I too love old tools. Mostly because I can acquire them for a fraction of the price of new tools and they tended to be overbuilt compared to them modern equivalent.

The gem of today's acquisitions: A Stanley Bailey #6 hand plane.Based on a Stanley dating guide is was produced sometime between 1902 and 1909. So it's 106 years old at the youngest. Outside of some very minor surface rust on the sole, it is in workshop ready condition. As the picture will show I paid only $15 dollars for it.

It's just a nut and a bolt. There is no hinge.

Sex bolts, a regular nut and bolt would work fine too.

I tried dismantling the legs and found that the bolt they used is this one so I checked my local hardware and they said don't carry anything like it.

I just graduated with a bachelors degree in University (General) Studies. I currently work in a warehouse(2 years, part time) as an order selector, but I was thinking of taking up welding. My community college offers classes, but all of them are filled except for one (TIG), which I can take in the morning or evening. I feel like I can actually learn MIG and stick from people who have learned the art.

A position opened up in the warehouse to work in the morning from 7-4, so it could give me the chance to make money while taking the class at the same time. They also provide logistics classes, mostly in the evening and some on Saturday.

Should I stick to working in a warehouse? Or should I start to learn welding?

I feel the degree would help me move up faster, but I'm willing to work with everyone else to learn as much as I can about either job before telling others how to do their job.

Here are the questions to ask:

Do you like welding, like the physical process of welding?

Are you willing to do that for 8-12 hours a day, depending on the type of job you earn after the school, and the apprenticeship. Possibly welding the same kinds of things repeatedly.

Are you willing to learn multiple kinds of welding or be stuck in one type of welding for the rest of your days?

Where do you expect your warehouse job to take you in 5 years, 10 years, if you take the class and stick with it?

Where do you expect the welding school, apprenticeship, and job to take you in 5 and 10 years?

If you really like welding, then by all means, but don't let others meme you into something you just find interesting.

Stick with what you like/are good at, can always pick up welding as a hobby.

My brother knows HVAC but he's so fucking lazy he wouldn't explain how to do this, only what is wrong.

My furnace keeps turning off after only being on for maybe 5 minutes. An although it puts out heat it keeps turning off and tries to turn back on but doesn't unless you turn it off then on again and it does the same thing.

He told me there is a flame sensor in my furnace and it needs to be cleaned by using steel wool or a light grit sand paper.

How do I do this? How can I find out where the sensor is? He said it's a long metal rod and it might not be visible

How do I take it off first? Which bolts should I remove to access it? I think the AC is the bottom portion although I may be wrong

It's a condo, Not a house.

Hi there /DIY,

I've got a load of brass that i need to clean up real good - the problem in both cases is that i have hundreds of pieces to clean so am looking for some solutions that are simple and not overly backbreaking.

problem 1 - one set of brass arrived with significant tarnishing

problem 2 - the second set of brass was laser cut with a plastic backing on it that has burnt on. its a pain in the ass but will come off with some acetone and scrubbing with a magic eraser.

because of the use i have planned or the brass i realy need to avoid introducing any scratches at all so want to avoid abrasion as much as possible.

any thoughts here about how best to clean up? I'd ask over in /k but y'know .... I'm pretty liberal

tarnish pic attached

Trying to find a heavy duty bag to haul some gear around. Something roughly the size and shape of a school bag is ideal because I use public transport a lot and can't carry a massive bag everywhere I go.

Preferably something that can fit a welding helmet and some other misc instruments.

Thanks.

Trying to think of cheaper ways of powering a 12v compressor/inflator. It needs to draw 10-15A max, the lower cost adapters that are only like 5A won't quite cut it.

My first guesses would be either a battery charger/jumper or a pc power supply.

If you want a power supply that hauls the mail, get a DPS-1200FB server power supply. You only need a resistor to make it work.

Hi /diy/ers.

If theres anyone here who knows electrics or can understand whats going on here I would massively apreciate a reply.

Ive been fitting a kitchen which includes some LEDs, 2 of which run from 240 and obviously have built in transformers and the other 2 have a transformer they plug into.

I ran a wire up to the loft and found the power wire to the light switch in the kitchen. I cut the wire and added a junction box and connected the wire for the LEDs in to this. By my understanding this should mean the LEDs are permanently live and the main light works by the switch as the LEDs have independant switches.

When switched back on with the light switch on the main light works but the LEDs do nothing. Then when the light switch is off it causes the LED lights to flash like a strobe effect and the main light also flashes in time with them.

When removing the ones with built in transformers from the circuit the exact same thing happens.

When removing the ones with the external transformer one light works as it should but the other still strobes.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell could be going on here?

Ive attached a simple diagram. Not an electrician but done a lot of simple things but never fitted this type of light. Thanks.

I didnt order the stuff, the customer got the items and this was included with what they got. These are the leds that use a transformer but they have nothing to indicate what they are. The others are light boxes with led strips but not sure what they are exactly.
>>
No idea whats going on with your wiring, but your diagram appears to show a switch across phase and neutral. If that still looks okay to you, for your own safety its time to find a sparky.

Fuck, idk. I'm just paid to sling that ship up with staples.

Actually, they're huge beams. It was nothing out of the ordinary for someone who started out with a smallog cabin and renovated it to some thing larger.

I have done some cursory research, but I have a bunch of other garbage to do today.

Have any of you experimented with different ferrofluid techniques? It seems like "Just add magnetite powder to oleic acid/vegetable oil" is too good to be true.

If I want to just put small amounts in small jars to give away for Christmas, what should I suspend it in? What is MICR toner made of in the first place?

My current plan is to just buy some test tubes with stoppers and try whatever comes up in this thread. I would love to see if anyone has images of what they have already made.

It is too good to be true. It ends up looking like shit. Go with the oleic acid, ferric chloride, ammonia, route
>>

Do you have any pictures? Just curious as to what the ferric chloride route ends up being.
>>
>>1085772
Fucking. Google. It.

It's pretty much the same as the ferrofluid that's commercially available.

BTW it appears you can now buy shiny golden colored ferrofluid bottles on certain chinese websites
