As a pro, you should really just buy whatever you need and throw it on a breadboard. As a hobbyist, buy whatever card comes in a kit with all the shit you need for your project.
I work at an electrical engineering office with a bunch of nerds and the only thing I've seen an Arduino used for in our shop is turning on our Keureg on a Monday-Friday schedule with a permissive input that keeps it off if the security system is armed. I hear Pi's are ok for tiny entertainment center controllers since they can output 1080p, so that's neat.
>>
been using Pis for simple shit like an adblocking DNS server and a simple NAS server. also got one running as a retro PI for old games.

Hello /diy/,

Buying my second home and this one will require a lot of repainting as it was inhabited by boomers - mostly interior stuff like walls and doors. Was hoping to use a sprayer like the Flexio 590 (need to buy still) and also be able to use air tools like a 1/2 inch impact to work on my car.

What's missing is a good portable (meaning, on wheels - not a pancake) compressor. What's your best recommendation for under $400?

Pic semi related.

I have a 12gal 1/2hp Craftsman.
My typical tools used with it are:
>blow gun
>air chuck; motorcycles/pickup/trailers
>impact, 1/2"
>nibbler
>brad nailer

It's done well overall in the 7 years i've owned it. Certainly wouldn't recommend any smaller.

What I did two or three years ago, and kind of wish I did earlier, was buy a 10gal portable tank from HFT, $50 worth of fittings/valves, and made that a "parallel" tank with the compressor.
That gave me almost twice the air volume, and the portable tank is real nice for those jobs around the house where I need to secure some floor trim or top off a tire or two but don't want to shuffle around the compressor.

Compressor eats a head gasket every 2-3 years. Starts taking longer to recharge, but a cheap rebuild kit and an evening in the garage along with an oil change it needs anyways gets it fully functional again. Otherwise it's performed well.

Replace the shitty drain valve with a 90° elbow to barb, a short section of hose, and another barb fitting/blowgun. Makes the tank much easier to drain, and you'll do it more often. Shit'll last longer when it's not compressing water.

Wouldn't recommend an oilless, unless you're going for a real small pancake-type compressor with fairly low duty cycle. Knowing you'll be using high-cfm air tools, look for air volume and a good oiled compressor.

After I move, i'm looking into the purchase of a 60gal Quincy or IR.

What's the minimum CFM I should be going for?

I need to make something to unplug and replug my internet remotely and be as small as possible.Any ideas how? I'm no engineer but if you guys could point me in the right direction that would be amazing

You are not precise. Also, that is probably NOT a solution for your real problem, whatever it is. This is probably best fro you - enter your router's IP in the address bar, log in and reboot it that way
>>
>>1227746
This isnt for remote booting
This is for cameras that my friend put up
>>
>>1227754
How often do you need to reboot them? Can't you just put them on a digital timer that reboots them every X number of hours/days or whatever?

what's the craic lads? I have a garden shed very similar to pic related. Its 10-15 metres away from the house and its already been connected to the houses electricity.

The problem is that my WiFi signal isn't very strong. Two bars at BEST. What are my options here?

I was thinking of running an ethernet cable from my house to the shed but then do I install an ethernet port or just plug the wire into my PC/Laptop/Console ?

My shop is more than that distance from my router. Look into best router/wifi dongle combo.

I connected a USB wifi adapter to a long USB cable then sealed the adapter to cable and covered the entire adapter with 3M 5200.

It's worked nicely for eight years so far. Dongle hangs outside the wall of my steel building. Any weatherproof (not RTV, but serious shit like 3M 5200 or a non-metallic epoxy would do.
>>
If you already have a spare conduit running there, just pull some CAT5e (or CAT6e) cable through it. :D
Install a jack at each end, surge protection if you care to, and then patch it into your router on the end at the house, and then plug whatever you desire into it in the shed.
This is the best, ideal solution.
It should be compliant with all local electrical and building codes, especially if it's surge protected.

If you do not have conduit / have no spare conduit run, you could get 'direct burial' cable and bury it in the ground directly. This is to code in most places, and I definitely recommend surge protection in this case.

If you cannot bury a cable, and you only have space in the conduit with the electrical cables, you could TRY running it through there but, the AC power interference over that long a run, being sandwiched with power cables... may not be too good. (So, maybe get shielded CAT6e cable if going this route?)
It's really against building codes in a lot of areas to do this though, so I wouldn't advise it. Go with wireless in this case.

I'd probably set up a wireless client bridge receiver on the shed, kind of like what >>1227666 was talking about, but a little fancier.
Then surge protect the line coming into the shed, and install a jack there. Plug in whatever you want. :D
(Look up ENS202EXT... Wireless b/g bridge that's cheap af. Works well from my experience. Weatherproof. Comes with their PoE adapter so you only run one cable.)
>>
>>1227674
i have the same issue as OP, and have considered some of these options. one option might be ethernet run over the power lines. they make these wifi repeaters you can plug into wall sockets, and you'd just need one out in the shed since power is run out there already.

another option, since i'm expanding my network to use PoE for security cameras, is to simply run a PoE ethernet cable to the back porch or garage, and install a Ubiquiti outdoor access point. just getting another WiFi access closer to the shed should improve things dramatically.

Hey guys,
what would be the cheapest way to store 15kwh of solar and wind energy? 18650s? Or lead acid? I've tried looking but it really is tough.
50 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>1224229
unironically the tesla powerwall
>>
I live on a boat and currently am using two sealed 4d gel cells and two deep cycle wet cells for a theoretical total ~4kwh.

Lead acid looks cheaper at first but they have a discharge limit of 80% before cycle count degrades meaning you'd have to buy a lot more of them to get your full 14kwh discharge. They are also more lossy when charging, discharging, and lose more power the faster you discharge them.

Good 18650s when not buying by the pallet are very spencive. Buying lots of dead laptop batteries to rip open and salvage good cells is time consuming. $5,500 will get you a new 14kwh powerwall from tesla.

When my gel cells go that's what I'm going to do. That or buy battery modules from one of their cars. The weight savings alone would be worth it for me.
>>
>>1224238
Ripping open laptop batteries and testing them may be time consuming but if you don't value your time too much, or have downtime at certain random times through out the week, it's a great project. I can't wait to get started. Breaking and rebuilding things makes me happy, even if it gets repetitive. If it serves a useful purpose or saves me money then I just enjoy it more. Used laptop batteries are cheaaaaaap

With the rise of homebrewing's popularity (making beer, wine, etc) at home. Do you think minors making alcohol at home will become an issue?

>>
>>1208864
No. Making any sort of alcohol that doesn't kill you takes time, and time is something that kids don't comprehend.
>>
>>1208864
you ever homebrewed?
its a fucking carry on, and your house stinks like a brewery for weeks - parents be pretty dense or have to not GAF not to notice that. In saying that, made a batch when I was about 14 or so, parent(s) never batted an eyelid - naturally, we got impatient, and swallowed it slightly before recommended fermentation period had elapsed, which cured the urge to homebrew for many a year.
Mildly related, someone made me a present of a cannabis plant, was about the size of small bonsai. Was out of the house about 24 hours, flatmate had microwaved and skanked it. Still pissed about that desu. Anyway blog over, its a self-limiting 'danger' I'd guess - Id actually encourage a kid to do it, beer only, once, beats vidya and nonsense.

GOF checking in and taking a nibble.

I was 14 and got a great idea from a Foxfire book and tried to make some moonshine. Was somewhat successful and had about 3' of flames coming out of the pressure cooker when I was trying to distill my mash. Nice ball of blue and yellow flames flying out the backdoor, looks pretty at night :)

Much easier and quicker to have the janitor at school leave a pint of Kessler whiskey under the seat of his car in the parking lot than making beer or wine.

I was wondering if any of you might know how to either make a catalytic converter for a lawnmower or re-purpose an existing one for a lawnmower?
I just got done mowing my lawn again and I can tell I breathed in a lot of terrible stuff. It feels like sludge in my throat and I start to get massive headaches every time I do it; it's also more difficult to breathe.
I read news stories from 2014 that said there were who had working catalytic converters that could be fitted to mowers, but of course 3 years later you still can't go and buy one of them.
Failing getting a catalytic converter I guess I'll just have to get one of those crappy electric mowers, because I just can't deal with this shit anymore.
Please help /diy/.

>>
>>1231299
An hour of mowing creates the same gasses as a 100 mile drive. I'll go with trying to install a converter...
>>
>>1231297

It wouldn't be that hard. The only caveat you need to know about is that catalytic converters require spare oxygen/exhaust in order to actually work. In modern engines, there are sometimes no provisions on the cat itself for this, relying instead on the ECU itself to rapidly alternate between lean/rich condition. You'll need a cat that has an oxygen injection tube (and, of course, a suitable pump to actually inject said oxygen), and to be sure that the engine runs slightly lean.

Found all this crap out when trying to get an old-ass truck to pass smog. Discovered a bunch of holes in the exhaust letting air in, dropping HC but driving NOx emissions through the roof.

Tried to sew a leather wallet with a sewing awl once. It was slow and hard on my fingers and not worth the effort at all.

Most shameful was an attempt at removing the frets from a bass guitar. Had the wrong tool for it and made a real mess of the fingerboard. It was a cheap shitty bass though.

Saws all or a big shear.

For the second option, go to an hvac shop. I'm sure they'll do it for a box of donuts. And it'll be straight.

I'd better explain this further... At the moment the only non-powertool for cutting metal I have is the hacksaw, but I could potentially buy some other cheap tools for it too. The main issue is that they'll have to be quiet, which is why I'll need to cut this by hand.
