My wife and I are thinking of buying a Dyson Cinetic canister vac.

Should I bite? Everyone I know who has a Dyson swears by them. I don't want to deal with shit like bags, ongoing maintenance costs, or inferior suction/dust gathering ability. Though the vacuum mafia declares brands like Miele, Riccar and Kirby are superior, they actually cost more and require bags.

I have a Bissell 1646 PowerGlide Pet Vacuum. I've been very happy with it. It has some minor flaws but its also only $110 on Amazon right now, which is about $15 cheaper then when I bought it.

How would I go about fortifying a house in Detroit so I could feel safe going to work an hour and a half away

I was kind of thinking of buying a house in Detroit because they are so incredibly cheap even when they were built very recently.

I found a 3 bedroom 2 bath, built in 2001 with a finished basement for 40K. In fact there are a lot, Mostly bank owned.

I live about an hour from Detroit now but in a very good neighborhood.

How would I go about fortifying it?

>one of the more rural parts of Detroit. It's like going back to country It's so deserted

Depends on what part of detroit to be honest.

Fencing, run of the mill security systems, wifi stuff so you can record movement and check on the place from your phone. I spend a decent amount of time there and there are areas it seems like nothing would matter in, as you won't get cops anywhere near it in less than a half an hour.

Bars on windows would probably do the trip for the most part though if it's getting shit stolen that you're worried about.
>>
>>1086725

Easiest way would be to give it wheels.

That way, you can tow it out of Detroit.

Figured this would be the best place for this thread, not exactly DIY though.

I got a new job recently, where I was expecting to do marine electrical work, but the owner of the company heard that I used to run a few different cnc machines and wants me to learn how to run pic related, made in 1998.

Cast iron frame 3 axis router, 8 magazine auto tool changer, pneumatically stabilized spindle, vac table, made in 1998. 7" CRT display.

Far beyond what I used to run (8 foot by 8 foot plasma cutter table, 1 foot by 1 foot desktop mill, 3d printers, etc.).

I'm fishing for good advice and resources on learning how to control this thing.

My biggest fear is the zero point getting out of whack/tool calibrations, resulting in a head crash.

Machine will be used to cut foam core and solid carbon fiber pieces for boat building (Using an extremely interesting diamond bit).

Company uses Rhino and a custom cable to drip feed the machine, since it is so old. Apparently it was being run off of an ancient 8086 or something similar until recently.

first, CNC routers don't normally have super tight positioning tolerances. second, FANUC control is a FANUC control. as long as you are good with the CAM software (i've never used rhino) you should be okay.

is it a custom post processor or just a generic router one?

i pray you have the manual somewhere.

I bought a foreclosed house. All of the copper was stolen. I replaced some of it with cpvc and some of it from the boiler to the hot water radiators with 1'' and 1&1/4'' copper. Between Valves and everything else around $1500 worth of copper. Nevermind the labor involved. In hind site someone told me I could have used pex. but not the person who helped me install it.

My neighbor has a son who seems to be a full time copper thief. I'm sweating bullets over it because i'm not in the house yet. The lady across the street told me she saw him by my house last night and he had just gotten out of jail. So I'm eager to use the security system that came with the house but I've never used one before.

Its a DSC-832. with those magnetic sensors on all the doors and windows. Except I have a few broken pains still that are boarded up because I thought the boards were harder to get through than the windows.

Anyone with experience in security system feel free to weigh in. I'm a little reluctant to call ADT because I'm pretty sure they will try to sell me a newer system and it looks like someone has already done most of the hard work.

if you don't know the code to the sec system just call ADT and explain to them so that they can reset it.

> I'm pretty sure they will try to sell me a newer system
so what, are you that much of a cockmungling faggot you can't just say "no thanks, just reset this one"

you faggot
>>
First off, where do you live? I'm guessing from the description, it's not a nice neighborhood.

Timeline:
0:00 Person kicks in back door
0:30-1:00 Security system alerts monitoring center that code has not been entered
0:30-3:00 Monitoring company calls you to confirm false alarm
0:30-1:00 You tell them it is not a false alarm
0:30-5:00 They contact local PD
5:00-30:00 They arrive at your house

Ignoring the fact that even once they get there they might still not catch the person and the fact that if they see a kicked in door they will call for backup. Best case scenario is that police will arrive in ~7 minutes. This is assuming that there is basically a cop down the block. They're not going to be rushing to your house at 100mph full sirens.

The average police response time is about 10 minutes nationally and a "good" monitoring center response is about 1 minute.

11 minutes is more than enough for a guy with a sawzall to grab a few hundred in copper.

Yes, calling a security company will have them try to sell you a new system.

Cheaper and just as effective is to just use a loud audible alarm. You already know the old lady across the street is nosy, just use her to call the cops instead of paying ADT.

Other things:
Motion lighting
Reinforced door jambs
Properly installed deadbolts

Those three are easily the most bang for your buck and call all be knocked out in an afternoon.

You can also:
Buy a dog
-Most robbers aren't going to even try with a dog.
Buy fake security system signs.
-Might scare off some stupid thieves
Park a car in the driveway
-Number one deterrent to burglars is someone home
Put lamps on timers in evening
-Home alone that shit. Much less likely to work on next door neighbor though since he will be able to look through windows with total impunity.
Casually bring up to the suspected thief that some cunts stole all the copper so you replaced it with plastic
-If he thinks there is nothing of value, he won't even bother risk it

Hello diy. I am in the process of buying a small home and would like to build or have built a garage/shop.

The garage/shop will be 24' wide.

And between 24 and 36' long. I havent decided.

And made out of CMU.

I only have 1 truck atm but i want to build the thing to hold at least 2 and have room for wood working and welding.

I also want to put in a car lift.
Shop air, 3 phase power, a slop sink and a shitter.

What i want to know, what would you put in your shop/garage?.

my old boss had huge financial freedom and bought a custom worktable for his garage suspended from the ceiling that was lowered with a electric pulley system, table was solid steel and about 10 by 8 and you could also store shit on it and hide it all away when you were done. he liked it so much he installed a second. It was cool as fuck.

Just poetic a quick dissection of the fairly new Feit Electric LED bulbs, 60w equivalent.
I forget which, but home depot or Lowe's started selling these for around 12-15 for 6, ruining the market for more expensive companies.
This one died today. I was checking for catastrophic failure, but found nothing. The other 5 are going strong.

8 LEDs, surface mount. Nothing special going on. Screws are tiny Phillips fastened onto an aluminium platter with heat transfer paste underneath. Odd, the heat would then go into the area where the board is. And they do get warm.

And the bottom. You may not be able to tell, but there are a few places where solder is touching from 2 separate components. May or may not be intentional. Can't really tell if these are quality components or not, but I did expect much, much worse.

That's about it. Hopefully someone who is considering switching to LED bulbs can compare this quality to teardowns of other brands.

Does anyone know how I can turn a log into a snare drum. I wanna make it solid like people used to do but I'm having troubles with making it.
10 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
you mean hollowing out the log, stretching leather over both ends and then stretching springs over the bottom membrane so that their tension can be adjusted?
>>
it looks pretty solid right now
>>
>>1084432

Generally, thats not how people make a solid shell snare...

It's usually a steam bent piece of solid (maple, birch, cherry, etc), thats formed on a shell press...

Others build stave snares, kind of like building wine barrels (think coopering)...

There is a guy that builds/built drum shell out of a solid log...he turned them a a rather large lathe...I don't know how well this would turn out desu...

So, I suggest you look into steam bending or stave work...much better results...

Rear ended a woman this morning and left a scratch on her bumper.

The whole thing has left a funny taste in my mouth for various reasons, but now I am thinking that I am being taken for a ride.

I know it's hard to tell from a picture, but any car repair/body work guys able to tell me roughly what it would cost to repair pic related?

>>
Wheres the scratch? Just ask if you can cover it with some touch up paint of the same color
>>
Legally, if you're at fault, and a report was submitted, you're required to do the repair that she and her company choose.

If you didn't have a report done, did not call police or insurance, and have no damage on your vehicle, and DID NOT give your insurance info, then tell her to pack sand.

If she is threatening to call insurance, tell her to do it. Your rates won't go up too high, and the repairs needed are minimal. They'll pretty much shrug it off.
>>
>>1083852

Honestly I don't know where the scratch is. She jumped out of the car screaming that it was a lease and there was a scratch.

Obviously I did hit her and I am responsible for it, so I am going to have to pay for it, but she just called and said that she got an estimate for $900 because they will have replace the entire bumper. I looked over the car and couldn't find anything wrong with it myself, and replacing the bumper seems like over kill when it's just buffing out a scratch, but I only know how to make them run, not make them pretty.

I am planning to make SLA printer, wich is no more difficult than reprap.

And i got some "stupid" questions.
Is most of 5mW laser poiters good, or it should be more powerfull to get some better times of curing? Is most of them little bit adjustable by potentiometer, like green usually have?
How is power of laser counted? V*I minus eventual percentage or what? is it very easy to fuck it with overvoltage or overcurrent?
Or maybe green would be better??

Power = a Speed of process and how Deep laser light will penetrate resin.
I'm using 100mW 406nm ttl controlled laser you can get it from ebay or aliexpress.
What you need to understand is how resin reacting on light, exactly the light spectrum, of absorption.
Take a look on pic attached most of resin is activated with light less then 400nm ( violet and Ultra violet) and with light in range of blue the reaction time is so poor you will need much more exposition time or energy.
Iv tested first on Blue laser 2W 460nm it barely thicken, effect was soft and rubbery, then Iv get my self 406nm Violet laser 100mW and effect was instant hardening. I look for 385nm Laser but the price goes expansionary for lasers deeper ultraviolet then price goes into thousand of pounds and power goes down 5mw - 20mw max.

But there is other approach of making SLA/DPL printer, instead of using laser as source of light and mechanical or optical mechanism to move laser as printer head is used to print in normal 3d printer.
Is possible to get high resolution screen ( like TTF display ) just black and white mono-crystal display ( the calculator screen ) and use it as a matrix.
Instead of printing layer by moving laser from point to point you printing whole layer at once Polarization and mono-crystal matrix working as shutters they blocking or allowing light to be transferred by pixels as a source of light i propose to use Reptile terrarium light CFL ( it producing kind of white light with 30 % of UVA nad 5-10% UVB ) this length of light is perfect for all UV resins.
Unfortunately Standard TTF LCD screen even if you remove CFL lights and replace them with UVA-UVB light source will be useless the TTF matrix has build in UV filter making it pretty useless for that. I saw Some DPL build on Projectors but they have lo resolution and not so great light source ( low in UV light )

No no, net power. I red somewere its like V*current * 0.4, don't know how much real is this.
Thank for informing this things.

I was thinking about lcd mask and lamp just like you, but reprap construct looks much easyer for me to make cause of softwere. Also there maight be problem with screen that maight not lets UV go throu.
Theres a guy that made it on 20mW blue or more like violet lasers.
And pixels are 0,17-0,2m, laser can be like 0,15-0,1.

I was thinking about puting 3W led UV, and mask it with hole 0,1mm...
