I used two steel hemispheres, a vinyl washer, and an aluminum button. A threaded rod with two nuts was epoxied between the two halves and clamped to join them.

Need some advice guys, my centeral heating pump is making a whiring sound and I have no hot water or heating. I took the vent cover off and the screw inside moves freely, so on advice of my dad I gave the unit a 'love tap' which produces a horrible grinding sound from it until I turn it off and back on again, can't get plumber out until tuesday, help?

if you don't have hot water at faucets, I'm going to assume there's no check valves on the line or the return. If you stand back and get a pic of more of that setup, might be able to tell you exactly what to do.
For the moment, try just closing one of those valves at the recirc pump, then check if you have hot water at a faucet, or no pressure, etc.

If there is a valve on the return line going into the bottom of the tank, close that one instead

You have 2 valves there so you can unscrew the (what look like) unions there (if they aren't unions, then they are valves with compression connections on the outer sides, so you'd need to turn off the water to the water heater and any other water valves on it, take loose the compression connections, remove the pump and valves, then remove valves from pump and put them back on the pipes, closed). you can unplug then remove the pump yourself. look up a repair manual or parts explosion for that model. You can then take it apart and try to fix it yourself by ordering the parts you need, or just buying/ordering a replacement yourself.
Those pumps are expensive, but most plumbers aren't going to try and take it apart, tell you to wait for parts then come back to put it together. They are going to just replace it, plus labor, plus service call.
So if you have basic tools and sense, repair or replace yourself

How easy is pulling up laminate flooring and reapplying new boards when skirting boards and kitchen cabinets have already been installed?

Can it be done without having to pull off skirting boards, redo the paint and pull out all the kitchen appliances?

Depends on how it was put in. Generally, you have to pull the trim at the very least.

Sometimes the cabinet is placed directly on the subfloor and they run the flooring up to the base of the cabinet. Then they use the trim to hide the gap. If you don't pull the trim you will have to run the flooring up to the trim and that never works out. You will have an exposed joint that will be a magnet for debris and look awful. Just wait till you spill something on it. It's nightmare to clean.

Sometimes the laminate was run under the cabinets, in which case you will have to cut it flush. This is a super pain in the ass because of the toe-kick and limited space. You will still have to pull the trim *before* you cut it flush or the trim won't provide the cover needed to hide the joint. Magnet, debris, etc, etc.

Source: lived in a rental where they did a shit job of it. It was super disgusting because the only way to clean it properly was to get down on your hands and knees and use a little brush to get in there. Oh, and those cheap-ass laminates that snap together? They *will* shift on you unless you pack them like sardines. Any gap around the edges and after a few years you will notice the gap 'moves' down the line and you have picture related.

I have a 1/2hp, 110v, Kenmore, Series 40 motor, water pump, and transmission. I also have the wiring harness, the cap, and wiring diagram. I know how to hook up a dryer motor easily, but this washer motor has 3 speeds and I'd like to take advantage of that for DIY purposes.

I basically want to attach a pulley to it for use with various hand cranked kitchen and farm tools (mills, grinders, etc.some with hefty flywheels like for an apple grinder) Basically, it will be in a project box with handles so it can be moved from station to station or building to building. This thing has some serious torque for the agitator shaft. I'll most likely replace the pump side with a fan to aid in cooling. Aside from a small amount of rust, this unit seems to be in good condition. Though, I'm concerned with the agitator shaft as it is a little wobbly, though I'm trying to find out of that is due to design or failure. That and the gear box leaks oil when tipped on its side which makes me thing there's no gasket in the design. I'd rather have horizontal shaft mount, but it is obviously designed for vertical mounting. I'll probably just pulley it up so it goes from V to H or remove the transmission/gear box completely and go full pulley.

The only advice I may need is for the control switch and breaker. I was thinking a 4-position rotary switch rated at 110v/240v 13a. The motor draws 9.8A, but I'm worried about inrush being a problem for say a 10A breaker. Perhaps a slow-blow breaker at 10A? Any other advice from those who have done this before would be appreciated.

Pic of everything.

I totally forgot to add that this will also be hooked up to a foot pedal to act as a deadman switch.
>>
>>1233939
You could plug and cord it with a 15A plug, but don't be surprised if the circuit breaker feeding the receptacle opens if someone else is using the circuit when you start the motor. Kinda like when you run a vacuum cleaner.
I would also get a manual motor starter for overload protection.

https://platt.com/platt-electric-supply/Manual-Starters-Switches-Overload-Protection/Eaton/MSH14-2A/product.aspx?zpid=69477
So do you want to have to constantly step on the pedal for it to run or to step on it once to stop the motor.

together those are about $200. That's not far from buying a new washing machine.

On the other hand, I wonder what you get when you buy the bottom-end washer.

I want to learn how to stick weld and cut metal with an oxyacetalyne torch. I' m gonna go ahead and save some cash myself and put this stuff in my dad's warehouse for me to learn on my own.I researched the general costs and I"m looking at about $600 for the high end weld machine and $500 for the bottles, torch and gas for the oxy cutter. Is that a reasonable estimate? Any beginner mistakes I may be missing? Can I cut corners using the harbor freight stuff?

This is about the price fro 2 college classes too but I haven't had good experiences at community colleges. Is that still something I should think about or can I learn most of it on my own?

get an AC/DC stick welder.

you can learn a lot by practicing, watching youtube videos, and reading online. there are some excellent welding forums, and you can get help here. On the other hand, at first it can save a lot of frustration to be with an experienced welder who can show you the basics and identify your mistakes.

welding is one of those things where you can get better each time you try, as long as you don't wait too long between sessions and forget what you learned. So accumulate some scrap metal and buy some sticks and practice, practice, practice.

A connex will run you about $2k delivered.
And I can pretty much guarantee you won't be able to make a water-proof, rodent-proof lockable enclosure the size of a connex for that money.

Don't be retarded with them - don't try to bury them. Otherwise they work just fine for storage.

They're *designed* to be stacked - their vertical supports are on the corners. Load the corners, they'll support a shitload of weight.

Its a quick and dirty way to make a home. Sure there are those that prefer not to use them. It all depends on your budget and locale for building codes. One of the main objections is the lack of walls to insulate, but there is straw bale and rigid foam applications. I don't know where you are, but apparently ignorance reins supreme as far as building inspectors and codes go, which is why they are prohibited in many jurisdictions. As someone who has delt with inspectors before (not involving shipping containers) typically if it is considered "non-standard" then the only way to get a building permit and then a certificate of occupancy is to have the design professionally drawn and stamped by architect or engineer.

However, if they are allowed, then they certainly are neat.

In many areas, one of the objections to shipping containers on property is that they are considered "ugly". So, it might be a good idea to consider coating the exterior in "papercrete" or stucco.

Hey, anons.

I was thinking of building my own (fullsize) arcade cabinet (none of that MAME bullshit, I think I'm doing a repro) using the plans from Donkey Kong, and I was wondering if any of you had a preference/some experience as to choosing between particleboard, mdf, and regular ply.

(mdo is not an option)

Particleboard is cheapest, but i've heard some concerns about strength.

What say you, /diy/?

>>
>>1233559

I was looking at doing the same and from what I have gathered:

>do it with a mame emulator because you'll never get the original arcade feel without a CRT, which are rare now a days
>don't bother building your own cabinet as it would cost more than getting any decent gutted cabinet

But if you want to do it your way you can use regular ply wood from what I remember, you don't have to use furniture grade.

Pic related was my first forge-type thingy. I took a 2 gallon paintcan type thing (found it outside a lab at university), cut a section out of the side, cut a hole in the top, drilled some holes in the side of a pipe, slide that in through the hole, then packed perlite around it, then covered that in perlite/refractory cement, then covered that in refractory cement. Dried it, fired it, then I mostly used it for very inprecise heat treaments.

I just broke the lid of my teapot and realized that there is a fuckton of space in there.
Thinking about putting a something inside. What can I make it do?
First idea was just a button which lights up an LED when it is open, but that would be too easy.
Any fancy ideas I could do with a µC?
Measuring the inside temperature would be nice, but I'd need a real small display which would fit into the top.
