Hey /diy/, i am doing science studies but now i'd rather do woodworking or metalworking
What should i do ? Does woodworking/metalworking has a bright future?
I feel like id be happier as à furniture maker or something similar

>Dropping out for a trade
>at the age of 50 with a destroyed body thinking back where it went wrong.
Finish your study, switch afterwards.
>>1046517
I quit media study for woodworking. The school teaches me furniture and whatnot, which is true what you concerning the body. But now Im interring at a harpsichord builder for the second time which is the fuking best.
So learn a trade then develop a craft. Or design furniture and try to sell it
>>1046438
Why not both? You can become an engeneer and find well paid job to secure finaces. You can woodwork in your free time and slowly trasition to become a full time woodworker if you feel like it. IMO studies are better choice long term unless you already have fully equiped workshop, skills, knowledge of your local market and generally expiriece in woodworking as source of income.

>at the age of 50 with a destroyed body thinking back where it went wrong
I know 2 woodworkers that are past time of retirement and are OK healthwise. You won't destroy your body if you work safe - never pick up heavy thing with your back, use ear protection whe working with loud machines, use masks to cover yourself from harmful fumes/wood dust, etc.
IMO woodworking is healthier that any kind of deskjob, because you've got more movement during work.
i got bedbugs somehow despite never having someone come into my house let alone my bed. i condisered tossing everything but i wanted to know some diy methods to being rid of these fuckers. ive managed to keep it isolated to one room (other bedroom is vacant) but im getting sick of dealing with it. pic related are what i keep killing.
this has been an issue for about the last 3 weeks if that has any relevance

With clothing, put them in the drier for as long and as hot as the dryer can go. You want the entire drum to be above 140 degrees Fahrenheit. (The hotter, the better.) Although reading up, you might be better visiting your local laundromat and using one of their dryers which should be able to get hot enough.
Unfortunately, bed bugs are one of those nasty fuckers that can live on something for years and a small enough that they can hide cracks. Your best bet is to start looking for exterminators and soon before they spread to other rooms.
>>1046369
Just fucking toss it family. You will never, ever get rid of them competely unless you toss the bed far from your back yard, insulate the room and then gas all the eggs on your floor. Im so sorry for you. Get a metal frame bed so they cant infest as easily. If you need convincing just look up bedbug horror stories.
Hi DIYers, I'm currently building an extruder, and it's output has to be constant, as any speed fluctuations would cause defects to the output.
What I need help with is an idea of motor/gearbox to use for this, I've thought of the motors used in cars for the windows and seats, but those are weak as I tested them and with my hands I was able to slow them down.
Food mixer and food processor motors are also too weak, and a car's starter motor isn't built to work for long periods of time, and would require a transformer that would be a pain in the ass to get/ would be too expensive.
The best idea I've come up with so far is to use the motor of a washing machine, but for that I'd need a good gearbox, as what I need is between 50 to 200 RPM and these motors supply a lot more (1000-1500RPM).
Any ideas of a better electric motor that I can get relatively cheaply or a gearbox to use with the washing machine motor?
Thank you!
>>1046066
>used in cars for the windows and seats
did you try the windshield wiper motors? those have high torque and high gear reduction
>>1046069
Yes, but they also have slower RPM, but their gearbox might be something to look into, thanks
>>1046066
I bought a treadmill for $75.
I don't know what you have access to, but treadmills are ez pezy.
Also, if you find a treadmill with an incline motor that would be high torque I think.
Hey /diy/, I'm just visiting from /k/ with a quick question. I'm going hiking in the morning and I get my hydration bladder out if my closet and it looks like someone cut it. Anyone know of a quick fix that will hold through my hike tomorrow and until I can get a better one?
Uhh, first thing that comes to mind is a bicycle patch kit. I dunno if it would work, but worth a shot, I suppose.
>>1046075
This guy is on to something.
How long is the hike?
Gorilla or Duck Tape might work for a day.
What kind of plastic? Have you tryed melting it back together?
>>1046063
Look for recycling codes on the body. If it says LDPE or HDPE, you're shit out of luck; nothing sticks to polyethylene.
What are some cool DIY youtube channels?
>SV Seeker
The guy is building a massive sailing vessel in his backyard and an underwater ROV in his backyard with help from followers. One of the best youtube channels I've watched.

Is there anything similar to this out there? Something preferably that deals with the electronics side.

>>1046030
Is he reading the Society for Underwater Technology Magazine? I was president of a chapter of that shit lol. Pretty pointless group 2bh, but the main office paid for some nice catering and shit for our meetings.
He has invented the wireless transmission if electricity

I want do go into hydroponics. No, not marihuana - for starters I thought something like salad or spinach would be easy enough.
Thing is though that I can't find any lists of the micronutrients those plants need; but this seems to be something to be written down somewhere.
Can /sci/ help and point me in the right direction?
I-i meant /diy/
growing indoors or outdoors?
If you're growing outdoors you'd be better served growing food in soil...in my experience soil grown food tastes a lot better than hydroponic food
>>1045778
Indoors.
Are you sure this is not imagination? I mean, the plants get more nutrients with hydroponics...
This office building I am working is currently having carpets installed. Instead of rolling the whole carpet in they cut it in small square pieces then glue it in place. Whats the logic behind this? Seems they are wasting a lot of time with this. Does not make sense to me at all
>>1045690
I assume if it gets damaged they always have the option of replacing a square instead of the whole thing but you could always cut in a new piece.
>>1045691
They are called carpet tiles, they come in boxes like that, no one is cutting carpet into squares that I can see. This offers a way to have carpet in heavy foot traffic areas such as offices / shops etc. Since each piece is glued individually, each tile you step onto is just as fixed as the last one, it would be near impossible to move 1 peice of carpet that size and cut it.
Any tips to Make a tattoo machine
>>1045587
Don't.
If you haven't figured out how to make a machine, you'll never keep it clean enough to prevent transmitting diseases to your friends.
Theyre about $3.49 plus postage on Amazon, FFS. Save up your paper round cash and buy one, then, you can scribble away happily on your friends forehead AND you've made a Chinaman happy (his family can eat for a week) - what a time to be alive.
I could tell you how we made them in prison but chances are you can Google a better way and I only feel like typing exactly this much.
How would you go about restoring something like this? Looks like mild surface rust, but I'd be scared to take the paint off. Is it beyond saving?
>>1045568
If it was painted on, which I doubt, you would have to repaint it. If it's a decal, which is the most likely, then you'd have to replace the decal. Either way you will ruin the collector value and probably fuck it up worse than it already is.
>>1045582
Part of the value of old things is looking old.
Looks perfect the way it is.
>>1045582
yep
Does anyone know of a good tool that will work as a calculator, but also do unit conversions?
I'm trying to add two distances shown in fractional feet and inches, then convert to decimal inches.
I've been searching for hours.
Please.
theres a browser app for everything
your standard calculator can do that with the upside down L button so you put in the fraction
it looks like a/b and then theres another button that converts it to decimal
>>1045541
Write the measurement as an improper fraction. So 2 and 3/32 inches would be 67/32. Now divide the top by the bottom. 2.09375. You can do this in a matter of seconds on any standard calculator or cell phone. If you want to do it automatically I'm sure you could find a program for a graphing calculator that would do the same. If you want to kick it old school a slide rule would get you very close also.
Spend 30 minutes with a book on Python and write your own program to do this in 49 seconds
So I just moved into an apartment 3 days ago. So far I have spotted 2 roaches. I came to discover the last tenant was a fucking slob.
I've sprayed every perimeter inside and tomorrow I'm gonna put 6 to 10 traps out. Is there anything else I can do?
It's an above garage apartment so I was gonna ask the landlord to spray down the building as well.
boric acid I think and some of this https://www.amazon.com/Dupont-Advion-Cockroach-Roach-Plunger/dp/B004408EUA
The best possible thing to do is bomb the place
You will never get all of them with just traps. Remove any cardboard boxes you have in the place as well, they like to eat the glue in them and they are perfect hiding places.

>I'm new to electronics, where do I get started?
There are several good books and YouTube channels that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more, many with advanced techniques. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
>What books are there?
Beginner:
Getting Started in Electronics Forrest Mims III
Make: Electronics Charles Platt
How to Diagnose and Fix Everything Electronic Michael Jay Greier
Intermediate:
All New Electronics Self-Teaching Guide: Kybett, Boysen
Practical Electronics for Inventors: Paul Scherz and Simon Monk
Advanced:
The Art of Electronics by Paul Horowitz

>What circuit sim software do you use?
This mostly comes down to personal preference. These are the most common ones though:
NI Multisim
LTSpice
CircuitLab
iCircuit for Macs
>What software should I use to print circuits?
Circuit Wizard
ExpressPCB
EAGLE
I'd add w2aew YouTube's channel to the list, his explanation videos are pretty useful, personally I think his content is best of all the EE YT channels.
I'd also add KiCad to the PCB software list because its completely free and actually legit product that can easily compete with Eagle and such.
>>1045343
>add KiCad to the PCB software list
Long overdue. Also change the wording to "lay out circuit boards".
>>1045343
It's at max characters. We had a padtebin in the paste but it looks like we're back to dumping it in the op.
You could probably remove circuit wizard and replace it with KiCad because I don't know of a single person who actually uses circuit wizard.
I'd have to check out w2aew
What is /diy/s thoughts on this old house
>No niggers on the show
>Teaches people how to do things
>Literally diy
>>1045280
I see very little real teaching on the show. It's more ideas and interest based. Still a good show but not the same as, say, the Woodwright's Shop or something along those lines.
>>1045300
Ask This Old House is more /diy/.
I've watched TOH since I was like 5 with my Dad. Still watch it. It's a good show, but yeah it's more intro to trades than a how to guide.
>>1045383
I suppose but ive learned a bit in terms of plumbing and areas that I don't really have experience in
I modeled picture related a while ago, and only recently have I had the time or money to actually build it. I'm going to be getting a new computer rig pretty soon, and my current desk won't fit it.
What kind of wood would y'all recommend for a computer desk? I know something hard for the main 'desk' surface, so writing doesn't scratch it to shit, but beyond that I don't know what'd look good, last long and not break the bank. I'm pretty good at woodworking, just that I've never built indoor furniture, most of the stuff I've made were outdoor or garage stuff.
>>1045273
Budget is a big consideration. Oak is pretty hardy but expensive. Furniture-grade plywood is cheaper but requires more work to look nice. You might use a cheaper base wood and veneer it with a nice wood.
All that said, I would seriously reconsider that design. The sides and bottom are very weird.
considering what you'll be doing all day, just make sure it is more stain resistant rather than strong
>>1045273
why does it have a bottom plate? and side plates for that matter, since u already have 4 legs
