're so damn worried.
I recently ordered a guitar with a maple neck that will be arriving soon. I wanted to achieve a "roasted" effect without actually heat-curing the wood, which would require removing frets and everything.
If I wanted to achieve a similar effect by staining the neck, what I would I have to do as far as preparation beforehand? Would I need to do any sanding assuming that the neck doesn't have a glossy finish? And would a stain discolor mother of pear inlays?
Staining the neck would require removing the frets and would discolor the inlays. You're SOL. There's a reason people who know what they're doing stain/burn the neck BEFORE putting this shit into it.
>>1007898
not to mention it will come with a sealed finish already
>>1007621
If you must do this (and I would strongly urge you to not do this) then I suggest you buy a beater guitar to practice on first, or just buy a cheap maple neck from Ebay and ruin that before you move onto killing the resale value of your new guitar.
I can't go without mentioning once more what a terrible idea I think this is and what an ass you will feel after you destroy your new guitar.
Any idea how to fix this so I don't damage my headset
Hot glue

It's already damaged.
How to check what is taking electricity in my house?
Last months electricity bill showed that I used 1300 kWh in my apartment.
I have a fridge that is medium sized, a small boiler that takes 1.5kW and also a computer and electric oven.
If I calculate say my boiler's usage, I would guess that it probably works 6 hours a day in the worst case scenario. That would be 9kWh per day and 270 per month. The fridge is a bit old and has no energy markings on it expect that it is "class A". But I imagine it should take less than the boiler.
Other appliances get turned on rarely, only in case of need.
So my question is, would anyone have an idea how to prove how much I am actually using. Because according to my knowledge I should not be spending that much kWh a month. My bills are ridiculous for such a small apartment.
>>1007493
Are you sure no one is stealing your electricity?
Take a look around, I've seen this happening before.
>>1007494
Will look again over all the cables but so far it does not seem like that. But are there devices in existence that I could use to prove how much I use my self actually? Like putting some device in middle of boiler and socket to see how much it takes.
>>1007495
I think you mean one of these things, right?

In a fit of edgelord rebellion against my divorcing parents I took a pair of scissors and inscribed the word "FUCK" on the wall, and now that I've come to my senses, I need to know how to fix the wall before they find out.
>>1007429
Go to a big box store, get some fast dry spackling compound and a plastic drywall knife. Scrape the spackle over the indents, let dry, paint. Could be done in an hour, probably two.
>>1007429
Carve "fuck" repeatedly across all walls and when they seem upset just say that's just the pattern of the wallpaper and it has always been that way. Also hang two nooses in their closet so they know that they've been successful parents.

though next time, it would be much manlier to play the punch-the-wall-and-see-if-you-can-hit-a-stud game
What's the cheapest/most efficient way to distill water? I don't really want to go out and buy a distillation flask or professional condensor, what can I rig up instead?
Reason: city water is shit, kinda like that Michigan scandal, want to make it drinkable water.
Brita filter
>put heavy glass in middle of bucket/bowl
>fill bucket/bowl with water around outside of glass
>cover it with saran wrap
>put a weight in middle of saran wrap
>place in the sun
>wait
>>1006874
Is the saran wrap covering both the glass and bowl? And the sun would give enough heat? Would it be worth it to line the bowl with something reflective like tin foil/find a bowl that's reflective inside?
Shit thread.
Sup /diy/.
Does anyone have any experience with eink display drivers? Can you run them from USB, VGA or HDMI? I want to make a secondary reading display for my laptop.
http://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bns-solutions/e-ink-quick-start-kit?WT.z_Tab_Cat=New%2520Products
Can you plug any display matrix in this controller?
https://www.visionect.com/product/development-kit-with-133-e-ink-display/2
Prob more what you need - at $2k for the 13.3" Dev Kit linked, or 5k for a 32", slightly more expensive than the $70 for your original. But $70 is not cheap if it dont work either, it looks like a 4 y.o. limited segment controller only - doubt will do what you want.
Someone who knows this stuff maybe have better idea tho, I dont.
>>1006457
Thanks.
Could you maybe wire up the board directly to the VGA pins and drive it from a laptop with a software solution?
>>1006457
Presumably the cost is in the embedded board + support + software license.
$2000 or $5000 for a display, even if it were 80% of the cost, would be excessive and pretty much guarantee that no one will ever do a volume order.
What am I doing wrong?
This tool keeps kicking my ass despite practice and watching tons of youtube tutorials. Thanks to all the catches I got I fear putting the tool to the wood.
>>1008978
Note the height on the tool rest in the videos your watching for learning. It may be your issue.
>>1008978
Nobody know what you are doing wrong, we just know you are doing it wrong
>>1008979
I've experimented with the tool rest incessantly. I really think I'm too peabrained to learn how to use the skew chisel without hands-on training.
All the other lathe tools I handle just fine though.
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I recently bought a loft with high ceilings and a sloping roof. There is a sprinkler system attached to the roof with a central spine at the highest elevation and three 'legs' that extend both sides of the slope. Along each 'leg' there are three power outlets controlled by a switch panel. By neighbors hang lights and I was looking to do the same.
I was able to hang pendants at the lowest elevation (14.5') but cannot hang anything higher due to height. I was looking to hang string lights along the central spine and each leg but the pipe is 25' at highest elevation.
Any ideas of how I can reach the highest elevation? One of my neighbors rented a scissor lift but that is out of the question due to the tight bend in my external hallway (I tried...).
Help appreciated.
I've been working on a solution to this very problem. Details are hush hush at this point but until I have it patented I can only release a sketch. I can also tell you the key to it's functionality is pallet wood and a strong shipping container base
>>1008606
Rent a smaller lift, extension ladder?
Hell maybe even one of those telescoping light bulb changers?
Hi there,
I got this fucking hole in my wall that i have to fix for my landlord.
I don't know the materials or what's that kind of walls are called so i can't search on the internet. If any of you guys know, i'll be glad to learn.
Sorry if this is not the right board
Learn to google drywall repair.
And you're not going to match that texture (wallpaper?) anyhow. Is this now our weekly /diy/ I fucked up my landlord's property thread or is it just graduation time and every frat idiot is moving out? Geez
I said i didn't know how this was called, but thanks for your response.
Next time, try trigger discipline
I just moved into a new apartment and there's this black stuff on the walls.
Looks like there was a fire here or something.
It's everywhere.
I tried to clean it with soap and water, it barely did anything.
Then I tried mr clean magic eraser and it scrubbed the paint right of the wall.
What do I use to get this shit off?
Thanks.
Pics incoming

Most people would use paint
Hey /diy/ i have a garden but since i live in southern California i need to conserve water and I end up loosing a lot of water to evaporation. I was thinking of setting up a pergola with wide spaced rafters over the garden to reduce sun exposure allowing the soil to retain more water. Can anyone attest to how well this would work and how it would affect the more sun hungry plants such as my citrus?
>>1008168
Maybe you should just plant plants that are native to your area so you dont have to worry about it?
>>1008168
post pic of the garden OP
>>1008168
Wait...are you putting anything on top of the rafters? or just leaving it open?
So I am about to build a router fence but I don't understand it completely. Can someone please tell me what is the purpose of the slots that pic related it telling me to cut into the face and the sub face?
I understand the slot on the side of the base is to attach clamps, but I don't see the point of the other slots so I am guessing I don't completely understand the power of the router fence.
Thanks.
>>1007741
So you can slide the face along the sub face thus being able to make it longer or shorter ?
>>1007741
The face boards can move left and right to compensate for the size of router bits. You dont want a large gap between your face and your bit
Ahh I got it. Thanks.
This place I'm looking at has these odd jacks next to every since outlet. I think they're for phone lines. Should I replace the whole gang or just clean it up and leave it? I'd have to patch a new drywall at every box.. The place was built in the early 70s and it's interesting then you could literally plug your phone in anywhere in the house.
>>1006550
Others have been painted over like shit
Id use the existing wires to pull Cat5e and wire the whole place up. Essentially that's what they did just circa mid century. .
>>1006550
never seen 3 gang lengthwise covers like that
but yeah, see if you can pull some ethernet cable if you need it. attic access would help with that too.
