I have a leak down the line from my hot water heater under a big slab. I shut the cold intake no more leak.I don't have the money to fix this right now. Will this hurt the heating coil?

>>
As long as there is water in the tank no.
>>
>>1152940

Is it gas or electric?

You need to turn off the breaker if it's electric or turn off the gas if it's obviously a gas heater.

It will burn the heater elements out if you leave the power on and the water turned off.
>>
it's an A O Smith electric 75 gallon. the weird thing is that hot is bleeding up the cold water line so the sink is getting warm water when it should be cold, and hot when hot. what the fuck? I am sure there is some broken copper because when I shut the cold intake to the heater the leak stops, the tank is full and heats up ~ I hear this a couple times a day.

My car is an oldie and the (I think) vinyl is torn here. I know there are a variety of services for this, but I want to do it myself and I'm hoping there are some DIY products or kits out there I can use. What should I get?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Go to a fabric/upholstery shop, bring a piece of the vinyl for color matching, buy a sheet of vinyl, copy the shape of the old piece and sew it together.
>>
>>1152790
this material is pretty old and slightly hardened. I'm not sure if it'd sew on that well, and the sewing holes seem like they would get worn quickly. This is just what I imagine.

Plus I don't think it'd look very good to have some patched on spot on my seat. Not really the aesthetic I'm going for with this car.
>>
>>1152802
I think he meant to replace the whole piece.

Hello /diy/, first time on here so I hope this is an appropriate post.
Moved into a dorm room recently, and these 2 heating pipes are exposed. this was actually quite comfy in the winter, but not it has heated up and my room gets way too hot way too quickly.

So I want to insulate these, how would I best go about it? Can I just wrap them in styrofoam like a tennis raquet handle? Would I need special materials?

This is a dorm room, so that means its a rental...and you never change/adjust/redo/add value to something you don't own...

However, you can get foam pipe insulation for this quite cheap...pic related is about $3.00 Can...

so, long story short, i'm going to try and build a domotic system based on a raspberry pi, and i tought it would be cool to connect it to my android phone via bluetooth so that i could answer the phone from anywhere in the house. Do you know if it's ever been tried before? I mean, i have a vague idea of how to set it up, but i'm not sure it's possible.

I want to build an aquarium that will fit on my windowsill, but something sizeable enough to be useful. The maximum depth of the tank (front to back) would be 3¾ inches, and the length can be up to 16 inches.

How tall would be too tall if I gave it the max footprint of 3¾" x 16"? If I make it 10 inches tall it'll hold about 2.5 gallons, which is a good size for small inverts, but that seems a bit unstable on a tank less than 4 inches deep.

wtf are you doing with that tank in direct sunlight?
that's not where you place a tank.
shrimp generally don't like high temperatures, so put them the fuck away from there and get some proper lighting and god dammit a filter and some flow.
those shrimp will be dead in a few days if you don't
>>
If you want to be semi successful get cray fish and some cover for them.

Im wanting to build a dehydrator. My plan was to build a mountable box that fits on the back of my PC. It uses the exhaust fan for airflow and heat.

How effective would this be? Do I need extra heat? My PC runs a R9 290 (Gets to 90 degrees on the core) so sometimes the exhaust can be fairly warm.

>>
>>1152098
Your PC will be blowing dust over your drying vegetables/magic mushrooms
>>
Depending on the airflow through the unit, you'll be reducing your airflow through your pc, so just do some initial stress tests and check temps. also I didn't think dehydrators were heated, it may work faster at the expense of quality.
At that rate you're better off just mounting a pc fan to a box that way it's mobile and easier to use. Simple battery pack/switch for power
>>
>>1152100
Could a filter solve this? I dont see how a little dust could ruin the product

#mykindathread.

I drove a limo out of the junkyard and resurected that bitch recently. Pic related was a 4 wheeler almost burried in a dump. 99% sure it has a valve stuck. Almost got the head off. Probably getting a $550 big bore kit for it because i hear good things.

If nothing else it was worth torching for a go cart rear end.

Is lifepo4 for a solar battery worth the hassle? Seems like everything from the cells (some of them have microprocessor HUH) and the controllers is more involved than lead acid. I'd like such a setup but I'm overwhelmed by the intricacies, and don't want to kill my battery in a week.

Lead is good for the simplicity factor I don't see tesla going lead any time soon. Even lead takes some looking after.
>>
>>1152007
Expensive as fuck to save some weight. Ideally with care they beat the cost of lead. But being 2 or 3 times the cost and from /biz. For me they would never be worth it. >muh eth buh eth how much eth do u have i want to into eth should i buy eth etc...
>>

Lifepo batteries are a game changer in the yachting industry. Supposedly much safer than LiIo, lighter, less component toxicity, better charge cycling, and able to draw more power from them. Co$t is a bit daunting, as all emerging technology usually is. I'd be interested in getting some at some point in time.

Was reading Pacific Yachting magazine and saw this article in it. Gives some good info and figures:

http://www.pysystems.ca/tech-talk/techtalk/2017/01/31/why-are-lithium-iron-phosphate-batteries-so-great/

I plan on giving myself a plant gf. It would be a structure that somehow resembled a woman and plants would grow from in and around it.

Plants:
>English Ivy
>Fern for hair
>Succulents as accents

Material:
>Rough structure of wood for the ivy to grown on
>Steel Wire for small detail

Do you have any ideas of a more maleable material?
Will the Ivy or other plants struggle when growing over the wire?
From 0-10, how creepy is it?

Any other suggestions, comments or concerns let me know.

You should consider using hydroponics style coconut fiber mats

>Will the Ivy or other plants struggle when growing over the wire?
Doesn't seem like a problem

>From 0-10, how creepy is it?
Probably an 8
Slightly more creepy than plushies, but not quite at the end of the scale. Try to pass it off as art and it's a 5.

excellent idea, I will use it as to fill up empty places and help the plants attach to it.
