Has anyone made their own pc shell? Im in the process of building a pc and ive been looking into the cases but i honestly dont like many of them and i dont want to spend 1,000+ on a better one when i know its mostly a rip off. So i was looking into making my own. One maybe in pic related (not mine) but i like the clear look. If anyone has made their own, what were issues i should look for? Cost maybe? Also what are key components i should keep in mind.
Any advice helps.

A few months ago I saw a "tutorial", "motivation", "instructional poster" or whatever you may call it on how to train to make a Bruce Lee one inch punch. I can't seem to find the photo now. It taught you how to do push ups correctly and then start to box at a sack correctly. Someone sitting on this image?

I have some new potted plants and have been seeing quite a few gnats flying around. I finally took a bright flashlight and founds some gnat eggs. I collected and destroyed about 12-15 eggs.

What do I do to stop them? I'm a plant noob and was probably over watering, but I've read to let the top of the soil dry up to kill the gnats, so I'll do that. Anything else? I mixed white vinegar and some dish soap in some bowls and set them out for a few days, 0 gnats caught in any of the traps. Did I not do it right?

Some potting mixes have fertilizer spheres which dissolve after being wet for so long, are you sure it's not that?
>>
>>1149583
I guess it's possible, I just bought regular potting soil, but I've had a number of flying gnats around the house and the eggs literally look like my OP pic. Also, I dug around a bit and could only find the eggs near the top of soil so I'm pretty sure it's not fertilizer.

I've got this old welding machine that started tripping the breakers if I try to switch it on, after it overheated one time. It supposedly has a thermal shutdown switch, but that one might have failed due to the whole thing being a cheap POS, it's basically just a large transformer in a box, no capacitors or circuit boards of any type. Also it's rated for 5% duty cycle at 135 amps. Breakers are B type so fairly fast for this type of welding machine. Thing is it basically never tripped the breakers before that one overheat shutdown. It still turns on fine if I don't connect mass to anything. So- what's the likely cause of this; or rather, is there any chance it might be something else than a short circuit in one of the windings from thermal damage?

My cheap stick welder is also mostly a transformer in a box. Mine calls for a 110v 20 amp service. Have you checked what the amperage is the breaker rated for? I believe 20 amp is the minimum for any welder.
>>
They're for 16 amps. B type so rated to trip at 3-5x rated current. Used to work fine. 230 V mains so I guess they're equivalent to 32 amps in a 110 V system?
>>
>>1155711
>Used to work fine.
If you had no problem welding in the past, then maybe the breaker is worn out. Breakers do wear out in time.

friend has a really rare synth (synergy) and we wanna repair it. it's almost entirely digital (EPROMS, CPUs, etc). the data sheets for these chips don't have a test circuit that i could use to test a chip if it's screwed or not.

could i apply a +/- voltage to the power pins, touch a wire to one of the pins and measure resistance? i think that'd tell me if it runs current or not.

Hey /diy/!

I am a freediver and want to be propelled underwater (without the regular swimming), but electric motor underwater scooters are very expensive ($400+).

Is there any way that I can make a hand-powered machine that would be faster than swimming? Preferably one that you can pick up and go (aka not harnessed to you).

Basically is it physically possible for a contraption to convert linear (or some sort of push/pull) into rotational (propeller) and cause a greater speed than regular swimming?

If you guys design something quickly in MSpaint, i can 3D model it for you and do motion analysis too.

Pic related, what would the red thing be.

Your gona need to power it with your legs instead of your arms. Waaaay bigger muscles in the legs. I gotta say that I think freediving fins really nailed it on this one just get a pair.
>>
>>1155527
This^

The fully evolved body-powered mechanism is fins, maybe some kind of hand-fin could augment that.

There is no shortcut to get more out than you are putting in or to radically change the way the force is being applied. Experiment with making your own underwater electric scooter/powered person-dragging turbine perhaps?

I have a replacement pump, not a replacement assembly. I cant find anything on the internet documenting how to properly take this apart, and I can't for the life of me figure how it's supposed to come apart.

There aren't any bolts or screws or tabs holding things together. I'm about to just starting forcing it apart because i need this replaced.

I posted here in hopes that someone has experience with this and could help me off the top of their head.

>inb4 google it
Google yields nothing specifically to replacing the pump itself. It just refers me to pump disassembly.

The only thing that's keeping me from removing the pump is this ring holding on this orange sock/filter thing. Pic related.

Also, for those who don't know, the shiny gold cylinder in the OP pic is the pump that i need to replace.
>>
>>1155177
You have to remove that metal ring clip, and everything will slide off. More than likely, you'll break it, as they aren't meant to be removed. Usually a fuel pump replacement kit will come with one of those as well. At least, that was the situation with a Toyota Camry that I changed the pump on. The thing looks identical.

Let's see if we can solve this puzzle, /diy/.

An old building on my campus is about to be condemned. Its roof is ornamented with beautiful statues and finials. I want to steal one of the finials to use as a desk ornament. It's going to be demolished anyway, so I figure it's no big deal if I take it. Never mind how I'll get on the roof or how I'll get the stone down. I've figured these things out already.

The problem is that the building is in a part of campus that's regularly patrolled by campus police. I can't make a lot of noise when I'm detaching the finial or they'll notice me. How can I break it off without making too much noise?

Here's a drawing of the finial and the tip of the roof it's attached to. The finial is about the width of a basketball at its widest point. Should I cut it where it's thinnest? Or I should I try to crack the mortar, the weakest material? Should I use a file or saw? Hammer and chisel?

I figure that there are two approaches to this: either use a file or saw to cut it relatively quietly or use a heavy pointed object to detach it in two to four blows. This second option would create a loud noise, but it would be over quickly, so hopefully campus police wouldn't be able to pinpoint the location it comes from.

What do you mean? I showed exactly how it's attached. It's stuck to two bricks with mortar. It's about the size of a basketball. I'm guessing that the bricks are about a foot tall. There's nothing behind or in front of it that's attached to it. Just those two bricks and the concrete underneath it.

A strikingly minimal and rustic bbq holder, created using bent copper pipes for maximal thermal conductivity and structural flexibility; the simple but elegant clamp solution of a bent bar on a threaded rod displays the remarkable understanding of the forces within the structure and the interplay of elements. The sculptural holder is affixed onto a concave circular plate on which firewood can be lit. The result is a simple but effective showcase of post-modern survivalism, as OP arrives at a form without questioning the formality and age-old conception of the fireplace, but instead invented his own language to reconfigure the barbecue into an almost invisible entity, almost to the point of negating all existing understanding of the universe. The piece is now left in the rain in op's garden in his attempt to further improve it's rust, a symbol of the dissolving world of the century. It is no doubt that this piece will be remembered as a landmark in art history and an icon of the current decade.

Rotary tool general.

So my motivation for /diy/ crafting shit has jumped up recently after moving to a new place and helping a friend built some book cases from scratch. I have collected a fair amount of Dremel accessories that I was fortunate enough to get for cheap, so I am much more inclined to make stuff using them. My first thought is rigging up a light-scale lathe using the Dremel workstation (which is effectively a drill press)

Basically the idea is to create a mount on the opposite end with a bearing that would allow the wood piece to spin securely. Seen some similar homemade lathes before with a small piece of threaded rod grinded down to have a pointed / forked end to hold the piece which sounds simple enough. I plan on mounting the workstation to a small sheet of plywood raised with 2 x 2 to allow clamps to hold the other end in place.

Would this plan actually work out in practice? Not sure if I relayed my idea well enough.

I think you're going to run into some problems because you are asking the dremel to do almost the polar opposite of what it was designed to do. Rotary tools run small attachments at very high rpm with low torque. With a lathe you want large attachments, relatively low rpm, high torque. You're first failure point it going to be the collet, you may be able to solve that by putting a chuck on it but even then I think the attachment will slip. The bearing for the rotational shaft on most rotary tools is the plastic body of the tool so applying significant lateral force will wear out the body of the tool and cause irreparable damage.
Rotary tools are very light duty miniature die grinders. You would really be pushing your luck with this plan. It may work but if I were going to go through the trouble of trying to rig up a make shift lathe I would start with a different power source and chuck for sure.
>>
Thanks for the feedback. That was my main concern so I was honestly hoping someone could point out how bad an idea that could be.

I've been into woodworking for a while, done some white bitch projects for my wife and other things. However, now I'm wanting to find a hobby, that way I can stop working so much when I'm at home and relax.

I found this picture (thread photo) of a scale model of a house, just like you would in real life.

What do I all need, and how much would it cost to start doing this? Think cheaper tools, I don't plan on using them for much else than this stuff, and if I decide to take something bigger on in a few years, I'll invest in something worth it.

Anyone have any other hobby ideas like this?

There's place that sell scale model house framing kits, just plug that into google.

Whats up /diy/ post your recent tool purchases.

For about a year I have been looking for some nice old Yankee Screwdrivers.
been going to the flea market and digging through bins of old tools to no prevail.

Today I finally went to my local swapmeet and found an old man drinking beers and selling tools out of the back of his truck.
he sold me three yankee screwdrivers, a few hammers and various other tools I needed for around $0.50 a piece. I got everything I have been looking for at fleamarkets and thrift shops for months for a total of $10.

GO TO YOUR LOCAL SWAP MEET!

I want to cast my Aria STG-STV guitar's body into a mold and pour aluminum into it, so that I have an aluminum body that I can reattach all of the parts to (internal electronics, pick guard, bridge, neck, etc.). The problem is, I have no idea what the shit I'm doing and I don't know how much of the required materials my maker space has, if the guitar would even be playable, or if the aluminum just wouldn't work for whatever reason.

As I said, this is just an inkling of an idea, so I'll need all of the info I can get. Materials, costs, machinery, techniques. Pic related, it's my guitar.
