I've gotten into making spoon rings and want to take care of fire scale that builds up in the annealing process. I've been using a pickle recipe that is 1 tbsp salt to 1 cup vinegar and it works ok, but I was wondering if any of y'all had a pickle recipe that was 1: non-toxic and 2: more effective than that one. The googles give me "salt and vinegar and heat" over and over with little else outside toxic pickles like sulfuric acid based ones.

Well, probably wont help you much but if you are buying pickling shit anyway pic related is fucking epic. You "bar styke pickled eggs." Ran out for the last mucherfucking tine yesterday and will be three weeks before i can have more.

Tonight i'm headed to walmart for $500 worth of eggs and oickling shit and already built a cellar shelf to store the mutherfuckers.

Good luck on your project OP. And to any anons into pickled eggs, you'll never pay $8 a dozen at the store for shit quality product again if u follow this pic.
>>
>>1143170
Hope you're not planning to pickle the little guy. I'd take him for sure.
>>
>>1143170
i do this occasionally. i use kosher salt, cut the vinegar with some water. boil the water but let it cool off. i don't like to use heat on the shit i'm pickling because it stays more "crisp". i forget the ratios i usually use, i just go by taste compared to a jar of pickles i buy and make a few gallons of brine at a time. when i pick stuff from the garden i just stuff them into jars and pour the premade brine/spices on them and stick them in the fridge. I'm bored so I'm probably gonna go google around for shit now. if i find anything interesting I'll share it here.

There is nothing wrong with makerspaces. Wish I had one where I live. If I want to do woodwork I have to invest in thousands of dollars worth of precision tooling that I'll never wear down in the couple of years that I'll be an unemployed student, after which point I'll start investing. A makerspace would let me use these tools for an affordable fee and let me learn and be inspired from other like-minded people.

Unless you're commenting that of the one or few makerspaces you've visited they're either a hotbed for unprofessional practices or unclean workspaces.

Either way nice b8.

>best way to find people who are interested in whatever you're working on

Your problem with makerspaces is...?
>>
If you live in any reasonably large urban centre things like makerspaces and men's sheds and co-ops are really the most sane way to go about it.

Space is expensive for individuals.

Hello /diy/ !

I know that a lot of you guys actually enjoy playing guitar. I was wondering if its a hard task to create one by myself ? My girlfriend is wood sculptor and i thought that maybe it's good idea to give it a try and actually create my own electric guitar ! Could you help me with this project ?

I'm doing that too.

From what I have gathered, wiring and installing the working parts of an electric guitar are fairly straightforward. The difficult part is making a guitar design that does not look like shit, has a functional shape, has nice resonance and has a nice finish. all of the rest can be conquered with guides, accurate maths and pre soldiered kits.

Making something better than a pre built is the real challenge.

Electronic part is rather easy.. Im more concern about design. How did you start ? Do you have any models or where can i get those ? As i said, my girlfriend is wood sculptor and might help me with it but is need some kind of model. Maybe creating shade of other guitars might work.
>>
The neck and joining it correctly to the body is the tricky bit. The body itself and the electronics is fairly simple. You will need to rent a router to route the holes for pickups and possibly bridge (bridge style depending).

The neck... it may be better worth your time and money to just buy one. Getting the tools and materials together for a one off project will be almost as expensive as the premade neck. It only gets cheaper when you're already setup with everything to make them.

OK, hear me out /diy/, I just got a roomba and it blows my mind how much housework it saved me.

It really made me think how many other menial tasks robots could save me and I thought, fuck me I hate watering the garden. Even with irrigation, which you have to spend a decent amount of cash setting up and your own time/someone else's time to dig in and sort out the programming, it still takes time and effort.

So I thought 'why not have a roomba-like robot with a tank of water and a fucking sprinkler on it that goes around watering the garden and lawns. Basically one unit would comprise of

>Slow but robust carriage mechanism that can crawl over small rocks and shit
>Small water tank
>Sprinkler
>Sensors

So it can learn the layout of your garden and sprinkle as needed. Fuck you could even give it a little aerial that goes up with another sprinkler to get high level plants and it can learn your garden layout and you can point out pot plants and shit to it.

Then when it runs out of water/power, it goes back to a docking station where it recharges and fills with water. The dock station would just need a mains connection and a hose into it.

Thoughts? Any engineers can put a word in about the feasibility? I mean fuck they already have a mopping robot, how different can it be?

Water is insanely heavy.

Also it's much cheaper to buy a garden hose and poke some holes in it.
>>
>>1138604
It might be heavy, but it can't be too hard to figure out a reasonable balance of weight and recharge time. Obviously a garden hose with holes is cheap, but this is 0 fucking work, especially if you have a complicated garden.
>>
>>1138600
You're trying to solve a simple problem with a complex solution. There's no need for a robot to drive around watering your plants. Too many mechanical parts that don't fair well outside, and water and electric parts don't mix. Why not just run a bunch of garden hoses on the top of each row and poke holes in them. Hook them all up to a faucet and design a robot to turn on the faucet every few days

I may be getting hired for a small engine tech position. I'm familiar with engines and I'm confident I could fix a mower or something, but I don't have any relevant education and I've never actually touched a small engine. Can /diy/ give me some example problems and I'll try to diagnose the issue?

e.g.
>Turn the key to start, but nothing happens. No turning over, no lights, nothing.
Check the battery. If it's good, follow all of the wires and check electrical connections.
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1146380

altho DIY is not your personal education board, and most users will tell you to just google it....

always check to see if theres power. then move on to other components. check batery to make sure its fully charged. then check connections, check switch. look for fuses or broken wires. check power at switch check power after switch. look for any relays that might need to engage to provide power. check them, replace if bad. if its a mower with a starter as you stated, it might have a solenoid switch. those go bad and will kill power to everything.

I hope you dont need that in a hurry, because I doubt Shenzen is less than a day away. Tells you there, you should have it by May 10th tho.

goto a local store, get a multi-volt selectable adapter, prob pay 2-3 times the price, but, you'll have it quick. It'll still be Made in China tho. And how the fuck you can make, package and ship these fuckers halfway round the world for a couple of bucks - I couldn't fucking post that three streets away for twice the price.

tldr, go local, or learn Zenlike patience (Chinks R always faster than eBay quoted delivery times tho)

So I'm sick of bad audio from both my shitty earbuds and my shitty headset. I can't build myself headphones, though if anyone has experience with this I'd love to hear.

So I've decided to build myself some speakers and an amp. I don't know whether to have an internal or external amp with respect to the speakers, whether to use an amp IC or use a collection of transistors, etc. I'm not planning on going down the valve rabbit hole yet, but you're welcome to show them off.

Post ideas and circuits, also /diy/ audio general I guess.

>>

I mean, I plan on building headphones eventually, but that will require quite a lot of prototyping for comfort, material analysis, and custom parts. Fibreglass looks like the right material to build one out of at least for a prototype, maybe cast aluminium for the small precision pieces, but all the custom fittings and such are out of my league. I enjoy building things, so why not just build speakers instead? Would you suggest just buying a replacement? Where's your /diy/ spirit?

Hey, any nifity tips/tricks for a roofing laborer? Something similar like when I was doing stucco, i'd stand on the wheel barrow and toss the mud up by shovel right onto their scowls instead of climbing a ladder with buckets and taking forever.

How do I become the best damn laborer there ever was? As It is i'm not strong enough to carry lots of bundles up ladders, and I dont have a really good method of dragging the heavy ass tarps to the bin by myself yet. But yeah, any advice or words of wisdom?

Thinking about doing full rgb led strip lighting for an apartment next year, what would the cost be? Single bedroom, maybe 600 square feet

Mostly because i wanted to save a little on energy, plus I want to make interesting lighting . From what i was researching, I estimated total costs to be around 300 dollars, but thats a rough estimate.

The costs would be highly dependent on the strips you use. You can get cheap ones for a couple bucks, but quality LED will be a lot more expensive.

WS2812b are addressable and at ~$40/5 meter strip they're pretty affordable. You'll need at least a 10 amp power supply per 5M strip, and if you want to control it you'll need an Arduino ($5 knockoff) and at least an IR remote.

It's possible make a home cloud personal? If yes, how? I don't want to waste much money, can I do it using a router with usb and a hdd? How?

My external HDD is connected to a raspberry pi and I run samba on raspi. I can acess files from any device. Plus raspi is a torrent box everything gets saved into the hdd and can watch stuff immediately. I have no idea if you can do it with a router. You can use your desktop/laptop as a samba share too though.
>>
I think it goes something like this:
Attach drive to computer
make it "shared"
enable sharing between devices on router
connect both devices to router
access files with a filemanager like airdroid or ES file explorer

Or if you have a dedicated old computer to act as a server you can set up an ad-hoc network. Connect via wifi directly to server. I think only one connection at a time this way though. I have a batch file for win 8 to do this if you need it. Think it's not been obfuscated on win7, so you can do it without a batch file.

Also IIRC(it's been a while) some network drivers or protocals might need to be installed or enabled

the easiest way, i suppose, is just to use a router with one or more shareable USB ports, and stick an external USB drive on it. (an independently-powered drive is more likely to work.) i have an old router that does that, but only for FAT formatted drives, which means max file size is 4gig. a used router like that costs less than $10.

if you've got the dough, Western Digital makes the consumer-grade WDMYcloud series of network drives. hook one up to your router and you have network access to its internal HDD thru the LAN, the Wifi, and remotely through the internet. has nice features like powering down when not in use, and creating restore points of the data, like you have in windows.

You may think this is a fun idea but it is very dangerous and we cannot condone it on 4chan.

Beer is not a novelty item and wearing it on a belt in anything other than a freezer will result in warming and spoiling the beer.

Use empty bottles if you must, 2 x elastic bands per bottle minimum.

Dont fall over or else you will be cut in half.

I really don't think you can do it on a DIY budget. Possibly at night, but not during the day.

It will be a halloween display so it will only be up at night. It would be fine to just project on my house. I do own a home theater projector but I'd rather not use that and I'm not sure it would be very bright.
