In the past year, my car has been ransacked three times and today my car has been stolen. I am fed up with this horseshit and I want to do something about it because I know the police won't help me.

What I want to do is to make an improvised security system. There's a small crevice on my window (curtains are pulled down basically) where I can see where my family's cars are parked and thought that maybe I can use a spare cell phone as an inconspicuous camera. However, I don't have the faintest idea on how to kick start this idea.

tl;dr - I want to make a diy security camera

if you want a security camera, no matter what you do you're going to need a DVR with lots of storage, which is going to be a big cost
IIRC there's a android app in the f-droid repo that turns any phone into a IP camera

How do I get rid of mold?
33 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Need more information than that. What kind of mold? Where is it? What's it growing on?
A bleach solution will work in most situations, but you need to keep the bleach to water ratio at 1:16 or lower depending on what you're cleaning, whether it's a living space, the quality of the ventilation, etc.
>>
>>1049528
>A bleach solution will work in most situations
Bleach's strength is ionic, and as such the killing power stays on the surface. You'll need other things (like quatenary ammonium) to penetrate below the surface. That said, bleach can't hurt. But mold is fucking tough, and mold spores are everywhere.
>>
>>1049468
Their website makes it look like scam shit, but concrobium actually works pretty well. BUT the mold was caused by something, and if you don't fix that problem, you're fucked.

Similarly if the mold has penetrated porous surfaces too thoroughly, you're going to have to trash it.

So anything paper or cloth, toss. Same with the sheet rock. Any wood studs, take and shave with a knife, if the wood inside is also black, it has to go. Fix your moisture problem. Spray everything with the concrobium, and follow instructions on label. Seal cleaned surfaces with Kilz or similar. Rebuild the demo's shit (lay new floor coverings, put on new sheetrock, etc).

Get your air quality tested before moving back in.

Hey /diy/,

I'm an amateur lock picker. I started out when a locksmith charged me $100 for 3 minutes of work, and I'm still mad.

Next week I'll be getting a pick gun. I live in a dormitory, and I'm considering offering free locksmith services because I can, and because I really want to undermine the local locksmith vultures who are getting fat off poor students who lock themselves out.

I already have a rep for being a helpful guy, but I'm wondering if this is a too suspicious service to offer for free. I can't charge anything for it as that is highly illegal when I don't have a license, but I can encourage donations of pizza and beer.

Also, general lock picking thread. All praise our Lordy Teacher, Bosnian Bill.

I play with cheap padlocks as my personal take on a rubix cube, don't have any real tools or skill though. How did you pick it up? Did you buy or make your picks?
>>

I'm the head of the resident council. We already have a service where people can leave a spare key with us that we then unlock their doors with for free when they lock themselves out. But only half the dorm have spares down there, and it hurts me every time a qt grill in pajamas have to call one of those greedy fucks.

So if that was the case, we would already be constantly blamed for shit being stolen. But no one steals anything anyway except for milk and freeze pizzas from the shared kitchens.

I want to be able to use my remote to start my SUV in my garage during the winter without worrying about carbon monoxide building up in the garage even with the door open.

My garage is like this one but very poorly insulated and it's also not heated and in the shade, So during winter it gets very cold in there.

I want to run flexible pipe that can handle the heat of the exhaust and run it to a dryer style vent in the back of my garage to behind my house

My questions are,

What type of flexible preferably rubber pipe can I use that can handle the heat of car exhaust?

My SUV's exhaust tip is 4 inches round

Also by the time the exhaust gets to the vent it should be cool enough to just use a dryer vent right?

>>

>without worrying about carbon monoxide building up in the garage even with the door open.

If the door is open you don't have a fucking problem so cease worrying.

Otherwise, buy a proper exhaust duct. If you ever have a fire your insurance company will not be pleased you Presidentially Engineered an exhaust duct.

>exhaust terrifies my ignorant ass but how can I ignore fire codes because I'm cheap and foolish

There are plenty of parts and systems available online. Google "garage exhaust kits" etc.
Hot rod and other forums have info too.

How can I make a laser that appears to be swirling in the air ? Would putting a mirror thats spinning circular with very high speeds then directs it back to directional be able to sync the laser with our eyes fps to make it look like it ?
82 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>1048889
Not how light works. Eyes don't have FPS, just cut out a lot of intermediary information to make jittery motion seem smooth. It would look like a column of light, not a helix.
>>
>>1048889
you can use a rotating head of a water gun of some sort, and an internal led to light up the stream from within the gun itself.

you won't actually make it out of actual laser, that is for certain, so you will have to think of creative ways for the "effect".
>>
>>1048892
>>1048899
How though ? It's doable with water.

https://youtu.be/nPBdImGeFxs?t=442

Maybe it would be possible to eject a high speed liquid with led lighting it up from the gun to make that effect. But I'd rather do it with a laser.

I have a lot of 18650s pulled from laptop batteries, and was thinking of making a "small" power bank for my laptop.

It's a 19v Sony Vaio.

How would I go about stepping up the voltage with an adequate current? Connect them in series?
Is there an adapter that'll maintain a steady 19v output?
Am hoping for a minimum of 75% efficiency.

Pic unrelated, obviously

>>
>>1048382
problem you are going to run into is since you pulled the 18650s from multiple packs they will be different capacities, resistances, and levels of wear which is pretty bad to make a battery pack from.
>>
>>1049290
I could use them from the same pack?

That'll give me up to roughly 36w of battery power iirc

Home business ideas.

Hello /diy/, I am currently have an unfinished basement in Northern Alberta that is basically unused. Currently I am looking to supplement my income. I already have plans for hunting (if the only gun course instructor would answer my fucking calls), fishing ect. My wife currently gardens in a VERY small patch. I was thinking about installing a small garden in the basement and growing high value crops, like herbs or mushrooms and selling as many as I can over the winter, maybe micro greens. I could potentially even approach local restaurants.

I have dabbled in computer repair, video game console modding, cell repair ect. I have also been looking at leveraging other skills I have like teaching piano.

However I am looking towards DIY for a decent, basement business I could run. Any information or resources is helpful.

Any suggestions on a strain? I know shiitake and oyster are popular. Any other suggestions? Nobody in my local market really sells mushrooms other than the super market (cremini, white button, oyster kits, portabello ect).
>>
>>1046205
other people might have an opinion, but I'd focus on whatever I could grow cheapest that has some demand

there are torrents with mushroom literature; if you have a library, that might be a good place to look for info

earlier this year I tried spreading some wild native species onto logs....I don't think the season started yet, however I'm anxious to see if anything comes of it.....certainly growing them inside with jars or bags would be faster

I can't wait to try making some mushroom jerky

My Subaru outback is leaking oil @ a rate of 1 mile / quart. (not a typo)

I just changed the oil seal for my left camshaft because there was a less severe leak.

Before i could tell where it is leaking, now, nothing.

The underbelly of my car just seems wet with oil.

i don't understand how this much oil can leak without dropping to the floor. Anyone have any ideas?

Most likely the head gasket is shot. The 2.5 is terrible about blowing head gaskets.
>>
>>1045470
Clean the car, check for new oil. Also look in your radiator. If its got oil in it it's probably a blown head gasket. Also have a mate follow you around for a bit and see what the exhaust looks like.
>>
>>1045470
Head gaskets. Will wick out from the centerline and cover the entire engine. Welcome to Subaru.

To confirm, pressure wash the bottom of the engine so it's spotless, then turn it over/run it a bit until it starts dripping. The first drops should appear somewhere around the head/block seam, possibly directly over the front axles.

I'm wanting to make custom Oppai mousepads for several people I know for Christmas. However, most websites that sell customs only sell them in bulk, requiring one to buy 50-100 of them at once. Are there any good websites that would let me buy one-off custom Oppai mousepads, or would I be better off making them from scratch? I was thinking I could maybe get custom prints on some kind of stretchy fabric and just whip some up if I can't find another option.

>stretchy fabric and just whip some up if
That seems like a reasonable option, look into silk screening services and the like. Custom T-shirts or whatever.

I have no idea what these things are, but just figuring here, you could get a decent proxy of a tit by using a fill of expanded polystyrene beads with a thin EDPME or silicone manifold around them-- maybe with some low density foam under that...

Point being the beads would give that 'watery jiggly' feel, but are nobby, so we want to guard against that tactile with the foam and silicone manifold to smooth everything out.

The big problem here-- tits are ALLOT more massive per cubic cm than expanded plastic beads.

Oh, another option-- fuck I can't remember what it's called, it's a mix of detergent, non Newtonian fluid-- corn starch derp-- and polystyrene beads.

It was sold as a product in the 00s, OH I remember-- FLOAM! You can find recipes for it easily enough.

Another goopy thing you might want to look at would be boron slimes-- there's a bunch of different types, several of which you can make with household crap you probably have laying around, borax, PVA glue, table salt, etc.

There, OP, you now have research vectors-- FOR SCIENCE!
