Does anyone generate an income by making things? I'm not talking about plumbers/electricians/contractors/HVAC/whatever.

What do you make? How profitable is it? Is there a market in your area for it?

I don't make a living off of it, but when I need extra cash I take commissions, usually cosplay related items. people in that client-base will pay a lot of money if your work looks good.

spend about $25 on this project and most of that was for paint. this one I didn't sell, it was for my sister who wanted to be Marceline on Halloween. but she took it to a party and a few people there offered her $150 for it.

sorry for the picture quality, it is a picture of a picture.

I also built a 4-foot fan for a friend's Temari cosplay, I did not sell this one either but many people at the convention offered her $200 for it.

the market is nice because if you are willing to meet the customer's (sometimes very specific) demands then you can pretty much charge whatever you want for the piece. many times the piece doesn't have to be functional, just lightweight and look nice. which makes your job easier. I have had a few requests for functional pieces like guns with moving parts and things like that.

the downside is (at least with the tools I have access to) it is very time consuming. each piece is unique and therefore takes a lot of planning and sometimes trial and error. I had limited materials when I built the fan so I built a smaller 2-foot prototype and that cost me an extra day, it did make the actual build go smooth and fast though.

If you were to build things like this and try to make a living you would likely have to find several customers that want the same thing so you could mass produce them and get a lump sum of money. just my thoughts on it.

Hey /diy/ I used pic related to program mcu's, I wanted to try arduino so I want to burn the bootloader on an atmega832p, but I always get the error avrdude: usbdev_open(): did not find any USB device "usb".
Google says it's a driver issue but this can't be becaus when I reverse the connector I get an error that the connection on mosi and rst failed.
Pls help me :(

The vast majority of atmel USB programmers basically don't get recognized by windows 10. Legit and fakes.

I can program the mcu's int atmel studio just fine, but I can't burn the bootloader. Since in can read out that the connector is reversed I don't think it's a driver issue.

Trying to make a piezo screamer with a transducer from an old alarm system and a dual voltage power supply.

Thought it would be as simple as pic related, using a 3.3V square wave to switch two MOSFETs to drive the piezo at 20V. LTSpice suggests I'm doing this wrong though, as the waveform across the capacitor (piezo) comes out as centered around 9V and has a swing of about 1V.
Am I using the MOSFETs wrong or is 3.3V just not enough to drive the gates?

Hint: MOSFET turnon is determined by the gate-to-source voltage (V_GS).
>>
>>1045112
Yeah amoung other things, 3.3V probably not enough to drive the standard model MOSFET you are using for your simulation. That being said, you can easily get MOSFETs that can be driven off 3.3V though they tend to have relatively high on resistance (~100ohms) but that shouldn't be a problem for driving a piezo. Also your M2 low side MOSFET is the wrong way around, you need source always negative side, drain always positive otherwise in most real MOFETs which have an integral anti parallel diode it'll just short circuit or if it's a special one that doesn't, its performance will be sub par. You'd also likely get better results using a proper H-bridge and doing proper differential drive instead of the fuckery u got going on here.

I feel like these are very easy to reverse engineer if I can get an idea of what LED diode they use.

If you google search the terms I used in the subject the same battery powered set of lights come up, theres barely any difference in the item listed by different vendors.

I'm positive its just copper wire, LEDs, solder, a 3-5v battery pack and clear heat-shrink tubing to keep everything all tight and neat together.

I'm not a total newb to soldering, but its not like I tinker with a breadboard and know much about electronics either. I think this would be a weekend project I could do, unless /diy wants to drop some facts on me that suggest otherwise

Ok, I'll explain why you have no replies, since no one else will.

You're asking the equivalent of 'well I guess I just need heat and food to cook, right?'

Google can easily tell you how to power a few LEDs in series, you figure out how you want to wire them. Yes, it's just wire soldered to LEDs. yes, there are children under 8 with the knowledge you seek. Yes, you can do it. You won't really be able to do it cheaper than Chinese suppliers can, though. But, you can make custom lengths and shit.
>>
>>1044998
>I feel like these are very easy to reverse engineer if I can get an idea of what LED diode they use.
It's probably just a SMD LED with wires soldered directly onto it, and then put some epoxy or something similar over it...

I would suggest you try soldering some thin wires on some "1206"-size LEDs. The number [1206] designates a particular size of two-lead SMD component. There is LEDs, diodes, resistors and capacitors in this size so don't just buy whatever says "1206".

1206 may be bigger than what they use, but it is about the smallest size a newbie could easily get wires stuck onto using a cheap soldering iron.

Other suggestions: a fine-tip soldering iron, a flux pen or liquid flux, some [metal!] reverse tweezers (not the plastic ESD ones for electronics).

The next size down is 0805. You might be able to do them with some practice.

The next size further down is 0603. Good luck with that.
(On the China clone Arduino boards I have around, the onboard LEDs look like they are 0603's)

TRIGGERD

hello DIY, im looking for some advice

i want to buy a drill press, since ill be starting soon to work on some metalworking projects and some accesories for my bike, and when i was looking at the shop, they offer a 13mm one and 16mm, so my question is

wich one should i get? 13 or 16mm?

tl;dr: wich drill press should i get?

reduced-shank drills will fit in a 13mm chuck, so there's no great benefit in buying the 16mm model UNLESS it's more powerful, slower-turning or has a morse taper spindle instead of a jacobs taper.

anything that can go less than 150rpm and has MT2 or MT3 spindle will be a damn fine metalworking drill.

>anything that can go less than 150rpm and has MT2 or MT3 spindle will be a damn fine metalworking drill.
Well, not anything. A lot of the cheaper drill presses out there can flex quite a bit. Make sure it's not a bottom of the barrel piece of shit before you buy it.

The drill press to get depends on what you'll be doing.

What is the spindle-column distance? This determines how far from an edge you can drill.

What is the minimum RPM and motor power? This determines what size holes you can make in various materials. As the other anon mentioned, the chuck capacity itself doesn't matter much at that size.

What is the spindle travel? This determines how deep a hole you can drill.

What is the table height range? This determines how thick an object you can drill.

Alternately, post the most challenging thing you expect to be drilling, and we can tell you the specs to look for. For example, I wanted to make big holes in 300 stainless (one of the most difficult common materials to drill), so I got a 140RPM Morse-taper drill with a 9A motor. It is a damn fine metalworking drill, and it's overkill for most things. Depending on what you want to do, maybe both drill presses would work, or maybe neither are capable enough.

if you dont want fine texture (i made stuff with wool) you can make a cheap one with pic related.

one short side gets a row of holes
the other side gets the same amount of holes as a zigzagged line
bam, loom is ready. you can put string around every second string in the loom and tie them to a stick to make things easier.
>>

I made a floor loom for my boyfriend based off of various photos he picked out from the net.

It was not hard at all to build, and I made it all shooting from the hip without any blueprints.

The beater bar was a bit of a bitch to make, but I overenginered it so that it would last.

Hi dyi,

I wanted to install a 'fake' care alarm led in my car that flashes ONLY when the key isn't in the Ignition (when engine is off). The few mods ive seen have the LED flashing all the time. The LED is already in the car, I just took out rest of the alarm, so thats part is done.

Any idea on how to do the rest?

I'd probably rig it off something like the stereo ignition wire so when you do put the key in and the stereo turns on it closes the circuit to the LED
Obviously it would have to be battery powered
>>
>>1044899

you will need a 2 pole relay. one with contacts normally open and normally closed.

the purpose of this is when the relay is off the contacts are closed in one position, when the relay is engaged the contacts close in the opposite position

to power the relay hook it to an accessory power lead so when you turn the key on it has power (like your radio does) and then it can deactivate the led. then when you turn the key off, it will open those contacts and close the other which you can wire to a direct lead to the battery to power the led when the key is off

id draw up a sinple diagram for this but I am not your personal research anon.
>>
>>1044908

OP wants the LED to be OFF when the key is on.. and flashing when the key is OFF. I already told OP what he needs to do this

Hey /diy/ in the next year I want to set up my own place for live music. I'm 100% green on the idea so treat me like a retarded child. From what I've gathered I can use a light board to light up the place and can lights connected and if I want to get real fancy I can buy mechanical lights. What I really have no clue on what to do is adding sound to a stage. Do I need a mixer/sound board? Or just use plug in amps and connect them togther somehow? I'm fixing on visiting a few stages and places to see how others have done it but I havent gotten that far.

TL;DR: How do I set up live sound for a music stage.

>>

Simply put: stage with sound consists of (at minimum)

1. Audio source (mics, instruments, cd player)
2. Mixer
3. Amp
4. Speakers (amount depending on budget. At least 2)

2 and 3 can be built into one unit, but you should go for a proper standalone mixing table.

Recommended: monitor speakers. Playing on stage is horrible if you can't hear yourself.

Another thing worth investing in is a so-called Multi-cable. Instead of running 20 cables back and forth between stage and mixer (because the mixer should be positioned so that the operator hears what the audience is hearing), you get one thick cable that contains many audio cables with connector for each line in both ends.

Source: former audio engineer, handling mostly live performances.

whats your budget?
tell you then what you can (or cant) buy. Actually, most venues (in Europe anyway), band would be bringing / using their own shit, so you wouldnt really need anything, apart from 4 walls and a roof and a really basic house setup. And a license, and a friendly fire inspector, and bar staf that dont rob you blind (ha ;) and door staff that dont torture/kill peole for fun, and bookers/promoters who know wtf they are doing, etc.

>so treat me like a retarded child
sure thing. Im kind of missing why you _want_ to do this here, because, it certainly doesn't seem to be experience-based. You'd be easier (and cheaper (and less liable to land before banrupotcy/general court, etc) renting a venue for a night and putting on your own bill there. Thats called being a promoter.
